it's like the world collectively felt quan's absence and reached for a replacement w/o realizing that the original was still putting out music

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:29 (six years ago) link

Hardaway is a better song though. Quan's instincts aren't as sharp as they used to be.

maybe if you repeatedly promise that you will never stop goin in, but you go a year without releasing new music, it feels like longer

it's ok. it feels kinda cheap to me. "changed" is much better to my ears but \(o_O)/

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:36 (six years ago) link

yeah idk, Hardaway feels like it lives and dies by its hook. Even at his most inessential on the new album (which definitely does not include Changed), Quan's stuff always feels more lived-in

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:40 (six years ago) link

yeah, im not the hugest fan of Hardaway, the hook is fine but it falls apart in the verses. i definitely don't think it's as good as Changed or something like YFN Lucci's Heartless

stormzy daniels (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:42 (six years ago) link

^^ or, speaking of Lucci, Everyday We Lit, which absolutely killed it with the quan vibe last year imo

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:44 (six years ago) link

yeah the Quan album sounds really flat and samey to me. Really screams for a "Flex" or a "Walk Thru" but there isn't a song of that caliber

Evan R, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:47 (six years ago) link

Quan's style of emotive singing is really effective when you're singing about something worth being emotional about, which I think is why "Hardaway" works. But ironically Quan himself is really indiscriminate about employing it. His voice will break like he's rapping about a fallen friend even when he's just like, rapping about routine finances

i think hardaway is closer to Lucci than Quan. It sounds an awful lot like "key to the streets" which was massive last year

two years ago?

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 23:54 (six years ago) link

It was still pretty big last year, at the very least. Wouldn't you say that Lucci is influenced by Quan though? Their styles of emoting are pretty similar, and Type of Way is the first song I can remember that did it like that (remember when Quan and Future were beefing because people thought he was biting Future at the time, though? lol!). His new album is a hundred times better than the new Quan is either way.

Really enjoying the Cardi album. Interesting that the collabos with Kehlani and SZA are among the best tracks on the album. Why aren't there more collaborations like this between female artists - queen bee faceoffs excepted?

Somewhat surprisingly, the Lil Xan album also sounded good on a first skim.

Holy shit there's a new Husalah album

stormzy daniels (voodoo chili), Friday, 6 April 2018 13:26 (six years ago) link

yeah and it's better than what i expected.

ANU (sisilafami), Friday, 6 April 2018 14:01 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I'm enjoying it a lot more than the e-40 & b-legit on the first listen.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 6 April 2018 14:13 (six years ago) link

the e-40 & b-legit is boring, sadly.

ANU (sisilafami), Friday, 6 April 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

I'm about 1/2 of the way through it and it sounds good to me, but im good with them just trading bars over sparse beats.

b legit 2nd verse on this >>

Man that Cardi B album is impressive

Evan R, Friday, 6 April 2018 21:03 (six years ago) link

that album hits all the expected notes of a well-made contemporary pop-rap album but it leaves me entirely cold

it's sort of like the opposite of impressive to me. i would say it's very... competent

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 April 2018 21:12 (six years ago) link

It's impressive in a Fetty Wap s/t "Damn, this really does live up to the singles" kinda way. Competent is way underselling what she pulls off here.

It's not profound or anything, but it's much more personal and well-rounded than it could've been. She does a good job playing off her persona while showing there's a real human under it. Kinda works on a Bruno Mars, pure entertainment level mostly, but her performance really sells "Thru The Phone"

Evan R, Friday, 6 April 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link

Oh damn that CRASHprez!!!!! Best thing I've heard from him yet

Evan R, Friday, 6 April 2018 21:19 (six years ago) link

the famous dex album is pretty good too, i don't like the single though.

Watching the Roxanne Shante biopic on Netflix, pretty well done, feels like a good moment for it with Cardi blowing up

Anyone check out Dr. Octagon? It's (surprise) kind of a mess but Keith sounds more engaged than I've heard in a long time

I liked the E-40/B-Legit on first try. No fuss, no muss, in a good way.

"Protect Your Soul" is dope

this prob goes on the wiki-entries-written-by-fans-thread:

James "Husalah" Ratliff (born May 13, 1979), is from Pittsburg, California. He began his career with the Pittsburg group the Mob Figaz, whose first album, C-Bo's Mob Figaz, was released in 1999. Like his close-friend, The Jacka, who was killed on a street corner, may he rest in peace, were part of Mob Figaz, and will go down as bay area legends.

I've seen this comparison a few times and wish I hadn't, cause they left me expecting hype/energy levels that never materialized.

Simon H., Saturday, 7 April 2018 11:03 (six years ago) link

It's not the same song, but I think it's great and it's her personality
Meek is a shouter, she's more yapping like Shante

Anyway I'm not even supposed to be the goon that likes this but it's a good album! I played it and the Dr. Octagon a couple times yesterday
