Howe is phenomenal and I think Yes was kind of the perfect vehicle for him because Squire’s bass playing and Wakeman’s keyboard really filled the space that more traditional guitar parts normally would, freeing him to do really inventive stuff.

Chet Atkins is sort of unfuckwithable as a guitarist but has never really moved me. Always more of a guy to appreciate than put on a record and enjoy for me.

To say that Steve Howe is one of the best musicians that England ever produced is like saying that Steve Howe is one of the best relief pitchers Michigan ever produced (his first 4 years with the Dodgers, dude was a damn machine - in '83, he gave up only 11 earned runs in 68 2/3 innings!). Which is to say, Steve Howe is fucking awesome, and his wildly-successful intentions to infiltrate contemporary rock with 1920's-style guitar might be one of the top 10 reasons many of us are devoting our time posting to this very site. And you gotta love how he's also a pretty good singer - that section in "Close To the Edge" when he and Chris are harmonizing for a 6 measures before Jon adds "I get up...I get do-o-own..." is freaking rad!

Sadly, I don't really know enough about Chet Atkins' original compositions. I know he was an incredible guitarist, but "Tempus Fugit" might even cause hardcore Chet-Heads to say "Daaaaaamn".

Howe is probably the gold standard of ability to play completely loose and relaxed while playing incredibly challenging stuff, everything he plays just flows through him, never sounds like he's going for difficulty points.

First solo on "Close to the Edge" is my favourite single moment from him but so good, generally.

Howe is one of my top ten favorite guitarists but I have never loved his his tone. Exceptional technique? No argument. But his tone? Kinda weird.

Howe is a pleasure to listen to always, even on songs that of themselves are not pleasurable experiences.

One of my favorite things about Topographic Oceans is his weird-ass solo in "The Anicent", really came to love it over time.
