More from Drag City:

...on June 22nd...John Renbourn Live in Kyoto 1978 comes from a tape made by a private collector who promoted shows for many years in Japan - and taped them immaculately! They came to light after his passing, and one of the many performances deemed release-worthy was this solo show at a coffeehouse in Kyoto by one of the legends of British folk - and really, of roots music in the 20th century! Playing in a style often dubbed 'folk baroque' John Renbourn busted out as a part of a duo with Bert Jansch in the early 60s, after which the two formed Pentangle. Later, John made records with his own John Renbourn Band as well as with Stephen Grossman and as a solo performer. His unique combination of traditional folk, blues, world and early music, all played with feathery-yet-incisive fingers sustained him for over five decades of making records and performing. Live in Kyoto 1978 catches him on a typically sweet evening, in front of an avid crowd whose ardor grows with each passing number, climaxing in a wizardly series of medleys that bring the house down. Beautifully recorded, and with liner notes from The Silence's Masaki Batoh, who was in attendance all those years ago, Live in Kyoto 1978 is a fresh testament to the genius style of John Renbourn.
(And from a few years back, check Renbourn's remarkably adequately-recorded and well-preserved The Attic Tapes, which are also living room/crash pad tapes from hither and yon in early 60s etc., with traces of and finally a full sighting of Davey Graham; Beverly Martyn's in there too.)

Grönland Records Announce Reissue Of Seminal Ambient Records by

David Sylvian & Holger Czukay

Plight & Premonition (1988)

and

Flux & Mutability (1989)

Release date: 22nd June 2018

Today, Grönland Records are proud to announce the reissue of one of ambient music's hidden gems, by two unique musicians whose paths originally crossed in the early-eighties while working on Sylvian’s debut solo album, 'Brilliant Trees'. In 1986, David Sylvian - of British Art-Pop band Japan - and Holger Czukay - founding member and bassist in legendary German Kosmiche band Can - were ostensibly reconvening for Sylvian to record a vocal for Czukay's forthcoming album 'Rome Remains Rome’. But on arriving at Czukay's studio - a former cinema in Köln - Sylvian began playing freeform, improvising on readily available instruments located in the studio itself. No sooner had Sylvian, on whatever instrument he’d been applying himself, start to structurally define/refine the performance than Czukay would stop the recording he’d surreptitiously been making. Czukay had attempted to capture the process of creation without a musician's inclination for refinement. This process, drawn out over two nights, gave birth to the duo's first, full-fledged, collaboration, 'Plight and Premonition'.

Having been out of print for some time, the parallels between the original release 30 years ago and now are quite stark; at the time of recording the Cold War was lifting - but still very real - after a bitter winter. The names "Plight & Premonition" and "Flux & Mutability" themselves hint at an instability. In Sylvian's words, the sessions seemed to touch on something: “A form of music that seemed to have been created while we were absent by instruments abandoned to the earth and the woods, sounded by the coarse winter elements.”

The version of ‘Plight and Premonition’ included here is a new mix by Sylvian from 2002. All the recordings have been fully remastered. The packaging has been redesigned by Chris Bigg with Art Direction by Sylvian with new, previously unseen, photographs by Yuka Fujii, accompanied by an extensive essay by David Toop.

Originally released separately, they are now packaged in a 2CD / 2LP set.

The 2002 mix of "Plight" and "Premonition" comes from "Camphor", a collection of Sylvian's ambient work. I think it's an improvement over the original.

THE CURE MIXED UP AND TORN DOWN

Remastered 3-CD Deluxe Edition Featuring 16 Brand New Mixes By
Robert Smith And 11 Rare Mixes From 1982-1990 Available June 15 From Rhino

2-LP 180-gram Vinyl Versions Also Available On The Same Day

LOS ANGELES - With the Disintegration album and its accompanying global Prayer Tour, 1989 had delivered a triumphant end to the 80s, but the first year of the 90s found The Cure unexpectedly unsettled.

Determined to keep up the momentum of the band's ongoing success, but knowing there were internal tensions to address before heading back into the studio, Robert Smith decided on a different course of action; curating an album of the band's rarer 12" mixes. As work on Mixed Up progressed, Smith realized that some of The Cure's earlier remixes didn't stand up to the newer ones.

Robert singles out Brian 'Chuck' New's dub style remix of "Pictures Of You" as the one that inspired him to take a more adventurous path. Smith notes, "That mix turned the music on its head, but at the same time left the essential heart of the song intact. As soon as I heard it, I updated the entire Mixed Up plan. My revised ambition was to compile an album that was contemporary without being dated, immediate without being obvious, musically inspiring, rhythmically exciting and sonically great!"

Two tracks on the album, "A Forest" and "The Walk," were not just remixed but entirely re-recorded, as the multi-track tapes for both songs had long been lost. Both songs were reconstructed in the studio with producer Mark Saunders, using original instruments and gear.

The band convened over five days in June 1990 to record a new track for Mixed Up. After a certain amount of fraught experimenting with beats, loops and sequenced bass lines, Smith decided to change the vibe. A demo entitled "PhaseAGE" that had previously been deemed 'too rock' was committed to tape as "Never Enough" and was released as a single in September 1990. The "Closer Mix" of "Close To Me" soon followed this and both songs were accompanied by customarily deranged Tim Pope videos.

With Mixed Up finally released, Smith felt he could at last move on, confident in a reenergized and reintegrated band. Smith continues, "The whole of 1990 was essentially spent emerging from the shadow of Disintegration, and we managed to do it in a creatively satisfying way; by the end of the year, I couldn't wait to start work on new songs for the next record."

Once the remaining 1981 to 1990 12" / extended mixes were compiled, Robert realized that there were too many for one CD and too few for two CD's. His solution was to deliver an entire disc of brand new mixes.

"I wanted a 3-disc package, but we didn't have enough 'historic' remixes - for a while I thought the 'extra-extras' CD would be Cure songs re-mixed by choice artists, rather than by choice re-mixers... that then got me thinking maybe I should have a go at one... so in early August 2017, I decided to experiment with Three Imaginary Boys. It is a pretty sparse multi-track; I pulled it apart at home and finished the initial re-mix in one session - and I really enjoyed the whole process," says Smith.

By choosing favorite songs rather than the usual singles, one of Smith's objectives was to illustrate the variety of the Cure catalogue, and by October of 2017 working on songs in chronological release order, he had remixed entirely the 16 songs that appear on Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras 2018.

For the Torn Down cover, Robert decided on a self-portrait painted in oils during the summer of 1990 which was originally intended as the sleeve for Mixed Up. He chose Torn Down as the title for the 'extra-extras' album inspired by the way he had 'torn down' Never Enough, stripping the song back to resemble his original 1990 PhaseAGE demo. "I felt it was a good way to bring the project back full circle...in a Mixed Up kind of way," states Smith.

The Cure's MIXED UP [DELUXE EDITION] will be available on June 15 as a 3CD set for ($24.98). Also available the same day, are the 2LP vinyl sets of Mixed Up ($34.98) and Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras 2018 ($34.98). Both albums have been Half Speed Mastered by Robert Smith and Tim Young at Metropolis Studios, London and are pressed on 180-gram vinyl and are housed in Gatefold Sleeves.

The Breeders: 4AD Catalogue Back In Print On May 18

All of the Breeders’ previous albums – Pod, Last Splash, Title TK, and Mountain Battles – will be re-issued on vinyl on 18th May. Available to pre-order from today, this is the first time Pod and Last Splash will be released by 4AD in North America.

The Breeders continue to tour their latest album All Nerve with further European dates announced for November. The group will also play two shows before FYF Festival in July. Currently on the road in North America, The Breeders will tour the UK and Europe throughout the Spring and Summer.

Pod, the 1990 debut featuring the line-up of Pixie’s Kim Deal, Throwing Muses’ Tanya Donelly, the Perfect Disaster’s Josephine Wiggs and Slint’s Britt Walford, was recorded by Steve Albini. Kurt Cobain listed the record as one of his top three favourite albums saying, “the way they structure [the songs] is totally unique.” Critically acclaimed when it came out, Pod’s legacy lives on – Pitchfork called it a “blissful mindfuck of a record,” and ranked it in their Best Albums of the 90s.
Last Splash was recorded in 1993 by what is now regarded as the ‘classic’ Breeders line-up of Kim and Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson. Including the twisted pop singles ‘Cannonball’ and ‘Divine Hammer’, it has become one of the defining albums of the 90s.

2002’s Title TK saw the band work with Steve Albini once more, with the Guardian saying it was “a welcome return to punky pop that knows how to flex some melodic muscle.” The album has been out of print on vinyl since its release.

Fourth album Mountain Battles, a perfectly formed album of 13 miniatures in 36 minutes engineered by Steve Albini, was originally released in 2008. Like Title TK before it, Mountain Battles has been out of print since its release.

All Nerve, the Breeders’ fifth studio album, saw the iconic line-up of Kim and Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson reunite for the first time since the release of the platinum-selling album Last Splash. Released earlier this year, critics and fans welcomed them back with open arms and they scored their highest chart positions – including top 10 in the UK – in 25 years

Soul Jazz puts out some crazy stuff. Got a few of the Punk 45 comps but they got bunches of compilations I would like to check out.

Have not yet checked out that Who at the Fillmore collection. Still curious but haven't gotten to the local store to pick it up yet.

One of these days those Led Zeppelin Fillmore/Winterland recordings are going to come out. I got to figure that the bad blood between LZ and Bill Graham might be one historical reason why those recordings have been on ice and never really been formally released. They had them up online for a bit on that garage website, but that I think is it except for the bootlegs.

It’s one show — April 6, 1968 — and it’s a monster. As I noted on the Who thread, Moon’s drums are poorly miked (roughly equivalent to half of the keys on Charlie Parker’s alto having gone missing), but the 33-minute “My Generation” is like John Fahey, Charles Mingus, Milford Graves, and Keith Rowe covering “Sister Ray.”_

ok that's a bit hyperbolic but it's good! i've long loved the bootleg i had from fillmore '68 (which might be from a different show? not sure, but "shakin' all over" is only seven minutes on this release) and i'm glad it came out. the who didn't suddenly become an amazing live band in 1970... there's also some nice acetates from their first attempt at a live album from fall of '69, but the '68 who is really my jam.

Third Man's putting out Trout Mask Replica on vinyl:
Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind.

Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but for Vault Package #36 the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest — its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you’ve only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90’s, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram fruitcake fish-scale colored vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling.

The French-only 7-inch single of “Pachuco Cadaver” b/w “Wild Life” will also be included as part of this overreaching package. As the only single ever pulled from this admittedly dense album, this is the first time EVER that “Pachuco Cadaver” has been repressed and comes wonderfully housed in a replica glue-pocket picture sleeve and pressed on a white colored vinyl. ALL vinyl in this package is lovingly pressed at Third Man Pressing’s state-of-the-art plant in Detroit, Michigan for that extra-special attention to detail. Simmer down now! More details and art bits they prob won't let stand for long as C&P :

Yeah, I was exaggerating a bit, but really it was Townshend’s playing that was heavily influenced by Mingus. He’s said that, among other things, the long acoustic passages in Tommy were inspired by Mingus solos. He even tried to get Mingus in the Tommy film, but Ken Russell nixed the idea, and the role went to Eric Clapton.

Yeah I gotta hear that! One I missed last fall: reissue of PSF's oft-molten maiden comp, a wake-up call to Westword noizeheads ov yore---tell it, Marc Masters:
The most immediately exciting material on Tokyo Flashback is drenched with fiery guitars and mammoth rhythms, mixed into a cacophonous lava pouring from speakers. High Rise, Marble Sheep & the Run-Down Sun’s Children, and Fushitsusha (whose first two albums on PSF, released before Tokyo Flashback, are legendary for their bleeding psych bombast) all stomp on the gas pedal until it breaks. But there are other gears on Tokyo Flashback too: Ghost’s seance-like acoustics, White Heaven’s Blue Cheer-style string wrangling, Kousokuya’s slow-burning metal, and a closer by Fushitsusha’s Keiji Haino that consists solely of his harrowing vocal calisthenics.

From Northern Spy:

A bunch of us purchased Marvin Pontiac’s Greatest Hits back in 1999 on CD, and some of us totally bought into the story: Marvin Pontiac was an enigmatic genius of modern music. He was the son of an African father from Mali and a white Jewish mother from New York. Having been killed by a bus, this was a posthumous collection. Jackson Pollock listened solely to Marvin. Flea, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Iggy Pop, Beck, Angelique Kidjo, Mike Gordon and Michael Stipe were fans.

John Lurie’s story was deeply amusing and his music was extraordinary. The whole thing was characteristically ahead of its time and guaranteed to leave a permanent mark on your consciousness. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it still is and still does! We’re blissfully psyched to bring this music to vinyl for the first time for Record Store Day and to compact disc for a one-time pressing. Check out the music if you haven’t already and please help spread the word. The package, co-designed by John Lurie and Adam Downey, features a detail of Lurie's painting The sky is falling. I am learning to live with it.

We also asked John Lurie to take over our weekly Spotify playlist called Office Ephemera. Listen here.

“I have never used Spotify and don’t know what Record Store Day is, but I am releasing Marvin Pontiac’s Greatest Hits on vinyl with the people at Northern Spy. They asked me to make a playlist. They are nice people, so I did it.” – John Lurie

For a long time, John Lurie was everywhere. If you cared about American independent art and culture between the mid-’70s and the late ’90s, you probably knew about his acting in films such as “Stranger Than Paradise,” “Paris, Texas,” and “Down by Law.” Or maybe as the host of his absurdist nature show “Fishing With John.” Or perhaps you heard his music as the composer of scores for “Get Shorty” and “Mystery Train,” or as the leader and saxophone player for his raucous jazz group, the Lounge Lizards.

During this prolific run, one of Lurie’s ventures was a little less visible. In 1999, his record label Strange and Beautiful released “Greatest Hits,” by someone called the Legendary Marvin Pontiac. According to press materials, Pontiac was a hard-luck drifter who made music in Mali, Chicago and Detroit before being killed by a bus in 1977. But since the album included a supporting cast of Lurie’s fellow New York musicians and featured a singing voice that sounded a lot like him, it wasn’t hard to guess who Pontiac actually was.

BACKGROUND

MARVIN PONTIAC was hit and killed by a bus in June 1977 ending the life of one of the most enigmatic geniuses of modern music. He was born in 1932, the son of an African father from Mali and a white Jewish mother from New Rochelle, New York. The father's original last name was Toure but he changed it to Pontiac when the family moved to Detroit, believing it to be a conventional American name.

Marvin's father left the family when Marvin was two years old. When his mother was institutionalized in 1936, the father returned and brought the young boy to Bamako, Mali where Marvin was raised until he was fifteen. The music that he heard there would influence him forever.

At fifteen Marvin moved by himself to Chicago where he became versed in playing blues harmonica. At the age of seventeen, Marvin was accused by the great Little Walter of copying his harmonica style. This accusation led to a fistfight outside of a small club on Maxwell Street. Losing a fight to the much smaller Little Walter was so humiliating to the young Marvin that he left Chicago and moved to Lubbock, Texas where he became a plumber's assistant.

Not much is known about him for the next three years. There are unsubstantiated rumors that Marvin may have been involved in a bank robbery in 1950. In 1952, he had a minor hit for Acorn Records with the then controversial song "I'm a Doggy." Oddly enough, unbeknownst to Marvin and his label, he simultaneously had an enormous bootleg success in Nigeria with the beautiful song "Pancakes."

His disdain and mistrust of the music business is well documented and he soon fell out with Acorn's owner, Norman Hector. Although approached by other labels, Marvin refused to record for anyone unless the owner of the label came to his home in Slidell, La and mowed his lawn.

Reportedly Marvin's music was the only music that Jackson Pollack would ever listen to while he painted, this respect was not reciprocated. In 1970 Marvin believed that he was abducted by aliens. He felt his mother had had a similar unsettling experience, which had led to her breakdown. He stopped playing music and dedicated all of his time and energy to amicably contacting these creatures who had previously probed his body so brutally.

When he was arrested for riding a bicycle naked down the side streets of Slidell, La, it provided a sad but clear view of Marvin's coming years.

Marvin held the tribal belief that having a photograph taken of yourself could steal your soul, thus these candid shots are the only ones known to exist.

In 1971 he moved back to Detroit where he drifted forever and permanently into insanity.

WHAT OTHER GREAT ARTISTS HAVE SAID ABOUT MARVIN PONTIAC.....

"In my formative years, as an aspiring bass player, there was nothing I listened to more than Marvin Pontiac." -Flea

"A dazzling collection! It strikes me that Pontiac was so uncontainably prescient that one might think that these tracks had been assembled today." -David Bowie

"A Revelation." -Leonard Cohen

"This record has changed my life." -John Lurie

"Marvin would kick your ass for nothing. A true genius, Marvin was a pure original." -Iggy Pop

"The innovation and possibility in this music leaves me speechless." -Beck

"Marvin is good." -Angelique Kidjo

"...beds of eerie, hypnotic, textural rhythm with that tragic voice of the American male floating on top, or actually below." - Mike Gordon, Phish

I haven't bought these because they've previously only been available as way overpriced CD/DVD or CD/Blu-Ray sets. If they release a reasonably priced CD-only version of this box, I might consider it, even though I don't really like the Wilson mix of Topographic:

YES: THE STEVEN WILSON REMIXES

Celebrate The Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer's 50th Anniversary With A Vinyl Set Featuring Steven Wilson's Remixes Of Five Classic Albums: The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Relayer And The Double Album, Tales From Topographic Oceans

Available June 29 From Rhino

LOS ANGELES - Yes mark their 50th anniversary this year and release YES: THE STEVEN WILSON REMIXES which spotlights five studio albums that helped secure the band's recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

YES: THE STEVEN WILSON REMIXES will be available June 29 as a five album set. It includes remixed versions of: The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971), Close To The Edge (1972), the double album Tales From Topographic Oceans (1973), and Relayer (1974). Each album features remixed audio by renowned producer Steven Wilson, released on vinyl for the first time.

The record case features artwork created specifically for the set by Roger Dean, whose artwork and trademark calligraphy are synonymous with the band's identity, two of the albums, Close To The Edge and Tales From Topography Oceans have new cover art, while the remaining three covers have been reworked by Dean.

After their initial release in the 1970's,Wilson's articulate remix shines a light on the stellar performances that run deep through each of these the albums, from hits like "Roundabout" and "I've Seen All Good People," to album-side length epics like "Close To The Edge" and "The Gates Of Delirium."

The music included in this collection confirms the band's standing as the most enduring, ambitious, and virtuosic progressive band in rock history. It also follows the band through a number of personnel changes. Starting in February 1971 with Yes's third studio release, The Yes Album, the band featured vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Tony Kaye and drummer Bill Bruford. Released just nine months later, Fragile was Yes's first release with keyboardist Rick Wakeman. The same line-up returned on 1972's Close To The Edge. A year later, drummer Alan White made his Yes debut on Tales From Topographic Oceans. And finally, keyboardist Patrick Moraz joined for Relayer in 1974.

LP Album Listing:

The Yes Album (1971)
Fragile (1971)
Close To The Edge (1972)

xp Boy the brainy 80s NYC hipster rollcall of Marvin's musical attendants---"the downtown crowd," as Lou Reed used to say---really takes me back, though they're a bit underemployed here, despite the alert, expert zigzag elevator groovage---underemployed compared to some other ventures, though not quantity-wise, would be better at half the length---about 25 minutes---or less (an excellent bonus EP w Lounge Lizards box, for inst). "Small Car" gets him out of the neighborhood or ward for a few minutes: it's about tiny farmers with "inch-long dogs" who are happy but one night they start to wonder where the stars come from, so they get in their cars made from cans and drive and drive, happy in the starlight and saying, "Hi farmer" to each other, 'til they come to the giants, us, or people our size, and agree that they don't belong here/there, so get in their can-cars and drive back home, but they enjoyed the trip and they're happy ever after to remember the night. Nice music.
Otherwise, in the usual fedoraheadspace, my fave line is "I put a piece of fur in my shoe to hide it from you. " Last track, "No Kids," has an intriguingly more serious vibe, or back and forth, coulda used a few more like that (although I kept getting interrupted, took most of the day so far to hear it all, so some may take hold later).

Numero Group announces Ectotrophia, the first authoritative compilation of American dream pop artist Happy Rhodes' earliest recordings from 1984-87, out June 29

The first authoritative compilation of American dream pop artist Happy Rhodes, whose singular songwriting and four-octave vocal range emanated from the pastoral confines of upstate New York in the 1980s. Her melding of classical music influences with synthesizer and acoustic guitar, and her enchanting and idiosyncratic singing, are favorably compared to heralded English chanteuse Kate Bush.

Fans of such artistic pop music would be remiss to overlook Rhodes’s similarly remarkable and otherworldly sonic transmissions, traversing tales of dreamers, outsiders, lovers and other lovely and terrifying creatures born of a wellspring of wild creativity and bold imagination.

Affectionately remastered from the original tapes, Ectotrophia gathers essential songs from Rhodes’s mid-'80s salad days, many written when she was just a teenager—wildly ahead of her time and unafraid to bare her soul to regional audiences, the ectophiles who’d eventually coin an entire subgenre of pop music in her honor. Dive deep into ecto, with the woman who started it all.

Five Temptations albums from their psychedelic soul period - Puzzle People, Psychedelic Shack, Sky's The Limit, Solid Rock, and Masterpiece - are being reissued June 1 on the Elemental Music label. These are all long out of print, newly reissued on CD with original artwork and track listing/timings and digitally remastered audio, packaged in deluxe gatefold mini-LP style jackets with inner sleeves and info.

Sky's The Limit is by far my favorite of theirs, followed by All Directions and 1990, which were on CD not too long ago I guess.

Far Out reissues two cult ’70s Brazilian albums featuring original members of Azymuth

https://thevinylfactory.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/VinylFactory-FarOutRecordings-ChicoAnysio-ArnauldRodrigues-B1.jpg

With Victor Assis Brazil, Orlandivo, and legendary producer and multi-instrumentalist Durval Ferreira.

Far Out Recordings is reissuing two 1970s Brazilian “comedy concept” albums from television duo Chico Anysio and Arnauld Rodrigues this June.

Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos (1974) and Azambuja & Cia (1975) are based on characters created by Anysio and Rodrigues, with sounds that mix jazz-funk, soulful samba-rock and MPB.

Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos is a satire on Brazil’s Tropicália movement, while Azambuja & Cia tells the story of Carioca conman Paulo Maurício Azambuja.

Both albums have been remastered for these new viny reissues, with original album artwork.

South African kwaito jazz

A future-facing hybrid of jazz, broken beat and afro-synth.

Composer and pianist Moses Taiwa Molelekwa’s 2000 album Genes And Spirits has been reissued on vinyl for the first time by Matsuli Music.

https://thevinylfactory.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/moses-taiwa.jpg

Released a year before his death at the age of 29, Molelekwa forged a unique international sound with a band that included Cuban legend Chucho Valdez, Cameroonian drummer Cuba Brice Wassy and Brazilian singer and fusion star Flora Purim.

The result is an album of genre-defying dexterity, created by a process of “finding a range of rhythmic alternatives”, of which the jazzy broken beat of second track ‘Spirits Of Tembisa’ is a particularly strong example.

The album will be reissued ion gatefold vinyl by Matsuli Music, who have already been responsible for reviving South African jazz gems by Batsumi, Black Disco and Ndikho Xaba And The Natives.

A new compilation called Turkish Ladies showcases female singers from Turkey in ’74 – ’88.

Spanning classical Türk Sanat, Argentinian tango, and Egyptian classical orchestras to disco, psychedelia, funk, the album is curated by Ladies on Records, from the archives of labels Elenor, Türküola and Şah Plak.

It features lesser-known female singers who never achieved international fame outside of Turkey such as Huri Sapan, Handan Kara, Gönül Yazar, and Esmeray, with liner notes telling their stories, in both Turkish and English.

https://thevinylfactory.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/VinylFactory-HabibiFunk008-KamalKeila-MuslimsandChristians-LP.jpg

From “the James Brown meets Fela Kuti of Sudan.”

Habibi Funk has launched a new series showcasing little-known music from Sudan’s jazz scene, starting with the first ever release of Kamal Keila’s album Muslims and Christians.

The label discovered Keila while on a recent trip to curate a collection of Arabic zouk tracks, where Keila’s name repeatedly came up in conversations.

For decades in Sudan, radio stations were not allowed to play label recordings on air, so stations hosted live sessions for musicians.

To prevent artists from self-releasing these sessions they rarely received copies of the tapes; however Keila managed to attain the studio reels of two, 5-track performances from the 12th of August 1992.

According to the label, “some of the songs were already written in the 1970s and have been part of Keila’s sets ever since, with only small changes for contemporary references in the lyrics and musically sometimes adopting to “new” sounds here and there.”

“Both sessions stand as a testament to how he stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics.”

Muslims and Christians includes Keila’s ‘Al Asafir’ which appeared on Habibi Funk 007: An Eclectic Selection of Music From The Arabic World, alongside nine previously unreleased songs.

The series will continue with albums by The Scorpions and Sharhabeel, forthcoming later this year.

Wow, that's one infodump of must-have releases up there.

Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos is a satire on Brazil’s Tropicália movement, while Azambuja & Cia tells the story of Carioca conman Paulo Maurício Azambuja.

Dunno if this needs explaining to any of the heads here, but the joke here is they conflated the band Novos Baianos ("new guys from Bahia") with Caetano Veloso.

A CERTAIN RATIO have announced the final phase in their studio album reissue series. Sextet (1982) will be released on orange vinyl in textured sleeve replicating the original Factory release, Change The Station (1997) will be released on double blue vinyl and Mind Made Up (2008) is out on double purple vinyl. Change The Station and Mind Made Up will appear on vinyl for the first time. CD and digital copies will also be available on July 27.

This is the latest installment in an ongoing collaboration with Mute and follows the release of The Graveyard And The Ballroom, To Each and Force. This Friday will see the release of I’d Like To See You Again, Good Together, Up In Downsville and ACR:MCR.

Sextet (1982) - Dark and brooding, yet bright and funky, Sextet is a firm favorite amongst the critics. The album saw A Certain Ratio refine the experimentation of the first two albums and deliver a masterpiece that is as off-kilter and weird as it is commercial and pop. Listen to “Crystal” here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWTAtkuVs0E&feature=youtu.be

Change The Station (1986) - An abstract album that sees A Certain Ratio bring the funk to laid back ambience in a way that only they could. The party is still there and it's more hypnotic than ever. Listen to “Yeah Boy” here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLY_0GNqAv0&feature=youtu.be

Mind Made Up (2008) - To date, this is A Certain Ratio’s last album release, and one that sees them explore pop closer than ever before - short sharp bursts of classic sing-a-long post-pop funk. Listen to “Bird to the Ground” here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bow8z-J3-f8&feature=youtu.be

A new compilation will follow later in the year and various box sets will be released in 2019 to mark the 40th anniversary of the first releases by the band.

Known for their carnival atmosphere live performances, A Certain Raito have been playing blistering sold out shows throughout 2017 and 2018. A new series of dates have been announced. See below for an itinerary.
A Certain Ratio embraced the ethic and culture of the late seventies post-punk explosion, but sounded like nothing else around them and refused to fit in. Formed in 1978, the band had various members throughout their career and a core line-up comprised of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson.

Hailed universally as pioneers of what became known as “punk funk” thanks to the success of “Shack Up” on both sides of the Atlantic, their sound is not easily pigeon-holed and their influence can never be understated. The band introduced the avant-garde elements of funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology to the pop song, wrapping it in a post punk aesthetic.

They have gone on to influence generations of musicians including Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, Happy Mondays, Franz Ferdinand, ESG, Factory Floor and Andrew Weatherall.

The Guardian’s Dave Simpson paid tribute to the band, once described as “James Brown on acid” in a recent Cult Heroes piece: “Once you start listening to A Certain Ratio, it’s difficult to stop”.

For a look inside the band’s early days, watch the inspiring short film Tribeca, directed by Michael Shamberg, here.

The Skygreen Leopards
The Jingling World of The Skygreen Leopards
SAB086 | LP, DL
PRE-ORDER FOR JUNE

“The Jingling World of The Skygreen Leopards” is a collection of songs from the first two Skygreen Leopards CDRs on Jewelled Antler; two mini albums written & recorded in the distant days of 2001, a year with a name that evokes a psychedelic future but which now seems very much part of the psychedelic past. Guided by Tall Dwarfs, The Monkees & The TVPs, the early SGLs concept was to mix automatic songwriting, two voices, California 12-string and put it on reverb smothered 1/4″ tape. The restrictions were that no songs could break the 3 minute mark, no jamming allowed, and you never went back to fix mistakes. All songs were written and performed by Glenn Donaldson and Donovan Quinn; both switching instruments and overdubbing until Glenn’s Tascam 388 had run out of open tracks.

From the womb of fanzines, flea market record crates of the 90’s and San Francisco’s fading victorians, it’s “The Jingling World of The Skygreen Leopards”!

Hosono House (1973) – RELEASE DATE: September 28, 2018

* First ever release outside of Japan
* Remastered form the original analog master tapes
* 2xLP Bundle (both on Color & Black vinyl) includes "Hosono House" & "Cochin Moon"

After Happy End’s amicable break up in 1973, Hosono released Hosono House, an intimate slice of Japanese Americana recorded at home with a back-to-basics approach akin to Music from Big Pink or McCartney. While his former band helped pave the way for the rise of “city pop” that reflected upon urban themes and city life, Hosono took a 180 degree turn towards the countryside for his highly-regarded first solo album.

Cochin Moon (1978) – RELEASE DATE: September 28, 2018

* First ever release outside of Japan

* Translated interview with Haruomi Hosono
* Remastered form the original analog master tapes

* Originally released in 1978
* 2xLP Bundle (both on Color & Black vinyl) includes "Cochin Moon" & "Hosono House"

Cochin Moon is a clear precursor to the groundbreaking synth and sequencer-dominated sounds that would come to define the iconic trio. Credited to Hosono and Pop Art legend Tadanori Yokoo (who created the cover art), Cochin Moon is a fictional soundtrack to a journey into unknown worlds, inspired by Hosono and Yokoo’s trip to India.

I think all of these will be available on CD as well, not seeing digital. For more info:

Manu Dibango needs litle introduction, born in Cameroon in 1933, Manu developed a musical style fusing jazz, funk, and traditional Cameroonian music. He’s definitely among the best known African

artists outside of Africa. Collaborations were numerous and include top acts like Fela Kuti, Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Sly & Robbie, Don Cherry and Bernie Worrell.

In addition to selling hundreds of thousands of copies of the albums he recorded, he played such huge venues as Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden. In 1972, at 40 years of age, Manu Dibango did something almost unheard of for an African

artist – he had a pop hit. His song “Soul Makossa” became an enormous hit which influenced popular music for decades to follow. First picked up by David Mancuso (The Loft), “Soul Makossa” took New York dancefloors by storm & in July 1973 it became the first disco record to enter the Billboard Top 40 —an early instance of Western pop experiencing a paradigm shift thanks to Africa. The song’s chant of “ma-mako ma-ma-sa mako-mako sa” echoes through the greatest-selling pop album of all-time, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and it’s in the DNA of the music of Kanye West, Rihanna, A Tribe Called Quest, Akon and The Fugees.

SUNN O))) Releases Downtown LA Rehearsal/Rifftape March 1998 Limited Edition LP
SUNN O))) has unleashed the earliest recording of the band's monolithic tones, revamped for a limited edition pressing via Southern Lord Recordings, as the label celebrates its twentieth anniversary, as a split label release together with Stephen O'Malley's Ideologic Organ imprint.

The Downtown LA Rehearsal/Rifftape March 1998 dates back to the earliest rehearsals during the genesis of the SUNN O))) project. The source is a C60 cassette tape recorded on a boombox, and the result is essentially an extremely raw noise/drone record. It was taped in the band's early practice space at Downtown Rehearsal (RIP), Los Angeles, in a practice room which the band shared with The Melvins and Goatsnake at the time. The LP sees SUNN O))) founders Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley on guitars and stacks of amps, the original cassette was mastered by Brad Boatright February 2018.

Longtime/old school diehard listeners of SUNN O)))'s massive sound and those who have watched the collective's transformation over the past two decades can find the brutal practice tape revamped as Downtown LA Rehearsal/Rifftape March 1998, available only through Southern Lord and directly from the band in a limited run on 180-gram vinyl LP - 900 black, 500 silver, 100 white, with machine numbering on the front cover - and digitally.
