^ i voted for this, it is for "VR" i don't know how that works. i played it on an oculus?

anyway it blew my mind, i "got" the point of vr. it felt intuitive to the point where i was doing advanced things before the game taught me, e.g. grabbing and throwing enemies that jumped at me by instinct.

challops trap house (Will M.), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 16:51 (six years ago) link

a VR game apparently. i'm waiting to jump into VR for when an actual must play game comes out. it seems like a lot of tech exercises still?

Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 16:52 (six years ago) link

here's a lil tag i made that you can use for the VR games in the countdown

like when a VR game is in this poll's top 5 i'll be inclined to get whatever the ps4 VR hardware is called. nb i think it'll probably give me motion sickness.

i'm the 1 point vote. it was the 10th on my ballot and i used the recommended values posted in that thread so it only got one. happy to see it place tho it's a good throwback game with some decent puzzles that gets really unwieldy and sprawling midway through with like half a dozen active characters.

Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 17:01 (six years ago) link

for what it is (a throwback to SCUMM) it's much more innovative and interesting than it had to be. somehow tho not quite as charming or funny as real SCUMM games, or maybe that kind of humor worked better when i was 12yo.

Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 17:03 (six years ago) link

ok i put the platforms on all of the games for today's releases idk if i'll have time for toorrow's but i wil ltry

Animal Crossing was my fault, it's not quite "i'm just throwing points out", I guess it's my MPQ of the year, I bloody hate it at this stage but I've put so much time into it that I felt like I couldn't' justify not giving it any points. The pic you've used makes it look a LOT better than it is. It's got maybe 20% of the charm of a real animal crossing game, and maybe 15% of the gameplay variety, and it's really just a reskinned cookie clicker or something but it's sucked me in and I can't get out.

The Wipeout VR update came out this week and it will likely end up being my highest scoring P&C2018 game, you should totally jump in.

(oh yeah and RE7 too xp)

i didn't vote for this. i played it a little bit but it didn't really stick with me. i guess it's charming and if that's your kind of puzzle it's fun? felt a little too math homework for me. unless it gets crazy after like 20 levels or something.

my vote, also my disappointment. i sitll finished it and played a LOT of the content but i was ptretty unsatisfied. and i know it's very "food is bad and such small portions" but i am REALLY disappointed we never got DLC from it, i feel like some good bespoke dlc would've been real nice for a game that felt like it was just so largely paint-by-numbers with a few very memorable and satisfying missions sprinkled in here and there.

My vote, game is neat maybe hasn't aged well though. Enjoyed the combat and the pawn/ai system is kinda inspired but the lack of fast travel wore me out before i got anywhere near finishing it.

voted for Dead Cells, it's a pretty great rogue-like platformer, though it's still in development. very fast-paced combat and a wide variety of weapons

also played through most of Dragon's Dogma last year and it was alright but a bit clunky and the combat wasn't particularly engaging (though many have said it's the main draw idk?). the pawn system is interesting but there was way too much inventory management involving useless junk, and lack of direction with the world/mission design - a lot of areas you can just stumble across only to find they're completely pointless to explore if you haven't activated a relevant quest for the area etc.

the latest Shovel Knight expansion was great like the others

Statik is my vote, it's a lovely little vr puzzle game. Your hands are trapped inside a box, the sticks and triggers and buttons on the dual shock all control various buttons/dials/sliders on that box, you have to work out the right sequence to free yourself. Presentation is a little too sub-portal but aside from that I'd hugely recommend it.

great list! count me as intrigued by Nier: Automata

im 3/4 temples done with BOTW now lol. just taking my sweet time. feel like this is the kind of game i could play off and on for years.

Super Mario Odyssey was such a fun ride but i feel like i OD'd on it when it came out just playing non-stop. crossing my fingers for Haunted House Kingdom DLC...

Stardew is indeed great and great fun. and it's made entirely by one person, which is both inspiring and super intimidating! like the music alone is a brilliant achievement, to think the same person also did artwork and also did ALL the programming will never not blow my mind.

Cuphead just rules so much. really captured that Metal Slug feeling of nonstop beautiful bullet hells. feel like there was an opportunity to cheat with the art and they refused and went ahead and did things the hard way, and it really comes across in the presentation. each boss is a level. making it to each new phase is like reaching a new area. the sound work is great as well, the intros to each stage always make me feel like i just dropped a quarter into a noisey arcade game. ahh <3

great games all around! love these video games

Nhex, Friday, 6 April 2018 21:30 (six years ago) link

one thing i really liked about Mario was the camera system, it seemed like Mario was larger on the screen most of the time, but the background was still readable. with the nice and colorful art style it made it look very good, like a lunchbox illustration at times. the bits where you were running in the HD city and hitting ? blocks next to street lamps were so wonderfully rendered and fun to play; a real dream come true.

when presented with the problem of GTA-style realism in rendering tech, Nintendo opted - thankfully and as always - for an abstract, somewhat art deco, Buster Keaton/Charlie Chaplin/Singin' in the Rain stylism. add in the incredibly intuitive Mario moveset (with only two buttons needed to play! <3 this NES-level simplicity) and the options for vertical transveral across a vast cityscape of skyscrapers, plus the 30th anniversary tribute section which is another nostalgia dream come true. New Donk City is level of the year for me. well done Nintendo! we cannot possibly imagine the great games we have coming our way =)

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 6 April 2018 21:41 (six years ago) link

wow yeah night in the woods is a pretty big snub - in any other year i might have tossed it a dozen points but it missed the cut this year

ciderpress, Friday, 6 April 2018 21:55 (six years ago) link

I even played that one a little, it's super cute and well-written, just not very game-y imo. Great if you like chill exploration/storytelling though.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 6 April 2018 22:27 (six years ago) link

id approach it as a visual novel, if you're expecting a game there's not much of that

ciderpress, Friday, 6 April 2018 22:30 (six years ago) link

Hollow Knight was my #1, the best metroidvania/exploration platformer ever made. incredibly expansive, beautiful, and atmospheric. unlike most games in the genre which have a fairly strict core/intended path, Hollow Knight is a bit more open, allowing for many different routes/orders of exploring areas/obtaining abilities throughout the game which is a refreshing approach. the soul meter mechanic is really clever risk/reward too, combining the Dark Souls estus flask (relatively low health pool that can be healed at the cost of staying still) with the Hyper Light Drifter 'refill projectile ammo by doing melee damage' mechanic.

also voted for Mario, Zelda, Nier, Prey and Persona.

thanks for the poll!

Zelda such an obvious winner, everyone should play that game for sure
So many cool looking indies that I'll probably forget about it immediately. so many past ones on the backlog

Nhex, Saturday, 7 April 2018 07:30 (six years ago) link

Breath of the Wild is a world I'll come back to any time I want to explore. No other open world game has come CLOSE to the freedom I feel. Sketchy to describe it this way, but it mirrors several dreams of feeling free I've had, where I'll float over hills and under waterfalls and through forests and every little detail is a delight.

Love Odyssey in many ways, but I've concluded that I do prefer the more linear 3D Mario stylings of Galaxy, 3D land and 3D world, simply for the replayability. I want to play Mario primarily to do creative, surprising obstacle courses in colorful worlds. Not to explore for secrets. There' s some very lovely pure platforming in Odyssey, but getting back to it feels a bit more like work than in the 'course'-based 3D Marios. Still a solid top 10 place for me last year though.

abcfsk, Saturday, 7 April 2018 08:01 (six years ago) link

I didnt vote but I'm glad BOTW won. It has straight up spoiled me for all the other open world games I still dip into. Why cant I climb evry mountain and paraglide over evry stream in Oblivion or whatever dammit.
