also the lack of propulsion is what makes songs like "oh what a world" and "love is a wild thing" so good... i find the application of the rubric limiting!!

yeah it's kinda dreamy
it reminds me of like a pop country version of neil young harvest moon sorta?

It comes down to my aversion to her voice and the singer-songwriter staidness of the arrangements, despite the vocoders and disco-lite filigrees. The Brandy Clark album from two years ago does a lot better with similar attempts to send electrical shockers through the material.
But half this album is good! It's impossible to hate imo

^^ this lyrics from Slow Burn made me think of Neil, that sort of odd aside he sometimes throws into lyrics that makes no "sense" but feels somehow more affecting than it scans on the page

Haha, Josh, what frat guys from 1992 are you hanging out with that you’re encountering ppl tittering over the pot refs. in those songs?
Ha, I'm thinking of times I've seen Dylan and Petty live, and as soon as they started playing those songs it was suddenly like white cap frat o'clock in the crowd, like it was activating a bunch of sleeper cells.

My wife was listening to this album a bit yesterday and the drums (and I guess bits of the album as a whole) reminded me of the way Aimee Mann albums sound.

― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link
"High Horse" is a miss for me -- the chorus melody feels forced, in particular.
― absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link
Chorus melody rules, casual eye rolls are a great way to be disdainful, whole point is her cheerful mood remains undisturbed

xp it's just a wasted opportunity to me, great melody, production and delivery but the lyrics do nothing for it
'Cause everyone knows someone who kills the buzzEvery time they open up their mouth^^hardly lyrics imo
I think placeholder "let's go dancing" lyrics had been preferable

the lyrics are weird -- the song is thisclose to being a dog whistle (because "high horse" is usually associated with moralizing) but decides it wants to be "That Don't Impress Me Much" at the last minute

xp I'm not saying High Horse isn't a good song, I just feel like the lyrics are a wasted opportunity, spending all that chorus energy dismissing some vague and indistinct character when it could have been about Kacey/me/us
― niels, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 06:17 (six years ago) link
I like this a lot. Thought her debut was overrated so I didn't even bother with Pageant Material but clearly I need to go back and reassess.
"Butterflies" always puts Genesis's "That's All" in my head.

― piscesx, Thursday, 5 April 2018 02:56 (six years ago) link
i gave this a proper second listen
there's a cluster of three tracks that are just amazing
motherlove is a wild thingspace cowboy
happy & sad is potentially a great track as well, which would make that four great tracks back to back, but it might be a grower
i'm a sucker for piano tracks so rainbow is a very nice outro
also what's the problem with smoking weed? she seems/sounds chill and would be cool to hang with
best track has to be love is a wild thing, though -- those keys after the music stops (at 2:56) reminds me a lot of future islands for some reason
stylistically it is a lot more varied than her previous albums i want to say, as well
