three weeks pass...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8FoJjlxlmY

this is probably the most straightforward thing they've done, still really nice but i always love this sort of thing

ufo, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 14:11 (six years ago) link

They sound like PC Lorde to me.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 14:21 (six years ago) link

that's pretty accurate for this one and also why i like it

ufo, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 15:13 (six years ago) link

oh wow the album has two 9+ minute tracks i'm super excited for that

ufo, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 17:03 (six years ago) link

The Lorde-ness is offputting imo

imago, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 19:16 (six years ago) link

I am excited for the long songs though a bit

imago, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 19:17 (six years ago) link

Listening to an advance of the whole thing. Pretty good! Current favorite track: "I Will Be Waiting."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 17:06 (five years ago) link

Also I never thought I'd actually like a track called "Donnie Darko" but here we are.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 17:26 (five years ago) link

one month passes...

i love this album, it completely delivers on both the gorgeous pop songs and the 9+ minute psych epics

ufo, Thursday, 28 June 2018 15:08 (five years ago) link

I only have the four songs that have been released ahead of time, but they're great. Looking forward to the psych epics.

Yeah I'm looking forward to seeing them here in September.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:05 (five years ago) link

I bought the Zine they've made (plus the vinyl edition). Will report back if the Zine is any good. The distributor has warned the package could take up to 2 weeks to arrive.

Jeff W, Friday, 29 June 2018 08:59 (five years ago) link

This album is muuuuch better than the debut

imago, Friday, 29 June 2018 09:17 (five years ago) link

yeah it's a huge step up in every way. the debut showed promise, I especially liked Deep Six Textbook and Eat Shiitake Mushrooms, but I'm All Ears has so much more ambition and focus. it also helps that it's way less twee too

ufo, Friday, 29 June 2018 09:28 (five years ago) link

Falling Into Me -> Snakes And Ladders is the best bit of this record. Latter especially is quite something

imago, Friday, 29 June 2018 12:54 (five years ago) link

my album of the year probably

monotony, Friday, 29 June 2018 13:01 (five years ago) link

I'm also not sure that Cool & Collected doesn't invent a new genre

imago, Friday, 29 June 2018 13:11 (five years ago) link

probably my AOTY so far too

ufo, Friday, 29 June 2018 14:45 (five years ago) link

ok this is cool as hell

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Friday, 29 June 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link

i love literally everything that is happening on this record lol

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Friday, 29 June 2018 19:22 (five years ago) link

pulling off an 11-minute closer called "Donnie Darko" takes some serious chutzpah

Simon H., Friday, 29 June 2018 19:24 (five years ago) link

All of the shifts feel so natural, the album flows really nicely. They ARE all ears, it sounds great.

"i will be waiting" >>>>>

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Friday, 29 June 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

also i'm completely in awe of "donnie darko"

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Friday, 29 June 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

Yeah as I muttered above, that rather surprised me, that one.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 June 2018 23:12 (five years ago) link

It is an amazing track. Best psych epic of the decade?

They did the same thing in primaverasound but the crowd was better imho;

Yeah, Donnie Darko is amazing.

just reminds me
of AULD LANG SYNE

I love this shit

(•̪●) (carne asada), Saturday, 30 June 2018 13:54 (five years ago) link

Terrible band name tho

Rhubarb (Ross), Saturday, 30 June 2018 13:55 (five years ago) link

Terrible vocals too.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 1 July 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

Excellent vocals

Tim F, Sunday, 1 July 2018 21:48 (five years ago) link

Like, one of these girls has the most fucking annoying accent. It's a shame, because otherwise I like this record - although it's not great.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 1 July 2018 21:56 (five years ago) link

Wow, this album is fantastic. I really didn't expect to love it this much after how I little I thought of the debut. Everybody is OTM about Donnie Darko, it's one of the best things I've heard all year.

This is really shaping up to be an incredible year for albums and we still have Mitski and The 1975 to come!

kitchen person, Monday, 2 July 2018 00:21 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I agree that this is turning out to be a great year for albums - the best since 2013, probably. As for this album - it's okay. I had another listen to it, but got about three tracks in and put the latest Chvrches on instead. 'Donnie Darko' is decent, but doesn't deliver to the level everyone is saying it does - I suspect it'll be a different story once they've lived with the album for a while.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 2 July 2018 06:40 (five years ago) link

Okay, fourth listen and singing aside, this rules. 'Cool & Collected' the clear highlight, IMO.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 2 July 2018 16:56 (five years ago) link

I don't know how you could only be annoyed by one of them, I can't tell them apart at all (they're not annoying at all though)

ufo, Monday, 2 July 2018 17:01 (five years ago) link

The thing about Donnie Darko is that it's basically its own Jacques Lu Cont remix. The whole thing is pretty great, they have a lucrative future in soundtracking action-packed kids movies when the band reaches the end of its shelf life.

I thought the name was annoying until I realised a) they're actually teenagers and b) they fit into a kind of cartoonishly macabre British tradition that doesn't make its way into pop very often (thinking Roald Dahl, Angela Carter in particular here).

Matt DC, Monday, 2 July 2018 17:36 (five years ago) link

'Cool & Collected' the clear highlight, IMO.

I like too many songs to have a clear highlight, but I do love C&C. Among other things it feels like the long-awaited sequel to Sinead's "Jackie."

My LP and Zine have arrived. The Zine looks very nice but it's mostly photos, not much text. The main concept: the duo ask various other ppl they've worked with (photographers and artists as well as musicians) four set questions about creativity and print their responses. Conversely, Faris Badwan talks about L.E.G.'s creative processes; interesting fact: "Hot Pink" was originally "Slime Green"!

Jeff W, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:36 (five years ago) link

The thing about Donnie Darko is that it's basically its own Jacques Lu Cont remix.

I was also put in mind of Ewan Pearson remixing Cortney Tidwell and Michael Mayer remixing Baxendale - though I like it as a song better than either of those.

Tim F, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

Like, one of these girls has the most fucking annoying accent.

This is a weird criticism.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:29 (five years ago) link

No it isn't.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

Yes it is.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

I mean you'd think some people never even bothered to listen to CocoRosie.

shaqiri tip (nashwan), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

Some people don't enjoy the sound of the saxophone. Others don't enjoy the sound of slap bass. I don't enjoy the sound of her voice - I mean, it's not a difficult thing to comprehend.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:39 (five years ago) link

Accent.

solo track from Rosa, decently enjoyable

ufo, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 05:14 (three years ago) link

Okay lol @ Turrican’s freak out upthread, especially the “let me deflect these implications of sexism by repeatedly using a phrase containing a word that has become a racist slur”

DJP, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 13:30 (three years ago) link

LOL what a tool, I still have no idea what his problem was with the accent of one of the singers.

def feels like the only marketable choice rn is between 80s synthpop and pop-country, and LEG have chosen the one they're worse at

imago, Thursday, 11 November 2021 12:10 (two years ago) link

Yeah. The video is also so Folklore-y that it ought to be a parody. Still, will give benefit of the doubt til I hear the album.

ufo, Tuesday, 4 January 2022 12:38 (two years ago) link

Yeah, it's fine but not interesting.

the main synth riff is v generic in quite an off-putting way, but even so i do like this song, definitely felt some odd jumble of emotions watching that

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Tuesday, 4 January 2022 17:48 (two years ago) link

wow this is a bummer was excited to see the thread bumped, they really chucked it all to go for "random indie band opening for angel olson"

Bit disappointed by the new album. It's nice enough and the vocals are fantastic but they took away a lot of the things that made the second album so compelling. Some of it sounds pretty generic compared to what they were doing before.

kitchen person, Friday, 29 April 2022 01:20 (one year ago) link

Sad to hear this take.

Bee OK, Friday, 29 April 2022 01:53 (one year ago) link

yeah i agree, it's mostly solid (though the last two tracks are a fair bit weaker) but it lacks anything that really made them distinct before. i quite like "levitation" at least

ufo, Friday, 29 April 2022 05:17 (one year ago) link

Those last two songs are a real mood killer and feel like they should be bonus tracks. Kind of reminds me of Future Nostalgia in that way.

kitchen person, Friday, 29 April 2022 14:29 (one year ago) link

We are so gutted to have to pull tonight's show at Stag and Dagger in Edinburgh, there were tech issues beyond our control 😔 All tickets for tonight should be eligible for entry tomorrow in Glasgow - really hope to see you there 💝

hmm, I think this album's pretty great, esp. "Happy New Year" and "Two Ribbons." latter is one of those songs where I keep hearing the tension of it not going bigger in the way it seems ready to, so that every detail (slight distortion, a second voice tripping over the first, "watch them wash away") reads as a massive ripple in the fabric. reminds me of some other closing track(s) I can't quite place, has "So Tonight That I Might See" or "Looking Glass" energy maybe.

sloop johnnin' skater (geoffreyess), Monday, 2 May 2022 03:23 (one year ago) link

Agree the bookends are great, certainly the highlights for me based on one listen.
