There's always Del Taco.

More seriously -- this spot's recently opened, a half block from the Great American Music Hall, and was damn delicious. Was just there last night.

TL tends to excel at the one dollar sign cuisine, like Shalimar, Turtle Tower or Saigon Sandwiches. But I bet Ned's pick is good.

fajita seas, Monday, 16 April 2018 01:49 (six years ago) link

I am also more than down for one $ sign. 2-3 was more of a ceiling. Thank you!!

So I'm doing a thing next weekend to raise money for the Great Slate, which also features excellent house music (hooray for Dav1d S1ska.)

Tickets are here or Facebook if you want me to spam you with DJ mixes and candidate interviews in the runup.

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Saturday, 5 May 2018 04:38 (five years ago) link

Eventbrite

DJI, Saturday, 5 May 2018 06:05 (five years ago) link

That's awesome. We've been donating to the Great Slate as well.

fajita seas, Saturday, 5 May 2018 14:48 (five years ago) link

thanks, real Eventbrite

:( RIP Rene Yanez https://missionlocal.org/2018/05/rene-yanez-mission-icon-dies-at-75/

dude figured v large in this book I finished a couple months ago (http://www.upenn.edu/pennpress/book/15634.html)

RIP, Rene. I never knew about his diagnosis. Saw him a few times at art events the last month or so and he was still engaging with the community and encouraging young artists. What a legacy. Gomez Pena wrote a beautiful letter to him that was getting shared around Facebook.

Home was broken into today.

Martin Landau Ballet (Leee), Friday, 22 June 2018 04:07 (five years ago) link

I was thinking about getting a PS4 this week so at least I dodged a bullet there.

Martin Landau Ballet (Leee), Friday, 22 June 2018 04:17 (five years ago) link

That book looks amazing.

xpost Yikes. Lose anything?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 June 2018 04:35 (five years ago) link

Yes, they went straight for my Mac.

Martin Landau Ballet (Leee), Friday, 22 June 2018 04:36 (five years ago) link

Scrambling now because I tried to do that Locate My Mac thing, forgot my iCloud credentials, then requested a reset, and saw that it sent the request straight to my stolen Mac.

Martin Landau Ballet (Leee), Friday, 22 June 2018 04:38 (five years ago) link

Oh god that sucks

El Tomboto, Friday, 22 June 2018 05:38 (five years ago) link

They took my sheets and bath towels too! So I've got the expected sense of violation, plus I have to deal with my germophobia and just the leeriness of even touching my stuff, which I now know they toggled through.

Martin Landau Ballet (Leee), Friday, 22 June 2018 07:48 (five years ago) link

Rifled through, not toggled

OK, our visit is in a few weeks. Doing some A+ tourist stuff, like Alcatraz night tour and a long bike tour, plus dinner at Nopa. Looking for a good Sunday night dinner suggestion, though. Any good ideas? I figure staples like burritos and the like we can fit in anywhere, and staples at the other end (like State Bird Provisions) I worry might be booked up already.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 July 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

I enjoyed Hogwash quite a bit last time I was in town.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 7 July 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

Looks awesome but very ... Chicago.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 July 2018 16:19 (five years ago) link

Blue Plate is perfect delicious comfort food, and you can get a reservation there.

Shanghai Dumpling King (either location) is great, and low-cost. Good alternative to some of the higher-end dim sum places.

Dosa is good for fancy Indian food/cocktails, but pretty pricey.

Not really doing high-end food anymore, but Coi is pretty nuts if you're into molecular gastronomy.

DJI, Saturday, 7 July 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

China Live is fantastic and huge so getting a seat isn't a real worry.

Fetchboy, Saturday, 7 July 2018 18:00 (five years ago) link

If you go to Shanghai Dumpling King on Montery Blvd, you will be two blocks from my house. I recommend two cups chicken clay pot.

fajita seas, Saturday, 7 July 2018 18:02 (five years ago) link

my wife doesn't like Chinese. :(

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 July 2018 18:48 (five years ago) link

I live near you, FS! Over the freeway in mission terrace.

DJI, Saturday, 7 July 2018 19:23 (five years ago) link

Front Porch, Zuni Cafe, Foreign Cinema, Swan Oyster Depot ...

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Saturday, 7 July 2018 20:45 (five years ago) link

Blue Plate is perfect delicious comfort food, and you can get a reservation there.

Echoing this, quite good. Enjoy Boulevard on the Embarcadero very much. Will also cosign Front Porch and China Live.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 July 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link

Awesome, you all are the best, thanks for the suggestions. SF comes at the end of a west coast trip for us, where there will be lots of food like Blue Plate, so we went for Front Porch, which also looks like it has a great bar. Love southern food.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 July 2018 21:49 (five years ago) link

Yeah, good stuff. Would however recommend the Royal Cuckoo for a drink too. And will add that I live near both the Front Porch and the Cuckoo, so basically drop a line with your schedule etc.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 July 2018 23:59 (five years ago) link

Not a local but brunch at Son's Addition a few months back was one of the best I've had anywhere.

If you can get a reservation at Foreign Cinema for brunch, it is killer.

DJI, Sunday, 8 July 2018 16:47 (five years ago) link

oh man, would eat all the ersters

lâche pas la patate (outdoor_miner), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

west coast oysters can be delicious but I dunno why y’all bring them out with nothing more than a little thing of cocktail sauce, a little thing of vinegar, and half a lemon. Oysters can tolerate a lot more than that, also, why does San Francisco hate hot sauce generally?

El Tomboto, Sunday, 8 July 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

U mean aside from all the asians and latinos and african americans?

Οὖτις, Sunday, 8 July 2018 22:03 (five years ago) link

I am not aware of SF hot sauce hatred at all.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Monday, 9 July 2018 00:04 (five years ago) link

I think my bias is probably because I live in a place where it regularly gets a seat at the table with other condiments and doesn’t have to be asked for? But Shakey did kinda own me just now

El Tomboto, Monday, 9 July 2018 00:31 (five years ago) link

El Tomboto, oysters should be eaten alive in their own brine; they require no, nor are enhanced, flavorwise, by anything but wine, Chablis by my preference
