kyle anderson is a steals maniac, good shot blocker too. wonder what kind of defensive numbers he would put up if he played starter minutes.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Friday, 16 March 2018 00:18 (six years ago) link

kyle has started 54 of the 60 games he's played fyi

NBA YoungBoy named Rocky Raccoon (m bison), Friday, 16 March 2018 00:20 (six years ago) link

didnt realize he was playing 27 minutes a game this season. cool

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Friday, 16 March 2018 01:17 (six years ago) link

well, when kawhi and rudy have both been out, their SF slot has been pretty thin. he even occasionally starts at PF with 3 Gs

NBA YoungBoy named Rocky Raccoon (m bison), Friday, 16 March 2018 02:07 (six years ago) link

a guy who should get 6MOY votes but might not: nick vanvleet

was thinking today about how guys like macmillan and scotty brooks don't get the COY buzz mainly because of their bad reputations lol

k3vin k., Friday, 16 March 2018 02:57 (six years ago) link

lol fred* vanvleet

k3vin k., Friday, 16 March 2018 02:57 (six years ago) link

Franks been awesome

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Friday, 16 March 2018 03:01 (six years ago) link

van vleet should be in the 6man running altho i don't think he has the raw stats for it. he plays in crunch time for the 3rd best team in the league and that should count.

James Harden doesn’t want any DNP-rest nights down the stretch of the regular season. “I’m good, I wanna play,” Harden said.

aka i can hear the rumblings about brow and im not letting this mvp chance slip away

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Friday, 23 March 2018 03:20 (six years ago) link

fwiw harden is known for wanting to play

lag∞n, Friday, 23 March 2018 05:27 (six years ago) link

also known for whining about not winning mvp

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Friday, 23 March 2018 05:55 (six years ago) link

yeah i mean im not saying he doesnt want it

lag∞n, Friday, 23 March 2018 06:01 (six years ago) link

just think maybe he should be focused on not breaking down in the playoffs again.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Friday, 23 March 2018 06:04 (six years ago) link

wld be wise for sure

lag∞n, Friday, 23 March 2018 06:05 (six years ago) link

not like he cldnt take a game or two off and still win it too

lag∞n, Friday, 23 March 2018 06:06 (six years ago) link

they've got a pretty easy schedule it would be dumb not to sit him against some of those teams

Clay, Friday, 23 March 2018 06:07 (six years ago) link

also got home court wrapped m/l

https://www.basketball-reference.com/friv/mvp.html

interesting that the MVP tracker tool on bkref has cp3 and steph 2 and 3 despite all the time they've missed

k3vin k., Monday, 26 March 2018 02:32 (six years ago) link

stephs advanced numbers this year were on par with his unanimous mvp year. dude is shooting nearly 60% from 2p

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Monday, 26 March 2018 04:15 (six years ago) link

awww i hope dejounte gets chosen!

NBA YoungBoy named Rocky Raccoon (m bison), Friday, 6 April 2018 00:27 (six years ago) link

wow al horford right behind dray there huh and he can play center for a whole game if he feels like it and shoots 15% better from three

lag∞n, Friday, 6 April 2018 00:36 (six years ago) link

still scared of rebounds tho

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Friday, 6 April 2018 00:37 (six years ago) link

keep in mind we are comparing him to dray here

lag∞n, Friday, 6 April 2018 00:38 (six years ago) link

wow al horford right behind dray there huh and he can play center for a whole game if he feels like it and shoots 15% better from three

― lag∞n, Thursday, April 5, 2018 8:36 PM (fifty-nine minutes ago)

shooting 3s not really considered part of defense iirc

k3vin k., Friday, 6 April 2018 01:37 (six years ago) link

its part of basketball tho

lag∞n, Friday, 6 April 2018 01:59 (six years ago) link

just a thought but what if the best defense is good offense?

call all destroyer, Friday, 6 April 2018 02:06 (six years ago) link

so...harden is actually....good at defense?

NBA YoungBoy named Rocky Raccoon (m bison), Friday, 6 April 2018 02:23 (six years ago) link

hey i don't make the laws

call all destroyer, Friday, 6 April 2018 02:35 (six years ago) link

the laws are the laws

lag∞n, Friday, 6 April 2018 02:36 (six years ago) link

except wheen they're outlaws. because....then theyre out.

NBA YoungBoy named Rocky Raccoon (m bison), Friday, 6 April 2018 02:37 (six years ago) link

heh

The @cavs 10 games better than the @celtics? Hard to see how that's possible. Let's revisit this in the spring.

seeing lots of parallels between the michell ROY push and derrick rose's MVP tbh

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 19:29 (six years ago) link

there's this guy who's clearly the superior player on both offense and defense, but let's vote for the inefficient high volume scorer on a dominant defensive team

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 19:30 (six years ago) link

wuut mitchell has been absolutely amazing the leading scorer on a team thats won like 30 of 34 or something its crazy, wldnt be surprised if simmons wins tho as philly has gone on a run of their own w embiid out and he obvs has the higher ceiling, theyve both had in some ways unpresidented seasons, in most years what tatums done wld be enough to win it and no ones even talking abt him, fwiw its morally and logically correct to dock simmons points for red shirting

lag∞n, Monday, 9 April 2018 19:36 (six years ago) link

simmons has prob caught up to how he wld be playing if he played last year at this point

lag∞n, Monday, 9 April 2018 19:52 (six years ago) link

it’s true mitchell has been the leading scorer on a really good team whose biggest strength is their defense, this was essentially the argument for d rose iirc — but simmons has just clearly been better. I’m not a huge fan of the “imagine if these two players switched teams” voting tactic because so much of production is situation dependent, but I mean if these two switched teams I think it’s pretty clear that the sixers would suffer more

pretty much all the stats suggest mitchell is a...nice 21 year old player while simmons is a legit star btw

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 19:56 (six years ago) link

i'd prob vote simmons but that's an undersell of mitchell. if he gets to the line a bit more and gets a little more accurate from 3 he's going to be as good at scoring as any guard in the nba outside the top 4 or so.

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 April 2018 19:59 (six years ago) link

in general and in conjunction with the point I was making about jokic in the reg season thread earlier we are just not very great at using the eye test to weight different basketball skills in assessing a players overall value, players who get buckets are always going to be overvalued and people who do little things and play defense are always going to be relatively undervalued. I think the eye test happens to support simmons anyway and the stats suggest it's not close but things like he's the leading scorer on a good team that sound so intuitively right are hard to people to shake loose

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 20:03 (six years ago) link

mitchell def has the potential to be a star, tho tbh simmons is already there and his ceiling seems to be MVP candidate and in the not too distant future, anyway the discussion is about this year and simmons is the better player

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 20:04 (six years ago) link

creating shots is the single most valuable nba skill u need to put those old musty nerd opinions in storage

lag∞n, Monday, 9 April 2018 20:07 (six years ago) link

I agree it's important but being better at it does not mean the player is necessarily better, hence my point about weighting and how we are bad at it

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 20:10 (six years ago) link

hitting home runs is the best thing a baseball player can do but it does not necessarily mean that the guy who hits the most home runs is the best player or even the best hitter, makes u think

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 20:12 (six years ago) link

none of this is to say mitchell hasn't had a sick year, he has, but simmons is way better and we should give the award to the better dude imo

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 20:16 (six years ago) link

i agree that hes been better and will prob win but i think mitchell has been great and also i think simmons shd be disqualified for redshirting

lag∞n, Monday, 9 April 2018 20:24 (six years ago) link

this breakdown of defensive positional guarding percentages is super cool: https://public.tableau.com/profile/knarsu3#!/vizhome/DefensivePositions/Dashboard1

Check out Ben Simmons

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Monday, 9 April 2018 20:34 (six years ago) link

ha yeah pretty evenly distributed as you might expect

k3vin k., Monday, 9 April 2018 20:38 (six years ago) link

he def wasn't the worst, he's about average over 82 games a this point probably tho def very good when he dials it in

k3vin k., Thursday, 12 April 2018 01:06 (six years ago) link

dialed it in for prob 10mins this season the rest he took off he was really exceptionally bad, its not a coincidence the cavs were also insanely bad

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 April 2018 02:43 (six years ago) link

yeah we are in general agreement that his defense is not great overall

k3vin k., Thursday, 12 April 2018 03:03 (six years ago) link

three weeks pass...

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/09/sports/nba-dwane-casey-raptors-coach-of-the-year.html

In a vote of his peers, Dwane Casey of the Toronto Raptors has been selected as the National Basketball Coaches Association’s coach of the year for the 2017-18 season — while Brad Stevens of the Boston Celtics stunningly failed to win a single vote from fellow coaches.

huh, dipo?

k3vin k., Wednesday, 23 May 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

heard rumblings of his defense being amazing this year. covington over draymond seems a little suspect to me. but fair enough, he deserves a lot of credit and dray was cruising at 80% all year.
