I saw Stewart Lee at one of them. He is actually responsible for me getting into Talulah Gosh cos he wrote an article for the Guardian about them in the mid 90s

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 18 March 2018 00:38 (six years ago) link

Popguns were a Brighton band right? Think I met their ex-manager at work once iirc

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Sunday, 18 March 2018 00:40 (six years ago) link

Think so. They weren't very good wherever they were from. I'm in a horrible Eastbourne pub at the moment cos the trains are all fucked up tonight

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 18 March 2018 00:48 (six years ago) link

There's a Sarah records gig at the Green Door which I would've been all over if I hadn't already bought tickets to the London night the next day - even as we speak, boyracer, secret shine and action Painting.

I've seen 2 fake even as we speak gigs over the last 15 years which were basically Mary Wyer plus whoever she could rope into doing it but apparently these ones are the real deal. Also I think action painting may be responsible for my favourite ever Sarah single

oh shit, stay warm and good luck my man! were it not 1 o'clock in the morning, i'd have sent you round to my sister-in-law's

Eh it's ok, although they kicked everyone out at 1 nobody seems to have noticed I've got on a train which is allegedly going to Hastings. If it's not actually going to Hastings I may be in a spot of bother

I'm there now and then visiting family. Should be at the Scritti gig at the Concorde2 on October 1st.

nashwan, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 12:38 (two years ago) link

Cool, what are you all coming here to do? Timing suggests academic year?

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 September 2021 08:27 (two years ago) link

Our Alice, from the old days of "Amber and Alice", is resident

Mark G, Saturday, 4 September 2021 11:27 (two years ago) link

Scritti gig!

That'd be nice...

Mark G, Saturday, 4 September 2021 11:27 (two years ago) link

I stupidly assumed it wouldn't sell out and then it did almost straight away! If anyone has a spare ticket get in touch.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 6 September 2021 20:09 (two years ago) link

Of course now I can't go due to, er, moving house next week...

Chewshabadoo! My ticket is yours if you want it.

cannot believe people still lose their penises over scritti, green could not sing, it's the only way he was able to reference derrida whilst knowing about the esoteric right wing core within deconstruction. emperors new clothes and that. Britney is and was by all accounts far more philosophically cogent as a pop universe, in spite of her politics being all over the place and pro-Bush.

RobbiePires, Friday, 1 October 2021 22:03 (two years ago) link

Green sounds as sweet as anything to my ears. Anyway, thanks for your message nashwan, a very kind offer but I was out of town tonight.

If anyone is feeling bulletproof, I’m DJing on New Year’s Eve:

Looking for a dance on New Years’s Eve, I’ll be playing Italo disco, Hi-NRG and other 80s synth heavy hitters @rossi_bar with other Flex DJs and perhaps a special guest…#ItaloDisco #Brighton pic.twitter.com/88ATecRHFZ

Can’t promise, but I might let you in.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 29 December 2021 19:22 (two years ago) link

ha you just reminded me that security guy really did not want to let me in last time, and when he reluctantly did so, he then followed me in a stood behind me watching while i bought a drink at the bar. really strange, not sure what vibe i was giving out unless i've finally achieved weird old geezer status

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Wednesday, 29 December 2021 20:38 (two years ago) link

I don’t know what security company they use their but they are often a bit heavy-handed on the door, requiring ID etc for people clearly over 30 etc. Annoying.

Yes, we had a good old dance, and I managed to play all of the Patrick Cowley Megamix of I Feel Love at midnight which pleased me a lot.

I’m away in Bognor of all places this weekend.

I'm away going to see Charli XCX.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 10 April 2022 14:09 (two years ago) link

Booooo. Nick, please come to Hastings, I'd love to see you, though if you can't make it then there will be a Brighton date in October (come to both, come to both). I probably shouldn't say but there is a possibility that the October date will officially be the last. We haven't fully decided but it seems improbable that we can carry on with everyone spread out.

emil.y, Sunday, 10 April 2022 14:35 (two years ago) link

Nick, please come to Hastings

i probably will! :)

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Sunday, 10 April 2022 15:02 (two years ago) link

Was fricking great to see you, Nick & CP. Gig was messy as hell but I had a good time. (Bit of a delay in posting here as I needed about a week to recover.)

Flying visit to Brighton over the next couple of days. Anyone got any good food recommendations? We're staying pretty central and would like to keep it relatively cheap... Not fussed about style so much, so place/reputation as much as the style of food, if that makes sense. Thanks!

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Tuesday, 11 April 2023 08:41 (one year ago) link

Welcome to Brighton! By relatively cheap is £10-15 for a main OK? A good road for eating is Preston Street, quite near the i360 tower and West Pier ruins

* Some of the best ramen you can get in the UK is at Goemon Ramen Bar (Their sister place KitoKito near the train station does good Poke too)
* Awesome Neopolitan pizza at Nanninella
* Great noodles at Shaanxi

If you want any specific reccommendations I’ll be able to offer more suggestions :)

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 10:56 (one year ago) link

Thank you, Chewshabadoo. We had to wing it in the end. We were staying at the end of East Street, and it was shitting it down, so we stayed local: drank in the Walrus and ate in the Curry Leaf Cafe which was lovely and pretty reasonable tbh. I've bagged your recommendations for next time!

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Wednesday, 12 April 2023 17:40 (one year ago) link

We are also in Brighton - well, Hove - for a couple of days, so appreciate the recs too, Chewshbs.
