Yeah but he's got loads of kids, hasn't he?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 4 May 2006 09:08 (seventeen years ago) link

none of us are in with a chance... so what difference does it make? :'(

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 4 May 2006 09:10 (seventeen years ago) link

watching the video now - not sure about this actually.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 4 May 2006 09:51 (seventeen years ago) link

We have yet to see how she feels about being sprog of Keith, but she does love her nan.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 4 May 2006 10:21 (seventeen years ago) link

has anyone got that video in another format? I can't seem to get it to stream (yo Lily marketing dept - youtube?)

I like this but I'm still kinda sceptical about the mega-hype brewing for her... does she have any ballads incidentally? I'm not sure how much, if anything, of an emotional connection I'm getting from her music so far.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 4 May 2006 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Lily Allen Playground

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I was a little surprised about the video, too, considering that LDN is by far her best song. You'd think they'd spend the big bucks on it.

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

The album is called "Alright, Still" according to this here Google sponsored link....

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Cheers Mark Ronson!

SF: You've worked with Mark Ronson on his album, and on your album. His Radiohead cover is hot, but your collaboration on a version of Kaiser Chiefs' "Oh My God" is just jaw-dropping!

SF: Did he pick the track and you to sing it, or did you have some say in it?

LA: I actually picked " no one knows " QOTSA , but he made me do " oh my god " as he thought my voice was better suited to it .

>:(

This can only end in tears...

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 4 May 2006 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I've just got back from seeing her live. It was great. More report tomorrow as long as I can skive at work long enough. One of the reasons I was into her is that "Smile" hit me emotionally like no other song this year.

I'm fucking covered in sweat right now. Yuck.

("No One Knows" would be much better than "I Predict a Riot". I feel RONSON is the only thing that can fuck this up for her.)

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I fear this is the target Lady Sovereign has been spectacularly failing to hit for the last year.

Yes, Lily could well prove to be the Pat Boone to Lady Sov's Little Richard, although I quite like "LDN".

John Hunter, Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:48 (seventeen years ago) link

It is very near the mark. Her A&R is the same guy who found Ms Dynamite.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Am I the only one reminded of Nellie McKay?

Matt LC (flightsatdusk), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm loving Lily! "LDN" is one of the standout singles of the year so far.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Friday, 5 May 2006 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

#8 is selectah "wede man" on hoody records (1993)

DEEDS NOT WORDS (vahid), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i never want to hear this music

strongo hulkington is a guy with a belly button piercing (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

i mean, the artist is name selectah

the jungle track at the end is origin unknown's "valley of the shadows (31 seconds)", omni trio VIP remix, right?

DEEDS NOT WORDS (vahid), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:29 (seventeen years ago) link

dude the mix is GREAT! the only thing that lets it down is jammer's "go dj" (#15)

DEEDS NOT WORDS (vahid), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i think i hate england

strongo hulkington is a guy with a belly button piercing (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Try not to hate… keith allen’s daughter or not, she can write some sweet lyrics. Anyway, those missing mixtape tunes are 9 is ‘She taught me to yodel’ by Peter Barry, the junglist tunes at the end are ‘Incredible’ by General Levy, not UK Apache and that ‘31 seconds’ tune is called Valley of the Shadows by Origin Unknown from about 1993 (I think) – like someone else said, the mixing is a bit rough but the tune selection is spot on, reminds me of my own tapes :)

runforcover, Friday, 5 May 2006 03:29 (seventeen years ago) link

i think she's adorable and her music is light & fun like most good pop(and I was totally not sold on MIA or Lady Sov, or Nellie McKay either)

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:09 (seventeen years ago) link

LDN is the happiest song about pimps and crack whores and old ladies being mugged ever.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I lean towards Jess's take for now. It's a case where reading about people's reactions to it probably says more than hearing the music itself.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:43 (seventeen years ago) link

the mixtape is good, though! "piracy is terrorism" = still great, right?

DEEDS NOT WORDS (vahid), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:49 (seventeen years ago) link

for rough orientation, think nelly furtado.

(not an insult in my book.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Lily vs. M.I.A. is a troubling decision.

reasonably familiar, safe, bourgoise, appealing, genuine knack for vocals

or

"new" sounding, abrasive/exciting/radical popette, charmless, vocally annoying, little ability to own her tunes

It feels about as hip to choose the former as it did admitting that a lot of that Arctic Monkeys album was actually decent :/

fandango (fandango), Friday, 5 May 2006 06:02 (seventeen years ago) link

This thread is doomed.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 5 May 2006 06:10 (seventeen years ago) link

and to reiterate, she put credence on her mixtape

jergins (jergins), Friday, 5 May 2006 06:18 (seventeen years ago) link

lol look what I have started, I am of no relation to Lily Allen nor do I work for her! jus like the music and thought I should spread the word... which I think i have done succesfully.
I don't like the video, jus looks cheap, cant fault the songs though.

It's spelt Creedence. And Creedence rule.

(x-post)

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:40 (seventeen years ago) link

is this the beginning of a Creedence revival?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:42 (seventeen years ago) link

(and yes, I'm sorry)

StanM (StanM), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:44 (seventeen years ago) link

You'd better put some clear water between you and this thread....

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Like Lady Sov or the miserable MIA if they had any talent At. All.

David Orton (scarlet), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:02 (seventeen years ago) link

The best thing I can imagine this being is the new Betty Boo but I have a horrible feeling I'm going to be disappointed. What exactly are the words Belle and Sebastian doing on this thread?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:18 (seventeen years ago) link

keith allen’s daughter or not, she can write some sweet lyrics

That's the first thing I always look for in any form of music - good lyrics

Wow this thread has gone from hype to backlash within the space of a week: that's a new ILM record!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:23 (seventeen years ago) link

This is feeling more "like" cheese vs. chalk every post, and I'm regretting the Lady Sov comment quite a bit.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:25 (seventeen years ago) link

actually i think the first strokes thread STARTED as backlash.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Doesn't count then. I haven't looked but I assume the Dave Matthews band one did too.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:56 (seventeen years ago) link

right, ok, i went to her myspace finally and she describes herself as "pop/indie/ska".

i never want to hear any of you so-called 'pop' 'kids' mention her name to me again.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 5 May 2006 09:28 (seventeen years ago) link

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Friday, 5 May 2006 10:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Too bad Lex! I have now been made aware of exactly which "team" is working on this. I like LDN and will be blaring it out before I go out.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 May 2006 10:18 (seventeen years ago) link

the 'mixtape' sounds good.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 5 May 2006 10:47 (seventeen years ago) link

dude the mix is GREAT! the only thing that lets it down is jammer's "go dj" (#15)

so's we don't get confused - "Go DJ" is by JAMMIN' (aka DJ Zinc) (NOT the later grime dude Jammer, whose early productions were routinely FABO!)
agreed re Zinc, most of that whole run of breakstep is dud
one tune at a time ain't bad though, whole night of em's excruciating

love Lily's mix!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 5 May 2006 11:52 (seventeen years ago) link

'Go DJ' was good but obv. in '138 Trek' shadow. The version I had featured this great stringy bit.
