Wasn’t much of a fan of the Essaie Pas record but this new solo album is glorious

Agreed on both counts. The aggressively tongue-in-cheek vibe works really well for her.

last one def. had that kraviz vibe vocally, but davidson is less detached and as you say LLC tongue in cheek

Oh whoops- im on Zing and hadn’t even checked which song was linked to. Assumed it was ‘Work’ which i love love love.

"aggressively tongue-in-cheek" is exactly why this works, the music is really good but it's so arrestingly playful too, real "Stock Exchange" vibes

Fuck me this album is brilliant.

one of the best things this year for me - her earlier stuff totally passed me by so had no expectations and got something like DAF meets ballroom house
saw her in Krakow a few days ago also - good, more techno-leaning, but the room felt too busy to dance which was a downer

this is a totally fucking awesome album
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 00:49 (five years ago) link
great album. also, she seems like a very bitter & unpleasant person, jeez
― crüt, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 15:30 (five years ago) link
Where are you getting that from? The record itself or an interview, because there's nothing in that interview that Ross posted that suggests that.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link
can't really hear anything on the record that suggests that either
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link
the first track
― crüt, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 18:05 (five years ago) link
i mean maybe i'm wrong but it sounds like she's making fun of people who have tried talking to her at gigs
― crüt, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 18:09 (five years ago) link
yeah, like i have no doubt she has to put up with a ton of stupid shit from horrible people but that song kinda kills the record for me.
― adam, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 18:42 (five years ago) link
Not all of the things quoted in that song sound like they necessarily come from horrible people imo!
― crüt, Sunday, 4 November 2018 02:37 (five years ago) link
she's kinda rude ime
― flopson, Sunday, 4 November 2018 02:48 (five years ago) link
I'm listening to the instrumental version of the album right now and am enjoying this a lot more
― silverfish, Friday, 9 November 2018 16:52 (five years ago) link
I think I will be listening to the instrumental version more as well.
― mark e, Saturday, 10 November 2018 12:51 (five years ago) link
This feels like a very surface-level interpretation that doesn't even make much sense when you take the whole song into account.
Sort of feels like the sort of comment that justifies the lyrics in the first place. Isn't the whole point of the record about the problems of maintaining a club centred career/lifestyle while also battling depression and mental health issues? I'm sure that looking rude to random people is an unavoidable part of that.
(It also works if you look at it as an electroclash album 15 years too late!).
― Matt DC, Sunday, 11 November 2018 12:52 (five years ago) link
as of right now I prefer the instrumental version and I feel kind of bad about it.
― fffv, Monday, 12 November 2018 04:26 (five years ago) link
tbf (to me) we were introduced by mutual friends, and it was ages ago. imo it's fine to be rude as a touring musician, but making a song about being rude to your fans is weird. i've never got all the way through 'Your Biggest Fan' so if the rest of the lyrics are about battling depression and mental health mea culpa but the first few lines sound like she's making fun of people who come up to her and awkwardly say 'hey good set' and try to make small talk
― flopson, Monday, 12 November 2018 23:27 (five years ago) link
Yeah she comes off as petulant and self centered in that song. I don’t really see any 2nd degree in it
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 06:33 (five years ago) link
My impression instantly upon hearing the opening track (having read nothing about it prior) was that it's about mansplainers or those who question her ability and place in the world of dance music
― monotony, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 06:42 (five years ago) link

So now we've established you're tutting and harrumphing about a record you haven't actually listened to, let's look at the lyrics properly. It's pretty obvious the song isn't "about being rude to your fans" - or at least not JUST about that:
What is it about you?Why are you so strange?
I love your musicWait, do you play in a band?Yeah, I-I totally saw youYou kind of remind me of um, you know that umm, ummUmm, umm ueehhh ueeEH EEEHH [coughs]
Oh what's wrong with you? ([?])Are you annoyed?(Oh my godWhat are we gonna do?Where are we gonna go?[?])
Hey, are you doing a DJ set tonight? ([?])Oh, I see (No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no)[?] ([?])
Man, I think she's faking her accent ([?])I mean, nobody talks like that(If living life the right way means keeping some sort of control over your emotions, I'm out. Oh yeah. Marie Davidson, what a bitch)
So, frankly, is this album about taking risks?(She doesn't even know what she wants)([?])
Oh hi, what's up? (Oh, that guy is actually gay)I'm sorry I missed your set, I heard it was amazing ( I think she's [?])
Do you have drugs? Can I help you roll your cables? ([?])
Do you know what's happening? ([?])Are you coming?Who are you anyways? Please come with me, please please come we're going nowhere([?])
'Cause she's fucked ([?] you're living the dream)
Do you really need to carry around all that gear with you?My god! (Can you hear my heart beating? Nah, nah, nah)
Are you insane? (Oh, can you hear my ego talking?)Does that bother you? ([?])[?] ([?])
Who are you? Mm? Tell me'Cause I wanna knowWho the fuck are you?
(If you see me in the morningAnd it seems like I'm about to cryIt probably means that I've lost itIt's not easy to stay soberIt's not easy to stay soberNo it's notDon't judge me for my mistakesNo words could explainHow deep is the pain)
The idea that there's no second level or that it's just about taking the piss out of people who talk to you at gigs only makes sense if:
- The bits in bold don't exist - The whispered interior monologue parts in brackets don't exist - The people who are talking to her are just nice people who are awkwardly making conversation at gigs (as opposed to people who are being condescending, patronising, creepy, being misogynistic behind her back etc etc) - The song isn't at least in part about the difficulty of separating those people from the people who are just being a bit awkward, especially when going through periods of bad mental health - Marie (or the Marie in the song) isn't fully aware that she doesn't exactly come across as a nice person in the song - There aren't reasons for that that are right there in the lyrics

Sorry about the question marks, blame Genius.

still think this part is bad lyrics
I love your musicWait, do you play in a band?Yeah, I-I totally saw youYou kind of remind me of um, you know that umm, ummUmm, umm ueehhh ueeEH EEEHH
