i can't say i've listened to big & rich in quite some time. i thought that album was funny though.

Me neither, though I never really got much out of it back then. Chewing Gum I haven’t listened to in ages either, although I seem to recall enjoying it the first go round.

Trying to remember another band I first got into when xhuxk wrote about them in the Voice (but think he preferred their earlier incarnation) that got a lot of scorn around here. The Soundtrack Of Our Lives.

Ha, I group him with the Dead and Doors in an Axis of Dweezil for which I finally found the following three past strategy of first and foremost ignoring, unless I happen to feel particularly zingy or, on the other side I feel like magnanimously embracing my fellows and saying “you know I do happen to like that one song “The Golden Watermelon Devotion for Easter L.A. Woman”
― Rudy’s Mood For Dub (James Redd and the Blecchs)

as i've listened to more music i find myself liking doors knockoff tunes more than i like the doors

this is probably a gateway to actually liking the doors

i used to loathe the dead but tyler converted me

I like that one Doors knockoff band from Michigan called The Stooges, but was never compelled to dig deeper.

I like tyler but have never felt any more than a passing desire to delve into The Dead, which has usually be rebuffed by some wack rhythm sectioning.

Really, it might just still be a coastal predilection, I got those VU space shuttles in my veins and never got over it.

The first band that comes to mind is the Sugargliders. Such a great indie pop band from Melbourne. I rate them about as much as the Field Mice which probably have quite some ILM fans.

I remember the War on Drugs getting a few basic insults in one of the top 77 albums threads. Love them, as do some few others on ILM admittedly.

the mono single edit of "down on the street" where they overdubbed some keyboards to try and make it sound more like the doors is great

I co-sign Scott S. on post-Somerville Bronski Beat. "Hit That Perfect Beat" is fantastically good. And to my mind, Doves' "Catch the Sun" was the best rock song of the Noughties.

Re: Joseph Arthur

i only know his 'the the vs merz' styled debut, 'big city secrets' : but its a bloody wonderful album.
not followed anything else since as i was under the impression that sonically things became a lot less interesting.
happy to be proved wrong.
― mark e

Big City Secrets does have a sound of its own, mostly thanks to the production, and I often wondered if this is perhaps mostly attributed to Real World/people other than Joseph Arthur himself. He performs several songs from that album live every now and then, most live versions sound quite different from the album versions.
I love that debut too, but you might be disappointed if you're looking for a similar sound in his later work.
That's not to say that he got less interesting sonically, as he's experimented a lot and he's always done a lot with layered loops. This is especially a treat live, when he gets his music together with enough loops so he can swap his guitar for a paintbrush and will paint while singing.

For a very versatile, interesting and in my opinion totally amazing record, I'd recommend 'Redemption City'. (It was released on vinyl and digital format only, but especially the digital album should still be easy to get via his webstore.)

I can't find mention of Citizens' Utilities anywhere. Lost and Foundered is a pretty great Pavement-y record from the mid 90s. I can't even find 'Roadkill' on YouTube. It's on Spotify, though: https://open.spotify.com/track/32Xm63Mpdr7JyfwLbDctaa?si=uYwh3fpcQ9O4StbSOjR6vg

Lenola

Anyone?

Evan, Saturday, 14 April 2018 13:30 (six years ago) link

people like them. even i say nice things about them somewhere on ilm. listened to the swerving corpse a bunch last year. i wasn't really listening to them in the 90s so much.

scott seward, Saturday, 14 April 2018 13:48 (six years ago) link

Most of the Lenola talk here looks to be at least 13 years old or so. Good to know there's still fans out there. They really hold up!

Evan, Saturday, 14 April 2018 13:53 (six years ago) link

this is easily one of my top ten or top twenty favorite rock albums of the '90s (non-metal division) and i have never met anyone who liked it as much as me. i've played my crappy CD copy year in and year out since 1991. i'm sure there are people who like it, but i've never heard anyone talk about it in any rave review critical way. maybe there was an issue of Mojo where they gave it its due. i think its a work of art as an album experience.

you need to listen to it loud on a good stereo system though. not on a computer/spotify/etc. the CD will do.the CD sounds fantastic.

scott seward, Saturday, 14 April 2018 13:56 (six years ago) link

Thee Hypnotics are on their reunion tour at the moment actually.

I like the early Lenola singles a lot. Got one of the later albums which is OK but not as into it.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 14 April 2018 14:09 (six years ago) link

That Hypnotics record is one I’ve never wearied of, and along the same lines, Gallon Drunk. Loud rock with Elmer Bernstein/Mingus horn charts pushing it over the top is the best sound. The Saints’ Eternally Yours, too.

two years pass...

I really liked the Kentucky-based band Sleeper Agent (their first album in particular), but looks like they’ve only been mentioned once in here, in passing.

revisiting this, and daaaamn... still slaps

this band was like anthemic mall-emo Royal Trux, or something. I know there are ILM posters who would dig this sh1t... check out their first album, Celebrasion, in particular. every song (except maybe track 9) is awesome. "Proper Taste" was my JAM!!

This album is really very great. I don't care how Belle & Sebastian-y they are or the fact that they shamelessly have the same name as the 60s band.

There are tracks in this link and this is also the only profile of them I've found, and it's their only LP (from 2005):

I love Telepath more than life itself, at least through late 2015. I'm of the [evidently popular] opinion that the quality of his work dropped off somewhat when he went sample-free. I've actually thought about starting a chronological track-by-track thread for Telepath/Virtual Dream Plaza if there were enough interest...
