Tearoom of despair

I'm quietly optimistic about Doom Patrol, the Titans series was at least 50% good and the Doom Patrol ep the best of the bunch.

Especially an all-DC one.

cosign on all the above; i imagine they'll do some sort of big tech package deal where it comes with something like youtube tv eventually though.

Looks like there’ll be a Warner streaming service in the fall. I expect they’ll roll it into that when it launches

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 25 December 2018 16:18 (five years ago) link

I find it unlikely the upcoming Warner service, the upcoming Criterion service AND the DCU service will all be running individually by the end of 2020.

Did Clark Kent have adventures as Superboy in the current/mainstream continuity, or is it still the post-Crisis thing where he didn’t?

What's that Phish song that goes "Bag it, Tag it"? (morrisp), Saturday, 23 March 2019 06:26 (five years ago) link

Guess this, uh, “clears it up”:

In current mainstream DC continuity, Superman does not begin his public superhero career until adulthood. However, as a teenager he joins the Legion of Super-Heroes,[51] and used the name "Superboy" while visiting the 31st century.[52] Thus, most of Kal-El's pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths stories with the Legion are once again considered canonical. In addition, Clark wears his Superboy outfit when he works as a clandestine superhero in and around Smallville.

What's that Phish song that goes "Bag it, Tag it"? (morrisp), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 05:37 (five years ago) link

Yeah this was 'clarified' when Superman and Superman watched Superman blow up then Superman left Superman to be the only Superman and Superboy became 'Superboy' and not Superboy leaving the way clear for Superman to have been Superboy.

The only trouble with that wiki answer is that although that Superman was Superboy in the future with the Legion, there currently isn't and never was a Legion because reasons, although the Legion members may exist but just not remember they never existed.

Following up on my post from 3 months ago, Doom Patrol is fkn great - full-on GMoz weirdness. So far we have had:

A black hole contained in a donkey from Paraguay
A cockroach narrator
A dog with the magic to save the universe inscribed on it
A giant floating eye in the sky
Another giant floating eye in the sky
A stare-off between the two eyes in the sky
Nazi scientist puppet shows
Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man
The lost city of Nurnheim, accessed through a priest's stigmata and inside a snowglobe
Some other shit

Elitist cheese photos (aldo), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 10:10 (five years ago) link

Is the Doom Patrol named the Doom Patrol from the start or do they only formally become the Doom Patrol towards the end of the series, after dressing up in Doom Patrol costumes and operating under the name 'the Doom Patrol' throughout the series? It's DC so I figured I oughtta check.

I've (ahem) acquired all of the episodes but am still very uncertain about how I'll feel about them. Might be helpful to consider the show as its very own thing, unrelated to anything that came before.

The First Time Ever I Fly @ U Face (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 10:26 (five years ago) link

The Doom Patrol got mentioned for the first time in the latest ep, and isn't them at all (it's a Celsius/Lodestone/Mento lineup).

i need to get around to watching that

i just realised matt bomer is playing negative man - have they really hired one of the most comically handsome actors working today and entirely covered his face in bandages?

Legion might come back following Doomsday Clock given some of the plot elements (Saturn Girl?)

The new Superboy, Jon Kent, is a great addition to the Superman mythos

Nhex, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 15:01 (five years ago) link

Titans now on Netflix UK (and worth looking at, as a minimum the Doom Patrol ep) so seems the logical destination in about 6mo.

This is my regular slot to wonder aloud i. Amazement that anyone at all still gives a fuck about the tedious old Legion.

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 23:03 (five years ago) link

Why is the Legion any more inherently tedious than any other DC thing that’s been around 50-80 years, and has been rebooted 4 to 10 times?

get your hand outta my pocket universe (morrisp), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 01:38 (five years ago) link

Because this whole game is about picking your arbitrary sides and giving other people's arbitrary sides a hearty round of the raspberries. The Legion? Pshaw! They're no L.E.G.I.O.N. '89!

The First Time Ever I Fly @ U Face (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 02:08 (five years ago) link

L.E.G.I.O.N. '89 were no L.E.G.I.O.N. '90.

steven, soda jerk (sic), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 02:15 (five years ago) link

lol!

Like I admit it's somewhat corny to purport to depict what Earth and humans will be like in 1000 years -- but it's no cornier than Planet Krypton, or the Green Lantern Corps, or (shudder) "Superboy Prime," or a lot of other DC stuff. Trying to spin contemporary cool out of Golden Age corn is their thing, right?

get your hand outta my pocket universe (morrisp), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 02:35 (five years ago) link

(Or "Silver Age," I guess... in fact one of their first attempts at "coolness" was probably when they tried to ghettoize the Golden Age stuff back in the day.)

get your hand outta my pocket universe (morrisp), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 02:36 (five years ago) link

to be fair, I kind of hate all that other stuff you listed. But yes, the Legion just seems a particularly dated and tedious bit of nonsense. But I'm aware it's hard to justify this.

Karate Guy and Matter Eater Lad and crying inside

Nhex, Thursday, 28 March 2019 01:04 (five years ago) link

I think a Legion revival, if done well (and I know DC’d track record isn’t particular strong with that), could be cool & timely — because (among other things) the Legion has a large cast of characters, at least half of them women (depending on how Luornu is split at any given moment, LOL); and their interest lies less in their powers than in their relationships and interactions with each other. Plus, their world sits at a comfortable remove from the messiness of the present-day DC universe... at least until the demands of “making a new continuity work” intrude to f up their shit.

get your hand outta my pocket universe (morrisp), Thursday, 28 March 2019 01:53 (five years ago) link

btw - I kinda like DC's intentions with a somewhat softer push on the New Age of Heroes line, which is largely a DC inversion of Marvel properties featuring mostly new characters introduced after <i>Dark Nights: Metal</i>. They're not all good, but I like that it was at least a creative push that was going for new books and characters and not just yet another universe reboot

At least Silencer (sorta-Elektra) was decent; Terrifics (Fantastic Four) and Damage (Hulk) were so-so. There's like three or more other books in the line I haven't gotten around to? Looks like they've already all been cancelled except for those first two anyway.

Nhex, Thursday, 28 March 2019 03:18 (five years ago) link

I think the Waid 'up yours, grandpa" Legion from (ouch) 2004 was pretty close to what you're describing, Morris - I remember enjoying it at the time, though after a while it just dissolves into soap opera again.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 28 March 2019 09:47 (five years ago) link

The Legion, when it's done right (so off and on before the last decade of pure suck), is a great super-hero book. Sadly, I don't think any of the minds in charge at DC have a clue how to make it one again.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 March 2019 13:55 (five years ago) link

Time to give Shooter a call, I guess.

The wettest sandwich you ever ate, guaranteed! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 28 March 2019 13:56 (five years ago) link

13-year-old Shooter's LSH run was better than 24-year old Shooter's LSH; imagine how bad 56-year-old Shooter's run must have been

Shooter's return to the Legion, a little over 30 years from his previous run, was his first major published comic book work in years. His run on the series ended with issue No. 49, one issue before the book was canceled.

steven, soda jerk (sic), Thursday, 28 March 2019 18:37 (five years ago) link

I certainly don't think the field would be any worse off if there were more thirteen-year-old comics writers.

The wettest sandwich you ever ate, guaranteed! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 28 March 2019 19:28 (five years ago) link

Waid Legion was pretty decent but then crashed along with Infinite Crisis IIRC

Nhex, Thursday, 28 March 2019 21:36 (five years ago) link

Yeah -- I never read it, tho I know they were revealed to be from the future of Earth-Prime (in Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds).

Ha ha ha... I forgot about this:

Superboy-Prime begins to live in his fearful parents' basement while reading the last issue of Legion of 3 Worlds. He then turns and talks to the readers, insisting they knew he was meant to be Superboy before Conner. He then proceeds to troll the official DC Comics message board on the Internet, remarking "They'll never get rid of me. I always survive."
