i've never seen the film of South Pacific, which looks like a mounted-and-stuffed dutiful adap and makes no lists of movie greats

Lots to love for me - superb musical numbers, the sound is superb, Mitzi Gaynor is fab. Okay the pacing is off and some numbers drag but it's an enjoyable affair.

Ofc the colour filters are downright awful in some scenes, and the studio/director definitely regretted them, but otherwise Shamroy's cinematography is lovely (see it in Blu-Ray!).

I'm Finn thanks, don't mention it (fionnland), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 16:20 (six years ago) link

South Pacific 1958 gets the romantic longing right and it's a beautifully shot film. low point is Brazzi, what a bore.

Eh, a bit of a dogs dinner for the most part. If it were an option i'd pick the Bye Bye Love/Life finale from All That Jazz. As it isn't, i will settle for Cabaret.

I see a Hairspray number from the remake; they should have had "Madison Time" from the original instead.
