Really sad that people keep forcing you to listen to this unfunny podcast

It is hilarious every time this happens though

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 15:08 (six years ago) link

Syria bit didn't seem unserious to me (moreso than you'd expect from a humorous political podcast) - "Macron is my boyfriend" was a two second throwaway line that never got revisited.
The point of CTH is that it's not just droll political talk. There are outlets for that if you want it - I appreciate Citations Needed and some other but as a whole I'd rather read non-humorous political discussion than hear it.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 16 April 2018 19:39 (six years ago) link

yeah, I think I probably didn't explain myself very well. I like political humor quite a bit. But the Chapo folk are repellent and repetitive.

Mic Dicta can’t release episodes fast enough these days

Why are you listening then

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link

probably boredom/excessive free time

Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Monday, 16 April 2018 21:42 (six years ago) link

Lmao any criticism of the show and it's like WHY ARE YOU LISTENING TO IT? NO ONE'S PUTTING A GUN TO YOUR HEAD

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 16 April 2018 22:51 (six years ago) link

the makeup of their audience and how people listen to the show and what it actually is/whatever it started as is hilarious and really interesting imo

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 22:55 (six years ago) link

@ ups -

I don't even know why (because it was business as usual) but I found their segment on Syria pretty repellent. I think I'm out on these jr. high dipshits.

― President Keyes, Monday, April 16, 2018 10:20 AM (eight hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

this is a typically lazy & supercilious response to the show. if it was business as usual why did you keep listening

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 22:56 (six years ago) link

The litmus test on listening IMO is how down you are with their attitude toward US foreign policy (non-interventionist), you have to be down with the idea that we're largely a force of evil in the world or else laughing at liberal/centrists on FP is going to be unlistenable.

If 'all postwar Presidents are war criminals' gets your dander up, not the show for you.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 16 April 2018 23:39 (six years ago) link

liking the...fifteen minutes of mic dicta I've listened thus far

gbx, Monday, 16 April 2018 23:50 (six years ago) link

After getting a barrage for several hours for commentary:

Mr. Star, do you admit participating in a legal podcast that you enjoy doing?
- Yes, your honor.
Then I have no choice but to sentence you to do that podcast all the time for the rest of your life. You may only discuss Michael Cohen.
- This is fair. I expected nothing less.

mic dicta is really good so far. i'm getting kind of sick of chapo. that's my update.

it's not really 'political' but i've been really impressed with 'the relentless picnic' so far too

thought the recent one was pretty decent. i totally understand how hearing an flat anti-war stance would drive people insane cos i used to flaunt that stance on ilx and got tons of shit for it. anti-war is just not popular stance (so props to people like this for trying to fix that).

If it's more along the lines of the "electoral strategy, not electoralism" ethos laid out by one of the national slate platforms a while back then I'm all for it

this was good, and it's ridiculous how Chris Hayes is the network's only saving grace

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 April 2018 12:45 (six years ago) link

yeah even as someone who watches basically no american news television it was an engaging listen. I did think it was funny how they opened with something like "it's not enough to say it's limited and bad because it's corporate media" but....ultimately that's more or less what it boils down to even if the specifics are a little knottier

Simon H., Thursday, 19 April 2018 12:50 (six years ago) link

I haven't listened to the pod but it is disheartening how thoroughly MSNBC has taken to heart this "Fox News of the left" mentality to the point that they've just waded neck-deep in conspiracy-mongering, which is what seems to fuel a huge amount of Fox's programming. and maybe some of these conspiracies are true, I'm not suggesting they're off in the equivalent of Uranium One-Land or anything. Obviously this is driven at least by the perception of what's going to get ratings, and I know the average cable news viewer across the political spectrum is pretty fucking old. Is it just that old people are particularly susceptible to conspiracies? Or, I guess, more pointedly, is this just the pathology of Boomers?

evol j, Thursday, 19 April 2018 13:18 (six years ago) link

Actutally, most of the reporting is solid – MSNBC's producers are at pains to invite the NYT, Huff Post, WaPost, et. al. reporters to discuss their stories. The problem is the depths to which the Russia coverage consumes them. It makes you realize they have no news division: it's green rooms where Adam Schiff, Bill Kristol, and Josh Earnest hang out showing each pics of their kids.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 April 2018 13:26 (six years ago) link

I’ve heard the line that “Russia is the liberal Pizzagate” which seems to fit a lot of the hysteria

It was Comey who, in striving to look balanced and nonpartisan, threw a heavy, wet diaper into the middle of the 2016 election. And it is good, polite men like Comey—men who believe even the most ghoulish of our public servants deserve to be cosseted in the warm embrace of Washington chumminess—who have helped foster the kind of hapless, resistance-free environment that has allowed mass corruption to flourish. Telling Comey to eat a pile of shit is the subject of this week’s DEADCAST.

As if they knew their Syria segment was weak tea, The War Nerd joins them on the new premium ep

Simon H., Thursday, 19 April 2018 17:29 (six years ago) link

xp One thing I will say about Trump is that he's pretty good at identifying and nailing people's weaknesses, and I absolutely do get the sense that there is something self-serving about Comey, like the whole way he handled the Clinton stuff seemed much more concerned with appearances than with propriety.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 19 April 2018 17:31 (six years ago) link

Comey is a whore. Look no further than media blitz. 60 Minutes or Dateline or whatever is one thing, speaking at Barnes & Nobles' and going on talk shows and doing a full press tour is so gross.

flappy bird, Thursday, 19 April 2018 17:34 (six years ago) link

speaking at Barnes & Nobles

i mean i'm not defending comey here but he put out a book iirc?

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 19 April 2018 17:49 (six years ago) link

he's a highly entertaining writer but no, he's not good at podcasting. which is actually somewhat endearing because I have a feeling I would be really bad at it in exactly the same kind of halting, dorky way he is.

the Deadcast is still actually pretty solid though because David Roth is very good at podcasting. replacing Tim Marchman (who was miles worse than Magary) with Roth was a gamechanger.
