The combat is also super rhythmic and soothing, generally a success I think.

Can't remember if I voted for Pyre. I've barely touched it but it's pretty cool. Sort of like Banner Saga meets NBA Jam?
I voted for Universal Paperclips. Best 'Black Mirror' episode of the season.

So I'll also post now the NON-2017 GAMES OF 2017... only two came up more than once.
Dark Souls III (2)
there was the DLC that did come out in 2017, maybe those votes were for that instead.
fwiw it showed up near the top of my list. they really delivered with that final Souls content. i remember beating DSIII and getting to that last area with the breathtaking imagery of all the castles twisting together and folding in on themselves and really hoping they would do something w that. it was such a treat when they did but also threw in a level from DS2 for good measure (laid out on its side a crumbling into post-post-post-apocalyptic ash of course)

27 - World of Warcraft: Legion - 21 points / 0.5 First-place votes / 1 VoteHi Yeah this is me, I'm aware no-one else here is playing it but they've continued to build better mousetraps. I should have talked last year about what they did with the design in Legion, in 2017 they provided not-one-not-two-but-three great raids and two level-cap stories - along with a lot of extra daft things to enjoy. Also I got to raid competitively again, and stick my face into guild drama.
34 - Yooka-Laylee - 17 points / 2 Votes
This was good solid Banjo-Kazooie fun.
46 - Monument Valley 2 - 14 points / 1 Vote
This seemed as good as the first to me - maybe a little more muted in parts, but that's partly the point.
46 - Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy - 14 points / 1 Vote
This is solidly in the Professor Layton tradition, the plot is quirky, but the game is all about the puzzles - there's 180 of various types in the game itself, then a new one daily for the next year.

voted for Samus Returns, it was solid and very welcome after the last few dreadful Metroid games, but not really up there with the best of the series unfortunately or even other contemporary 'Metroidvanias'. the structure of the original Metroid 2 definitely limited the world design, but the environments were a little uninspired and it lacked enemy variety. on the positive, it had some of the better shooting and combat in a Metroid

Andrew, I still play wow! Mythic+ has been super fun. Especially for people that exclusively PUG (like me).

There's a separate section for "non-2017 games of 2017," separate from the DLC which also got votes (I think from those two people no less)

this game is 100% my new MPQ and it's so much... kinder? and the microtactics gameplay is surprisingly deep and just very very good. idk how easy it is to jump into now (actually probably fairly easy), just so worth it. it doesn't make you feel like ass for not paying money.

both Arms and Injustice 2 were votes of mine. I hadn't played a real console fighting game since like SNES days so whoaaaa @ Injustice 2 & the hilarious hyper moves where you like fly your enemy into space then bash them with your spaceship and shoot them back to earth. it looks so gorgeous.

This was obv my number one, since it's pretty much the only game I play and the invasion meta-game is still very fun and interesting for me.
The DLC itself is great too, the last two bosses were good old-school challenges in terms of really having to learn their movesets & tells.

I loved the Dark Souls III DLC, both of them, but especially The Ringed City. It seemed to have more variety than ever as well as more unique enemies. The opening area with the tumbling castles is great and seeing one of the DS2 levels collapsed on its side was such a treat. Then there is that vast swamp navigating windy tree branches and horizontal castle towers. Then the cool sun dappled titular city which really feels like a Lost City. At the bottom of it all is another swamp, buildings sinking in the mud, patrolled by giant sorcerers, infested with bizarre insectoid goblins. And so much more! All in a single DLC that I played for at least 10 hours. Next to DS2’s (IMO the underground city was the only worthwhile bit) and DS1’s, I like DSIII’s most of all. Though Artorias will always be one of the best boss fights...
