i found one of these threads recently bc i was trying to see if anyone on ilx had ever mentioned the autumns

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 18:56 (six years ago) link

the angel pool by the autumns is an awesome record incidentally

like this def. feels like a reference point for u.s. girls "sororal feelings"

Naw, man, I'm sure there's a ton of tacit Solex fandom 'round these part.

Mine is probably something widely-derided by the UK contingent and doesn't stir up much interest stateside. Corinne Bailey Rae, maybe? Zero 7?

Erasure

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:15 (six years ago) link

whoa i remember Solex

yes this is a redundant thread to be sure. probably shoulda bumped an old one but too lazy to find it

thots and players (rip van wanko), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:25 (six years ago) link

Hey old lunch - definite solex fandom here but it seems like the discussion has long ended. Her last album where she took a trip on a boat with fellow danish musicians was really cool and deserved more love

Eris (Ross), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:28 (six years ago) link

I've got a good one: Thievery Corporation. I'm not a fan per se but I like their brand of weak spliff exotic tourist Muzak.

A quick ILM archives search suggests the only possible TC fans on here are Moka, Hoos, and deej.

omar little, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:47 (six years ago) link

i've got Dubbed Out in DC and like it a lot, weak spliff exotic tourist Muzak is definitely a thing for me, i'm just not more of a sounds over who's making them listener i think

lmao i dig some thievery

marcos, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:52 (six years ago) link

i think if you spent some time in dc 2000-2010 it is hard not to have a soft spot for them

Yeah I like Thievery.

No energy, only great chaos (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:02 (six years ago) link

I like Sounds From the Thievery Hi Fi a lot, their next album was pretty solid too (the one w/Lebanese Blonde.) Their DJ Kicks was pretty outstanding.

omar little, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:03 (six years ago) link

i can't think of anything. if i'm thinking of things that more than a few people here have heard. lots of stuff i love that is just unheard by a lot of people. truthdare doubledare is one of my very favorite albums of the 80s. never heard anyone here rave about it. bronski beat were pretty famous. i don't know how many people were pro-John Jøn though.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:03 (six years ago) link

Cake are pretty universally derided here, right? I really like Fashion Nugget a lot, but I don't need anything else by them.

No energy, only great chaos (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:08 (six years ago) link

I think almost everyone mentioned here has a thread, or tons of threads (Erasure? Jamiroquai?).

But there is no Chumbawamba thread on ILM.

everything, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:08 (six years ago) link

i dig some of that late 90s global underground bullshit like danny tenaglia's two mixes

marcos, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:09 (six years ago) link

I used to quite like chumbawamba's 'slap' LP, and that one song by cake

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:10 (six years ago) link

i really liked Slap! too. but i haven't heard it since it came out. the only one i ever bought.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:12 (six years ago) link

yikes, i just reminded myself. i could never listen to that now. 1990 was a depressing year.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:13 (six years ago) link

Sigur Ros, the biggest SR thread has a classic first and second response that still makes me giggle tho'.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:13 (six years ago) link

Cats eyes get no love here - no thread, overshadowed by the other dudes band The Horrors

Eris (Ross), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:14 (six years ago) link

I was going to say Danny Wilson, at least one other poster likes them though: Danny Wilson

soref, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:15 (six years ago) link

I will rep for Sigur Rós.

The band that I like a lot that has some outright hate posts directed at them is the Ocean Blue.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:16 (six years ago) link

Cake are pretty universally derided here, right? I really like Fashion Nugget a lot, but I don't need anything else by them.

I started a Cake thread in 2011. Don't really listen to them much anymore, but they were the most important band in the world to me when I was a teenager.

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:18 (six years ago) link

I tend to a very lonely thread on the Dutch band Nits, whom I love unreservedly.

Ryan Power. The great unheralded prog-pop genius of our time, and I don't think I've seen him mentioned here once.

but one artist I really do like that no one here really cares about is Datarock

The entire Kerri Chandler thread is about 80 percent single-post revives by me.

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:30 (six years ago) link

Just had a quick spin through 'Slap!' - yeah, lots of it has not aged well at all. This one track though still sounds great, as long as you skip over the bits where they are singing / talking

are there any other Hue and Cry fans on ilm?

soref, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link

i have never stopped playing the first two Doves albums since they came out and sometimes i wonder if anyone still plays them at all. i mean people might have liked them when they came out but they feel kinda forgotten. i never get tired of them.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:35 (six years ago) link

Some Cities is a fantastic record, scott. I will rep pretty hard for that one.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 20:40 (six years ago) link

i never got into that one as much. i've never even heard their fourth album. those first two though...

I'm the same, Scott, still rate those first two Doves albums highly and pretty much fell off with the third which I found quite bland. Recently, I listened to the fourth album to see if I'd missed anything and hadn't really. I like the production on those first two LP's a lot.

two years pass...

I really liked the Kentucky-based band Sleeper Agent (their first album in particular), but looks like they’ve only been mentioned once in here, in passing.

revisiting this, and daaaamn... still slaps

this band was like anthemic mall-emo Royal Trux, or something. I know there are ILM posters who would dig this sh1t... check out their first album, Celebrasion, in particular. every song (except maybe track 9) is awesome. "Proper Taste" was my JAM!!

Some fey UK indie combo from 30+ years ago, in all probability. LOL. Though that's such a low-degree-of-difficulty move that I'll stop myself there.

This album is really very great. I don't care how Belle & Sebastian-y they are or the fact that they shamelessly have the same name as the 60s band.

There are tracks in this link and this is also the only profile of them I've found, and it's their only LP (from 2005):

all of my attempts to promote the somewhat popular (104k plays/month on spotify) australian melodic prog band caligula's horse has been a total failure, possibly because they are an australian melodic prog band

A search for "Trouble Funk" turns up only one thread, from 2004 and briefly revived in 2012. Was listening to Saturday Night Live From Washington DC earlier; it's killer. Two side-long jams.

would love a trouble funk topic, or at least a potpourri go-go one.

I love Telepath more than life itself, at least through late 2015. I'm of the [evidently popular] opinion that the quality of his work dropped off somewhat when he went sample-free. I've actually thought about starting a chronological track-by-track thread for Telepath/Virtual Dream Plaza if there were enough interest...

J. Sam, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 19:54 (three years ago) link

if human beings could live to be 200 I'd probably get into Telepath's stuff

frogbs, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 19:56 (three years ago) link

Am I dreaming or isn’t there a massive dc go-go thread that was started by curmudgeon a long time ago?

brimstead, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 19:56 (three years ago) link

I’m going through the entire 72 track VDP discography as a quarantine project and have been trying to make notes as I go. Not being successful but have found some gems in the slush.
