Feel like this album deserves its own thread. So far the 3 singles point to a more shoegaze direction which is basically what I wished for when I heard “sparks” on DC. More live drums, distorted synth waves interlaced with guitar - anticipating this hard

shoegave, now this has my attention!

Dark spring doesn’t do much for me - probably one of their most by the numbers singles

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Friday, 27 April 2018 14:04 (five years ago) link

unsurprisingly, it's exquisite!

the production is very 'dry' in an otherworldly and haunting way. sometimes grim, sometimes beautiful.

it's like they took the vibe of 'Thank Your Lucky Stars,' but moved it into outer space and replaced the chamber-y organs with sinister synths.

KevRus, Friday, 27 April 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

Black Car is their best song since Irene imo. Saimiliar atmosphere too.

nostormo, Saturday, 28 April 2018 17:09 (five years ago) link

Last Ride. Amazing.
Prediction: this record will be considered a Dream Pop/Shoegaze classic on the future

nostormo, Sunday, 29 April 2018 20:19 (five years ago) link

Yeah more Sparks is exactly what I wanted too.

Lemon Glow is already one of my favorite Beach House tracks.

Last single sounded a lot like broadcast

Dyslexicon (Ross), Monday, 7 May 2018 15:33 (five years ago) link

I've been playing this for the past week or so now and I think it's already up there as one of my favourites of theirs. The transition from 'Dark Spring' into 'Pay No Mind' is so great. Aside from those two, 'Drunk In LA' and 'Lose Your Smile' are really hitting me hard so far.

whitehallunity, Monday, 7 May 2018 16:40 (five years ago) link

"girl of the year" rules, cure disintegration style

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 7 May 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

Great record imo. Up there with Teen Dream as their best. It's their MPV in a way.

nostormo, Monday, 7 May 2018 17:45 (five years ago) link

Based on the singles this sounds like a bummer record.

Black car has those “ha ha ha ha” vocals also found in O superman, mac’s book of love, goldfrapps hunt etc

this comes out tomorrow too, can't wait!

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 11 May 2018 04:17 (five years ago) link

ah, staying up til midnight (eastern) to listen to it when it hits spotify, the old release day tradition. i'm gonna give it a good listen before i hit the hay, and i can't wait.

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 04:21 (five years ago) link

Woah, surprised how different this sounds. Strong cosmic vibes. Cool buzzy synths. I like it.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 11 May 2018 04:22 (five years ago) link

Is this their Tender Buttons?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 11 May 2018 04:25 (five years ago) link

Black Car's got some nice synth arpeggios going on

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 11 May 2018 04:42 (five years ago) link

dang, loving "Drunk in LA" - reminds me of Pink Floyd

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 05:18 (five years ago) link

it's just kind of weird for there to be an epic guitar solo in a beach house song and for it to totally make sense

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 05:20 (five years ago) link

God-DAMN this is sounding good. "Drunk in LA" is my new favorite Beach House song.

Davey D, Friday, 11 May 2018 05:32 (five years ago) link

the little found audio snippets used in "Woo" are really interesting. it would be easy for them to be distracting but somehow they fit right in

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 05:37 (five years ago) link

the production is hard to nail down in that it does sometimes remind me a bit of broadcast, but it more often resembles JAMC / stadium rock

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 05:44 (five years ago) link

Loved this album from first listen and it's a grower. Now i think it will be a classic.
The melodies are superb too.

nostormo, Friday, 11 May 2018 06:10 (five years ago) link

‘Woo’ is exactly what I’ve always wanted a more shoegaze-driven Beach House track to sound like.

KevRus, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

sounding great on contact, lots of rap sample fodder on this

Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

Love the enthusiasm here, because I missed the last couple of Beach House albums, and by missed I mean didn't listen to, but I really want to hear this one now.

three tracks in this sounds like pure-grade hipster syrup

imago, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:52 (five years ago) link

sorry we're not allowed to use hipster as a pejorative

three tracks in this sounds like music that gets played at urban outfitters

yeah, i'm shocked that some Soundcloud dude hasn't already jacked Lemon Glow for a banger. it's readymade, just add ad-libs.

Beach House and Arctic Monkeys understandably get most of the attention today, and they're okay. I'd feeling these more:

Death And The Maiden - Wisteria: Second album of dream pop/post-punk from New Zealand group.

The Third Sound - All Tomorrow's Shadows: Third album from Italian psych noir band based in Germany.

three tracks in this sounds like pure-grade hipster syrup

Pay No Mind rubbed me the wrong way—one of the chord progressions made me grind my teeth—but the rest of the album is lovely.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 May 2018 16:58 (five years ago) link

Oh wait, wrong song. It was actually Dark Spring. Remove the first track of the album, and the rest of it's a delight.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 May 2018 16:59 (five years ago) link

have never been really into them but this sounds quite nice if not groundbreaking or anything

glad they went more in the direction of Sparks from Depression Cherry

Ross, Friday, 11 May 2018 17:17 (five years ago) link

It’s not their best opener, but I do love the abrupt transition into Pay No Mind.

Dark Spring gives me Ladytron - Velocifero vibes.

Bee OK, Saturday, 4 August 2018 19:54 (five years ago) link

niels - they are amazing live!

saw them on DC-TYLS tour. Highlights were anything from Bloom, beyond love and elegy to the void wherein victoria and the dude ripped the solos together! i think victoria was doing the feedback. they also played a special show for 100 a pop or so at an art gallery and played the majority of the last two records primarily to an audience in close proximity. I would see them every time they tour

Ross, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

good stuff, may catch them in october

niels, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 07:07 (five years ago) link

I saw them on the Bloom tour, great show, the band sounded ace and the set design was very cool as well. Unfortunately they had to cut the set short because of an approaching thunderstorm, so I didn't get to hear the finale of "10 Mile Stereo">"Irene".

ˈʌglɪɪst preɪ, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 10:45 (five years ago) link

i see them every time they play dublin and am seeing them again in october. absolutely wonderful live band.

caught their first of two shows in Oakland.

wow. it’s so incredible how an ‘indie-darling’ bedroom pop duo has managed to catapult itself into a shoegaze rock stratosphere.

they are such a LOUD and tight live act!

KevRus, Thursday, 9 August 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link

Saw them a few years back at the Fillmore and it was a massive, impeccable, and gorgeous set. Think it lasted more than 2 hours and it was simply amazing. I bet they're even better now and wish I could have found tickets

How are people feeling about 7 now that it’s been out for a bit?

Karl Malone, Thursday, 9 August 2018 20:35 (five years ago) link

Karl - 7 is their best record !!!

Ross, Friday, 10 August 2018 02:39 (five years ago) link

honestly 7 perfectly honed in on the best parts of DC and TYLS and brought them wide-screen - their best since Bloom

dj screwed (Ross), Friday, 10 August 2018 18:15 (five years ago) link

Update: this sounds amazing on vinyl.

Even songs like “lose your smile” which didn’t really catch my attention the first time around has won me. Woo and Drunk in LA sound warmer?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 11 August 2018 00:59 (five years ago) link

I think they’re a singles band

calstars, Saturday, 11 August 2018 01:46 (five years ago) link

i feel empty inside because i assumed it would be a grower for me but it doesn't seem to be growing. however, i initially felt the same about depresso cherry and thank your lucky starz, and then after revisiting them long after release i eventually grew to love them. so maybe i'll just wait a year or two.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 11 August 2018 01:51 (five years ago) link

It's the same ebb and flow for me and Beach House were I will intensely love an album for a short period of time, not care about it for several months, see years, and go back it and love it even more.

One of the most straight-up rock songs they've done.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 23 October 2018 05:19 (five years ago) link

I saw Beach House and My Bloody Valentine at the same venue, within a month of each other, this year. Both were loud, dreamy, and had spectacularly colorful animated projections. With this song, Beach House have more or less turned into MBV. So I want them to form a supergroup now, even though both groups seem sort of insular and might just cancel each other out.
