I'm not sure I get what you guys talk about : the 3rd chord of the 4 chords sequence is the one you enjoy particularly ?

It might not be that specific change, there is one particularly gorgeous moment in there though.

“Luke Dick”?

ah I suppose it's the middle 8 followed by the instrumental/orchestrated part with vocal harmonies (which is the same chord sequence as the rest of the song but with variations on the bass).
If that's what you have in mind, I agree !

Oh what a world. Damn

Songs like high horse, Wonder Woman and velvet Elvis take this to the top for me

I love this record

synonym toast crunch (Ross), Sunday, 3 June 2018 13:53 (five years ago) link

chatter died down quickly, but i still play it every day or two

alpine static, Monday, 4 June 2018 07:07 (five years ago) link

Perfect crossover between my daughters and I, so it's had a lot of play here, and holds up very well.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Monday, 4 June 2018 07:28 (five years ago) link

i played it again last night! "slow burn" is probably my favorite song she's ever done now.

dyl, Monday, 4 June 2018 16:35 (five years ago) link

first 5 songs are perfect

alpine static, Monday, 4 June 2018 17:42 (five years ago) link

I've been trying to figure out which specific folk album this reminds me of for like a week now and have yet to really do it; Suzanne Vega is the closest I've come but musically that's not right, it's only her voice

Does anyone get Josh Rouse vibes from Golden Hour - like the smooth, MOR sound from 1972 and Nashville?

aphoristical, Monday, 4 June 2018 22:00 (five years ago) link

i can hear that, now that you mention it

i think Nashville is a super duper underrated record

alpine static, Monday, 4 June 2018 22:47 (five years ago) link

Golden Hour is also perfect. Whole album is a real gem.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 4 June 2018 23:29 (five years ago) link

my one qualm with "golden hour" is that "you're my golden hour" comes 3 songs after "you're my velvet elvis" but it's really a very beautiful song

Finally got this from the library and, uh, this is the best album I've ever heard. A whole album that bottles up the wistful freshness I've only ever gotten from "Fastlove" and "Sweet Lovin' Man."

geoffreyess, Monday, 2 July 2018 04:30 (five years ago) link

I'm feeling all the songs about living far from the people you love most. "And if my sister lived in town, I know that we'd be doin' something fun" -- feeling fine, and suddenly a moment that hits as hard as Lucinda Williams' "Crescent City."

geoffreyess, Monday, 2 July 2018 04:36 (five years ago) link

Yeah definitely my discover of the year since I didn't know her previously.
I may like the previous album a bit more but the latest record is clearly fantastic with some of the best songwriting and melodies I have heard in a loooong while !

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 2 July 2018 07:48 (five years ago) link

one month passes...

the production on this is incredible, one of the best-sounding albums i've heard in awhile. i've been listening to this more than anything else lately, along w/Ashley Monroe's Sparrow. my favorite remains Love Is A Wild Thing, but the title track is up there maybe bc it was also one of the songs she performed when I saw her live opening for Willie Nelson last year and it caught my attention more than anything else in her already-impressive set. It sounds like waking up with the sun.

omar little, Friday, 17 August 2018 16:05 (five years ago) link

otm, Love is a wild thing def a standout

niels, Friday, 17 August 2018 16:18 (five years ago) link

the production is really insane ... the press copy of the album is wav files, i cherish them with all my heart

J0rdan S., Friday, 17 August 2018 16:21 (five years ago) link

the pre-chorus drum fills on "lonely weekend" i think are my fav moment on any album this year

J0rdan S., Friday, 17 August 2018 16:24 (five years ago) link

i've heard that the v1nyl version is crazy good (which was the case at least for STDP, i can confirm that) and i might have to pick it up.

i'm interested in anything that sounds like this, if anyone has recommendations. no Paula Cole jokes please.

omar little, Friday, 17 August 2018 16:25 (five years ago) link

Love is a Wild Thing def. needs to be a single.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 17 August 2018 16:26 (five years ago) link

Just an amazing album.

not many things sound like Kacey Musgraves but the mellow stray gators stuff on Harvest perhaps, also a bit of a harvest moon vibe... did you check the case/lang/veirs album?

niels, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:14 (five years ago) link

this is one of the best sounding albums ive ever heard

ufo, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:43 (five years ago) link

i am in love with this record - cool timing on the revive, just started working on a comic in the sun and this album sounds perfect.

first track reminds me of neil young

Ross, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:49 (five years ago) link

This album is the musical equivalent of an instagram post of someone doing yoga in a field of sunflowers.

such an underrated album

Golden Hour is an object lesson in the use of reverb, the trails are almost lysergic. The whole thing is a dream.

^ so far, yeah

Mother may be my fave ... but I love them all to some degree.

Oh What a World, too. "These are real things ..."

alpine static, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:59 (five years ago) link

she was tripping on LSD during mother, weird eh

Ross, Friday, 17 August 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

Are you guys saying this is a... drug album?

just sayin, Sunday, 19 August 2018 08:22 (five years ago) link

much as I liked High Horse as a single (apart from the lyrics, still feel like a missed opportunity to me) I find it a bit unnecessary in the context of the album

niels, Sunday, 19 August 2018 09:05 (five years ago) link

Morris - not a drug album, I was referring to her comment in rolling stone that she was on acid during the recording of mother

Ross, Sunday, 19 August 2018 16:38 (five years ago) link

MatthewK said “lysergic,” too... sounded like you guys were busting out the blacklight, lol

stan in the place where you work (morrisp), Sunday, 19 August 2018 17:07 (five years ago) link

more slightly buzzed than lysergic imo

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 19 August 2018 17:50 (five years ago) link

Well you can search and find the Rolling Stone interview and others where she describes acid as a great drug for artists because it’s humbling, and how she was tripping on LSD and feeling far from her mother who coincidentally texted her right then, leading to her writing the song. So “lysergic” not exactly misleading. She also says that she loved the last Tame Impala and wanted to bring some of that sound to country.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Sunday, 19 August 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

for me it's more pleasant, like being a little baked on a summer day where you have nothing to do, I don't necessarily need it to be like Piper at the Gates of the Honky Tonk

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 19 August 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

i can't figure out if i would like one more verse in Mother or not. on one hand, it's perfect as is. on the other, it doesn't seem like it'd be that hard to write a good second verse, and she could still keep the whole thing under 2:30. pretty tempting!

alpine static, Sunday, 19 August 2018 21:48 (five years ago) link

xp LOL

new borad describe?

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Sunday, 19 August 2018 22:07 (five years ago) link

in my conversation w her and her producers i got the sense it's definitely a drug album

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 August 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link

i didn't have a place for this in my story but when they were finishing the album in LA they took shrooms and drove around listening to it
