And hey, if you're right, you're right, great. But I'm sorry, I'm a skeptic for a LOT of reasons at this point.

From Mark's management:

http://www.simonlawlor.co.uk/mark.html

Mark is also near to completing his book, which should now be available this Autumn.

A few copies of the limited edition Alive ’05 CD, together with the 2-disc Magic Boomerang, are available from the shop section of this site.

Dave Fielding’s new band, Coconut DF, are planning various shows in UK and Europe during 2006. Dave and Reg are also negotiating the re-release of The Reegs back catalogue. And John Lever is busy promoting his regular Club Chameleon nights in the north west of England www.myspace.com/clubchameleon

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know exactly who is going to participate, but they are supposedly going to be billed as "Mark Burgess and the Chameleons," for what it's worth.

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Thursday, 3 August 2006 01:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmmm. Frankly I'm deeply suspicious. In all his solo days Mark's never tried to pass off his backup bands as the Chameleons, so for him to do that would be incredibly out of character, and might even leave him open for legal action by Dave and Reg in particular. (If it was Mark B. and the Sons of God, for instance, I wouldn't bat an eye.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 August 2006 01:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I pray to God, Satan, Thor, Harold Klemp, and various other deities that I'll get to see the Chameleons before I die.

But the main reason I clicked on this thread was to say that "Soul in Isolation" is really fucking entertaining if you imagine Birdy is singing "I'm a lime in here, I'm a liiiiiime, turn on the light."

I can't remember exactly where I read about this, but Mark is supposedly having a book out soon called View From A Hill I think. The passage I saw was about Joy Division and about the musical atmosphere in Manchester back then.

five months pass...
I just requested "Don't Fall" on radiohidebound.com!!!! They make you wait an hour before they'll play your requests, but most of the time I don't mind at all.

"I hear my name above everything else/Mark, Mark above everything else"

"How did we come to be...in the mess...ahhhh..FUCKING MESS!!!"

It must be my first year of high school again for The Chameleons are playing at loud volume in my house.

BUT THIS ROARING SILENCE WILL DEVOUR US ALL???

Or does he say ***WON'T*** DEVOUR US ALL???

Lick The Strobelight Lollipops (Bimble...), Sunday, 28 January 2007 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Don't fall! Don't fall!

Alone in a room I've been in once before
Shapes in the hall
I'm running for the door
I'm out on the edge
But I'm not defeated yet
I hear my name above everything else
Mark! Mark!
Above everything else
Don't fall!

It's a freak out
Nothing's familiar
Nothing seems to fit into the scheme of things
Seeing faces where there shouldn't be faces
No-one's ever certain what tomorrow brings
So don't fall my friend
All nightmares have an end.

Hiding inside
A room that's running red
The place to be
Exists only in your head
And the focus of fear
In the creases of a dress
A female dress
How did I come to be drowning in this mess
This fuckin' mess
Don't fall

It's a freak out
Nothing's familiar
Nothing seems to fit into the scheme of things
Seeing faces where there shouldn't be faces
No-one's ever certain what tomorrow brings
Don't fall

I know your back's against the wall
But this roaring silence
Won't devour us all
Don't fall
Alternative Lyrics from Marks songbook (Dearest dead days):

Don't fall! Don't fall!

Alone in a room I've been in once before

I'm running for the door
I'm out on the edge
But I'm not defeated yet
I hear my name above everything else

Mark! Mark!
Above everything else
Don't fall!

It's a freak-out
Nothing's familiar
Nothing seems to fit into the scheme of things
Seeing faces where there shouldn't be faces
No-one's ever certain what tomorrow brings

So don't fall my friend

Hiding inside

somehow it never really registered that he's singing his own name in that song

where's tha luv for "thursday's child"?

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 28 January 2007 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd like to find updates on the band. The band's website is woefully out of date, so any tips on comps, etc., would be welcome. One of my favourite bands which I constantly go back to. And "Thursday's Child" is fab. Still.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Sunday, 28 January 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Mark's doing a semi-sporadic solo American tour soon and the band is still dead. If you didn't catch the reunion I think you're SOL.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 January 2007 22:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah, yes, I knew this. Meant to say what material of theirs might be showing up. Some place to find reissues, etc. And the band seemed to explode in acrimony, no? Gory details welcome. I tried to follow the reunion tour/lp news through their site, but that seemed a bit messy at the time.

Not sure if they'll ever do a full reunion, but I did see Mark, Reg and John do a run through of 'Splitting in Two' (with Tony Serkis on guitar) back in December at a benefit concert in Middleton. Probably the closest I'll get to the real thing (sniffs).

I thought they were OK. The bloke from the Chameleons was the first 'famous' person I remember posting on the internet, who posted a bit on a.m.a or r.m.m. years ago.

What an odd day for this thread to have been revived.

Ned will be pleased to know I am now really liking this band also, I have only just discovered them. Hurray. I have had "Swamp Thing" in my head all WEEK.

Blame Curt1s.

I was listening to "Here Today" the night before I visited NYC and I didn't realise I was listening to it until quarter-way. Then I was like, "oic".

I'm seeing Mark Burgess in Austin tomorrow afternoon...and expecting to hear at least three Chameleons songs.

stephen, Thursday, 15 March 2007 04:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Watching Second Skin, the drumming stood out to me. Largely because everything else was too muddy in the recording, but the brief mentioning of Lever's drumming at the top of this thread also made me listen more attentively. I can see how someone might feel it's lagging - to me it feels like it pushes the song instead of pulling it. The standard for drumming seems to be to establish a beat and have everyone rush after it. It seems like his hits are milliseconds late instead of early, which does create this impression of sitting. I find that's an appropriate technique for their delay-washed sound. In a way, the lag even accentuates the groove.

Faisal Shennib, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago) link

so I happened to see a great show from Mark Burgess et al. in Austin today...in short, we all got to hear "Looking Inwardly," "Perfume Garden," and "Second Skin" in addition to a bunch of new stuff, which was fantastic in its own way :)
