Statik looks interesting, is it as short as that sounds?

i'm less than halfway into this so far and ended up throwing it some last minute points (it's good to be the guy who runs the dang thing because i don't get mad at myself for changing my ballot lol). i LOVE danganronpa 1+2 and it took me a while to get around to 3, but chapter 1 was in and of itself a complete shockah to the point where i figured "yeah, this is gonna be another good one." i really want to find more games like this and like the nonary games (which were re-released last year and i would've voted for if i hadn't played the old ones in other years). any tips are highly appreciated.

challops trap house (Will M.), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:51 (six years ago) link

honestly considering how much i loved DGR1, this might've ended up at the top of my list (or close to) had i finished it in time for this. i'll report back!

I voted for MeshiQuest ; it’s a squeenix food game. Is that diner dash style? Dunno. You have to cook things fast as the orders came in. I like its Japanese takes on food.

Oh, I didn't explain the bit where when you get out of the box, you move to the next level and they put you in a new one. Not sure how many there are total, 10 or 15 maybe? I think it's still fairly short but not THAT short.

JimD, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:07 (six years ago) link

I really wanted to like Everything, loved the idea but the execution was so disappointing. Soon as I got inside a goat and the goat started flipping head over heels around the landscape instead of, you know, walking like goats walk, I was out really. The appeal of "you can be any object in the world" goes out of the window if they then fail to act anything like those objects should.

@KM You like me may be mixing up Nier and Nioh

Nier is awesome and is on my ballot. But Nioh is the action-y samurai game who different stances which is sort of souls-like and made my team ninja (ninja gaiden), right? It’s supposed to be really good, I think it made a lot of year-end lists

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:44 (six years ago) link

I just had an iPhone autocorrect meltdown, sorry. Kept changing ninja gaiden to ninja Caiden and ninja garden

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:45 (six years ago) link

I put in a vote for Nioh as one of the few games I played, even though I bailed on it without getting very far. The combat is deep and there are some cool mechanics, but getting overloaded with different versions of identical weapons/armor and picking through them felt like spreadsheet work, and then I couldn't find my way out of a level where every quadrant of it looked copy/pasted, and I just went back to Dark Souls 3.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:47 (six years ago) link

Would play Ninja Garden.

Nier is awesome and is on my ballot.

ah my bad! i said that because i kept fucking them up all year. haven't played either of them, but i really wanna play nier, and i think i almost accidentally bought nioh when i saw it on sale.

not quite the same, but this year, while doing the rankings (mild spoiler both of these games are ranked) i kept fucking up "Prey" and "Pyre" even though I definitely played one and not the other; wonder if any voters were as dumb as me lol

challops trap house (Will M.), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 21:07 (six years ago) link

I completely know what you mean, I also mixed them up all last year! Also they were both in that zone of being a new franchise/sorta big budget but not action platformers

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 21:21 (six years ago) link

Bigger budget than a Celeste’s kind of indie game, I mean

51 - Tekken 7 - 11 points / 2 Votes

This was one of mine - illicitly acquired out of curiousity, but still a fine fighting game. It is freaking enormous though, because they've figured out (and play off) the fact that Tekken is also a soap opera, so you can earn coins to unlock every single cut scene from every single Tekken game.

65 - Cube Escape: The Cave - 7 points / 1 Vote

This is a fine, minor game from Rusty Lake - their 2018 game is currently waiting for challengers to take some of its 30 points off (which probably won't happen, because I'm really bad at playing current-year games).

65 - Calculator: The Game - 7 points / 1 Vote

Yeah no this is exactly what it seems, it gives you a bunch of buttons like "21->12" and "add 3 to the end" then it's up to you to get from one number to another in a fixed number of moves. It services my kink well and I'm not shocked I'm the only voter.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 22:34 (six years ago) link

only played Shovel Knight from the list so far. Thimbleweed Park is for sure on my must-play-someday list because I grew up on the Monkey Island 1/2 and Indy graphic adventures.

Nioh looks very cool and im intrigued. i hear it's one of the better attempts at doing a Dark Souls style game. wonder how the level design is...

72 - Hob - 5 points / 1 Vote
72 - Steamworld Dig 2 - 5 points / 1 Vote

Steamworld Dig 2 is a very polished metroid-style platformer with really satisfying upgrades. one of the really worthwhile indie 'metroidvanias' i've played in what's become an overpopulated space. You don't have to play the first game first and in fact this one pretty much just obsoletes it by being the same but better in every way.

Hob is a top-down metroid/zelda-ish adventure game with an amazing set-piece world design gimmick that unfortunately seems to have flopped pretty hard and put Runic Games out of business. the best way i can describe it is that it's the metroid gameplay loop except that instead of upgrading yourself to progress, you're upgrading the entire game world.

51 - Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony - 11 points / 2 Votes

The premier (only?) series for horny anime teens brutally murdering each other. These games are like Ace Attorney with all the dials turned up, plus a Lost-style meta-mystery layered on top. Everyone has a different opinion about which of the 3 is the best but you have to play them in order anyway so it doesn't really matter.

i havent played any of the other games from today's list besides Thimbleweed Park which i thought started really promising and then went badly off the rails. i suspect i'll have some jrpgs to ramble about tomorrow though

ciderpress, Thursday, 5 April 2018 00:09 (six years ago) link

I think I voted for all the games I played this year except one: Mass Effect Andromeda, which I got bored of extremely quick. Mass Effect 3 had a surprisingly fun co-op horde mode that I played a lot of, but this game's multiplayer was a big step back. The main story felt like more of the same ... pretty good but not my thing.

I'm playing Steamworld Dig 1 at the moment since it was a free ps plus game at some point. I figured I should "dig" into it before spending money on 2. It's somewhat fun but I'm not very far along. The art style is less ornate-looking than 2's.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 5 April 2018 00:11 (six years ago) link

I was one of the Tekken 7 votes - played it for a few hours at a local meet-up. Pretty good, maybe I'll pick it up when the complete edition with Noctis, Geese Howard and company are all in it together. Got overshadowed by the other major fighting games that came out this year though...

Karl Malone, Thursday, 5 April 2018 03:23 (six years ago) link

i didn't vote for DRV3 but it's the best of the series imo. the ending is completely bonkers in the best way possible.

Nioh was alright but not really on the level of Dark Souls etc. despite all the comparisons. The combat system is excellent - it plays sort of like a more technical/complex Bloodborne, but the biggest issue is the real lack of enemy variety - you fight the same types over and over again. The level design is fine but not quite as tight as the best of the Souls games.

ufo, Thursday, 5 April 2018 05:12 (six years ago) link

oh and as Jordan mentioned the random loot system in Nioh just made for a ton of inventory management busywork more than anything interesting unfortunately.

ufo, Thursday, 5 April 2018 05:13 (six years ago) link

I voted for GT Sport, it's the first Gran Turismo I've played in about 20 years (GT3 was the last) and I'd forgotten how much I like these games. In hdr 4k it's by far the best looking game I've ever played, and after playing (and boucning off) a few of the more hardcore forzas and dirts and things in the last few years, it's nice to go back to a game which does everything it can to pretend it's a hyper realistic driving sim, but which actually still cheats just enough in the handling model to keep it fun and playable without needing months of practice. Single player content was pretty slim at launch but they're regularly adding more in their frequent free updates, and tbh limited content suits me fine given my limited gaming time these days, means I still get to feel like I'm making some kind of progress.
