at first, i did think the "high horse" chorus melody felt stilted or forced somehow, but then i grew to love it. maybe in part because of the awkwardness?

on my 3rd listen of the day, stunning album

"mother" is such a weird little composition. its brevity catches me off guard every time.

our reactions to 'slow burn':
me: 'this has a really stunning arrangement but i wish it changed up the basic bliss-out chord-sequence a bit more, we've heard it a zillion times'
tt: 'why not hear it another?'
it does modulate the third chord of the sequence nicely i guess
― imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 09:33 (five years ago) link
Oh come on that chord change in Slow Burn is amazing and completely elevates the entire song, I could hear it again and again for much longer than the song lasts.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 09:49 (five years ago) link
Fair enough.
Butterflies is really lovely too. More as we get it
― imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:13 (five years ago) link
What I don't get is how Beck's Sea Change can get such a (wrongful) kicking in the recent poll of his albums, and yet this is widely lauded - they occupy a similar sonic space and vibe to me (this is more pop, and less orchestrated, obv)
I know this is one of my insane comparisons and Completely Rong etc but I can't shake it. It's a positive comparison at least!
Wonder Woman is another good song. High Horse less so
― imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:28 (five years ago) link
Rainbow might be better if another high-profile female US popstar hadn't put out a piano ballad called, uh, Rainbow just a year ago, and it be quite a bit better than this. You played yourself Kacey!
That aside (and High Horse), this is a solid album with a couple of grand highlights
― imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:38 (five years ago) link
'high-profile popstar' ok w/e
― imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:40 (five years ago) link
"high profile," is that some sort of weed reference?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 11:39 (five years ago) link
clearly the word "the" is a weed reference, being one letter off from THC

Profile. Pro ... filé. Like, filé as in gumbo, filé aka powdered LEAVES. Profile=pro-pot.

I'm not sure I get what you guys talk about : the 3rd chord of the 4 chords sequence is the one you enjoy particularly ? I don't really see what's special about it.

I think "Velvet Elvis" is my favorite song on this album... the lyrics are basic, but I really like the groove.

Huh, pretty much the opposite for me. Sounds really clumsy to my ears

Loving this record but I must say "Space Cowboy" is a skip, it was a clever pun the first time I heard it, but repeating the pun 63 times wears out the welcome.
― startled macropod (MatthewK), Monday, 16 April 2018 22:31 (five years ago) link
otm
"Velvet Elvis" works though

Listening to Pageant Material now, and particularly digging "Good Ol' Boys Club" -- got some funk to it, reminds me of Bobbi Gentry.

I guess the lesson is I most enjoy her songs that have some groove to them.

I really like the latest album. Most of the melodies are great and the production is very nice but it's a bit too "clean" and the lyrics are pretty bland overall.I think I prefer the previous one : the melodies may not be as good but it's more country and charming (and sounds less like Starbucks music) + the lyrics are much better and funnier.
― AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 08:12 (five years ago) link
I've been skipping "Velvet Elvis", yes, the dopiest song on here.

"Velvet Elvis" probably stands out so much because it's a different team of songwriters, Natalie Hemby and this guy Kacey Musgraves - 2013 Anticipation

It might not be that specific change, there is one particularly gorgeous moment in there though.

“Luke Dick”?
― absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 14:54 (five years ago) link
ah I suppose it's the middle 8 followed by the instrumental/orchestrated part with vocal harmonies (which is the same chord sequence as the rest of the song but with variations on the bass). If that's what you have in mind, I agree !

I've been trying to figure out which specific folk album this reminds me of for like a week now and have yet to really do it; Suzanne Vega is the closest I've come but musically that's not right, it's only her voice

Does anyone get Josh Rouse vibes from Golden Hour - like the smooth, MOR sound from 1972 and Nashville?
― aphoristical, Monday, 4 June 2018 22:00 (five years ago) link
i can hear that, now that you mention it
i think Nashville is a super duper underrated record

Golden Hour is also perfect. Whole album is a real gem.
― Van Horn Street, Monday, 4 June 2018 23:29 (five years ago) link
my one qualm with "golden hour" is that "you're my golden hour" comes 3 songs after "you're my velvet elvis" but it's really a very beautiful song
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 June 2018 02:24 (five years ago) link
Finally got this from the library and, uh, this is the best album I've ever heard. A whole album that bottles up the wistful freshness I've only ever gotten from "Fastlove" and "Sweet Lovin' Man."
― geoffreyess, Monday, 2 July 2018 04:30 (five years ago) link
I'm feeling all the songs about living far from the people you love most. "And if my sister lived in town, I know that we'd be doin' something fun" -- feeling fine, and suddenly a moment that hits as hard as Lucinda Williams' "Crescent City."
― geoffreyess, Monday, 2 July 2018 04:36 (five years ago) link
Yeah definitely my discover of the year since I didn't know her previously.I may like the previous album a bit more but the latest record is clearly fantastic with some of the best songwriting and melodies I have heard in a loooong while !
― AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 2 July 2018 07:48 (five years ago) link
the production on this is incredible, one of the best-sounding albums i've heard in awhile. i've been listening to this more than anything else lately, along w/Ashley Monroe's Sparrow. my favorite remains Love Is A Wild Thing, but the title track is up there maybe bc it was also one of the songs she performed when I saw her live opening for Willie Nelson last year and it caught my attention more than anything else in her already-impressive set. It sounds like waking up with the sun.
