I loved the Dark Souls III DLC, both of them, but especially The Ringed City. It seemed to have more variety than ever as well as more unique enemies. The opening area with the tumbling castles is great and seeing one of the DS2 levels collapsed on its side was such a treat. Then there is that vast swamp navigating windy tree branches and horizontal castle towers. Then the cool sun dappled titular city which really feels like a Lost City. At the bottom of it all is another swamp, buildings sinking in the mud, patrolled by giant sorcerers, infested with bizarre insectoid goblins. And so much more! All in a single DLC that I played for at least 10 hours. Next to DS2’s (IMO the underground city was the only worthwhile bit) and DS1’s, I like DSIII’s most of all. Though Artorias will always be one of the best boss fights...

i'd be more mad about last year's #4 taking a spot in the top ten this year but i'm pretty sure a majority of this year's votes actually did discover/play it on the switch, so at least there's that!

i finally got around to playing cuphead a few weeks ago, co-op with a friend. my hot take was that if you think you'll like it, you'll probably like it, and if you think you won't, you probably won't. it is exactly what it looks like. it's very punishing but very rewarding if you're into that. couldn't imagine doing it alone though. couch co-op was a blast.

Love Hollow Knight, would definitely recommend it to people who like Metroidvania's and the music and art manages to communicate a lot of that Dark Souls eerieness.
In the middle of Horizon at the moment, it's fun but i'm doing a terrible job of keeping up with story.

― challops trap house (Will M.), Friday, 6 April 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link
i didn't spend as much time with horizon as i wanted before i had to return it to my brother but for as far as i got i was very into it and hope to pick up a (hopefully discounted) copy soon.
my game of the year, though, and i was pretty sure it would be before it even came out, was Persona 5. The last two iterations ended up existing in a weird space in my life where, for one reason or another, I was basically not doing anything for an extended amount of time (I think when I played Persona 3 Portable it was around xmas holidays in 2010, and I put in 70 hours in a week. Person 4 Golden, was around summer 2013, where I kinda had a dead-end job and no life and blasted through it on lunch breaks, after work etc.). This iteration was my Ultimate Form; I was unemployed, had enough money saved to basically do nothing for two weeks, which is exactly what I did. Persona games are perfect depression comfort food, in a way. When it's tough to feel much of anything, they're a rainbow spray of emotions for a hundred or so hours. The writing is a grab-bag of childish drivel and genuinely shockingly emotional moments. The "dungeoneering" aspect is by no means pioneering (although P5 may very well be the first of the three that IS), but it acts as excellent punctuation -- and counterpoint -- to a game that's pretty much about making friends, enduring hardship, and leaving your friends over a tumultuous year of school. During my extended unemployed stretch (during which I was newly single and newly without roommate for unrelated reasons, so, that is to say, INCREDIBLY ISOLATED) I powered through this and Mass Effect Andromeda. MEA left me feeling empty. Persona 5 left me wanting more.

My ballot:Nier: Automata - 30Ending E, nuff said
Earth Defense Force 5 - 25I was thinking of skipping this one until it got a localised release but I happened to get the EDF itch right around when it came out and impulse bought it. The series that keeps getting better. No, Insect Armageddon doesn't count, I don't care what it says on the box art, EDF = Sandlot.
Yakuza 0 - 24I got this on a whim and enjoyed it a lot more than anticipated. Any game that lets you beat up smug, gold suit-donning nouveau riche can't possibly be bad.
Persona 5 - 21More Persona, with all the good and bad it entails. Killer UI. SMT V might make me buy a switch.

great list! count me as intrigued by Nier: Automata
im 3/4 temples done with BOTW now lol. just taking my sweet time. feel like this is the kind of game i could play off and on for years.
Super Mario Odyssey was such a fun ride but i feel like i OD'd on it when it came out just playing non-stop. crossing my fingers for Haunted House Kingdom DLC...
Stardew is indeed great and great fun. and it's made entirely by one person, which is both inspiring and super intimidating! like the music alone is a brilliant achievement, to think the same person also did artwork and also did ALL the programming will never not blow my mind.
Cuphead just rules so much. really captured that Metal Slug feeling of nonstop beautiful bullet hells. feel like there was an opportunity to cheat with the art and they refused and went ahead and did things the hard way, and it really comes across in the presentation. each boss is a level. making it to each new phase is like reaching a new area. the sound work is great as well, the intros to each stage always make me feel like i just dropped a quarter into a noisey arcade game. ahh <3
great games all around! love these video games

one thing i really liked about Mario was the camera system, it seemed like Mario was larger on the screen most of the time, but the background was still readable. with the nice and colorful art style it made it look very good, like a lunchbox illustration at times. the bits where you were running in the HD city and hitting ? blocks next to street lamps were so wonderfully rendered and fun to play; a real dream come true.
when presented with the problem of GTA-style realism in rendering tech, Nintendo opted - thankfully and as always - for an abstract, somewhat art deco, Buster Keaton/Charlie Chaplin/Singin' in the Rain stylism. add in the incredibly intuitive Mario moveset (with only two buttons needed to play! <3 this NES-level simplicity) and the options for vertical transveral across a vast cityscape of skyscrapers, plus the 30th anniversary tribute section which is another nostalgia dream come true. New Donk City is level of the year for me. well done Nintendo! we cannot possibly imagine the great games we have coming our way =)
