This album is the best album.

I was kinda cold on this album at first but it's really growing on me - the last few songs in particular.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Monday, 9 April 2018 01:46 (six years ago) link

Growing on me, too. I like the really fast / herky-jerky one on side 2.

flappy bird, Monday, 9 April 2018 04:36 (six years ago) link

This is so good! I love how, for all the sweep and the swooning and the Liz Fraserisms, there's nearly always something to hook into rhythmically as well, it doesn't sacrifice momentum for atmosphere.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 07:41 (six years ago) link

this is their best one since they went synthpop

Works for me. I really like "The Louder I Call", though I went back to "Tween" and felt there just wasn't enough there to keep my interest, it just felt too insubstantial and gauzy.

finally got around to this and it's the best music in the world

Looking forward to finally seeing them next week.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 July 2018 20:12 (five years ago) link

yeah this album is incredible, possibly my favorite of theirs

supreme court justice samuel lance-ito (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 July 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

I love this album so much but I am also devastated that their cover of “We Belong” appears to have disappeared from the internet ;_;

Tim F, Monday, 9 July 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

oh solid now i have a fresh grudge against the av club

ciderpress, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 13:05 (five years ago) link

they're local heroes i grew up seeing them, back when they were called Monarch. glad they're still active despite living in different cities

could maker an argument for tracks 4-5-6 as well.

Hall of Fam (Spottie), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:02 (five years ago) link

damn, this record is gorgeous. decided i'm gonna just listen to their discography all day today

davey, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

i love this band.

i'm less in love with the latest record than earlier ones (i love jen's guitar playing) but it is very good.

they're great live, go see them if you can. they were one of my highlights this past weekend at the (honestly pretty half-assed) eaux claires festival. just as good in the sunshine as the club i saw them in last. plus a joni mitchell cover!

pretty much a perfect record.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Saturday, 27 October 2018 22:49 (five years ago) link

Yeah this is like my platonic ideal of a modern indie rock record, and there’s so much to focus on that it’s easy to overlook the frequently, subtly great lyrics (“and my whole life is in that space: after the cut, before pain”).

Tim F, Sunday, 28 October 2018 05:49 (five years ago) link

"It Was Not Natural" might be my song of the year, need to keep trying with the rest.

geoffreyess, Sunday, 28 October 2018 15:44 (five years ago) link

Can't believe it's been 10 years since "Please Concrete" hooked me for life.

geoffreyess, Sunday, 28 October 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

it is an excellent record though I think civilian will always be my favorite

she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 29 October 2018 01:14 (five years ago) link

yeah I love them all but If Children has always been my favorite. they had this sick song called "Half a Double Man" circa 2008, when they were writing and playing out all the songs that ended up on The Knot. I lost the only bootlegs I had of them playing that song... it was sort of like Deerhoof but heavier.

I really love "Evergreen". Seems like a one-off done for some Adult Swim compilation? I don't know much about this band. I liked their last album alright, but never went back. Now I'm re-listening to that as well as sifting through their back catalog.

beard papa, Thursday, 17 October 2019 19:29 (four years ago) link

Hey, I missed that one, thanks for the tip! Adored their last album, nice to hear they're still moving in the same direction.

Just read in a Washington Post review of Bon Iver live, that Jenn Wasner is part of the five-piece band backing Justin Vernon/ Bon Iver on this tour

"In addition to releasing new material, the group is mounting their most ambitious tour yet. Called JOIN, the tour will feature a newly expanded live band performing not only Wye Oak’s music but songs from Stack and Wasner’s respective solo projects, Joyero and Flock of Dimes, and beyond. These performances will include new music, re-imaginings of songs from deep in their catalog, and hidden gems spanning their parallel creative work."

new song is wonderful:

20 minute No Horizon EP out, a collaboration with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. First track "AEIOU" is gorgeous. Reminds me a little of Beach House with those drums and guitars.

Yeah this is lovely - though the use of a children’s choir throughout reminds me oddly of Verspertine.

album of the year for me so far, feels like it might end up my favorite overall Wasner thing that isn't Shriek

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Thursday, 8 April 2021 01:46 (three years ago) link

Love the bits of this flirts with country. I can almost imagine an Emmylou Harris harmony on "Awake for the Sunrise."

Indexed, Thursday, 8 April 2021 19:44 (three years ago) link

I think that although the first snare hit always seems to land on the 3, sometimes (in strong bars?) maybe the second snare hit is a little early and lands between 6 and 7, while sometimes it's right on the 7, but I think there's always a bar of 7?

I saw Jenn as Flock of Dimes opening for Sylvan Esso several years back and was really impressed. Kind of lost touch with her/them. The comments here about last year's album are very encouraging.
