i'm in favor of simplifying the rule however:
if someone is bobbling the ball while they go out of bounds and end up w/ full control (it never touches the ground) but they didn't secure it until out of bounds - a catch?
if someone obviously catches it (they seem to have complete control) but either while going to the ground or through a defensive player hitting the ball, it pops loose. is this a fumble?
― Mordy, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link
per the nfl no to the first one. in my nfl it would be a catch.
on the second, if the player is down before the ball comes out it's not a fumble, otherwise it is
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 18:14 (six years ago) link
that would kind of encourage the sideline to get in the way to make it difficult for the receiver to secure the catch OOB, right?
― frogbs, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 18:43 (six years ago) link
there are already sideline violations that would apply if someone actively tried to interfere
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 19:00 (six years ago) link
common sense dictates that you should have control of the ball and two feet in for it to be a catch. the controversy happens, iirc, when a player does this but shifts or adjusts the ball within his arms as he's preparing to go down. imo it's usually pretty easy to decide whether the player did this in a conscious, controlled fashion or not and that should be the rule

District Attorney of Harris County, Texas announced it has indicted Eagles’ DE Michael Bennett for felony charge for injuring a 66-year-old paraplegic working at NRG Stadium to control access to field at SuperBowl LI. a 66-year-old paraplegic working at NRG Stadium to control access to field
and why now over a year later?

#Jets coach Todd Bowles, at the annual coaches breakfast, said they traded up to No. 3 not with one player in mind but with 6-7 they believe they’ll have a chance at. Will zero in in a few weeks.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 27, 2018

to be fair, this is Bowles saying this, not Maccagnan. I'm hoping that Maccagnan had 2 or 3 specific dudes in mind when he made the franchise-altering trade

i have no particular opinion of his coaching ability and certainly the league doesn't need *fewer* black head coaches, but it's surprising to me that he still has a job

Cowboys expected to release WR Dev Bryant today, barring an unexpected last-minute change of heart, per @toddarcher and me. But the plan going into meeting that is now underway was to part ways with Bryant.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 13, 2018

Bryant is pretty good but way over-rated in the same way many Cowboys end up being. Even when he was really fast earlier in his career, the guy seemed to me to drop a ton of balls. Don't think he was anywhere top level as like Julio Jones or Calvin Johnson.
You chuck the ball around for well over 4000 yards or more every year, someone is going to catch 80 balls and have a 1000 yard season.
Someone might pay for the brand name, but at best Bryant is a #2 receiver now that's going to have to muscle for short passes and I don't know if he's got the hands to stick and get paid at that job.
I'd put bets on the Hatcats trying to sign him, that seems like a dopey move they would make.

One thing that cracks me up about every NFL off seasons is that no matter who the player is or plays, if they are available and worth talking about on sports radio, they automatically become a player of interest for the Jets.

Bengals usually like to develop their own 'talent', Mike Brown is usually way too cheap to sign free agents.
Adam Jones is still available on the free agent market I believe. Wild man has now played 11 years in the NFL and that is something that seemed really unlikely in his first couple years in the pros.
I also saw that Richie Incognito has called it a career because of 'pain'. I'd say one of the more infamous players of his time.
