The best thing about the actress drinking iced coffee is that she’s repeating chapo memes on camera so I end up not seeing her as an elite.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 20:01 (six years ago) link

given that the de facto leader of chapo is a native manhattanite son of a new yorker editor i don't think they really lend a non-elite cred? nor is that the appeal of the show?

Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 20:02 (six years ago) link

but being an actor is obviously beyond the pale, as is drinking ice coffee

havent you guys heard actors have really reliable and lucrative streams of income, it's like guaranteed $$$

Hollywood dumped me, my family disowned me, religion is now a crime, and any sense of community has been completely corrupted. We have become a dog eat dog world. The less trust we have, the smaller our forces. And the more we feel alone, the less we are a threat.

what chapo memes did dasha say? all she said was that health care should be free. and that infowars employees have worms in their brains

They bring up Venezuela like four times in the full clip

https://youtu.be/febVuHWGx5Y

jmm, Thursday, 15 March 2018 01:19 (six years ago) link

venezuela isn't a chapo meme also dasha is only in like a minute of it

flappy bird, Thursday, 15 March 2018 01:42 (six years ago) link

Oh, I didn't mean that in response to you. I just thought it was amusing that they kept bringing up Venezuela.
('They' = the Infowars people)

o right

hell yea

flappy bird, Thursday, 15 March 2018 04:22 (six years ago) link

did you know they eat rats for dinner there?

flappy bird, Thursday, 15 March 2018 04:23 (six years ago) link

I agree her dismissiveness is the best way to handle an infowars gotcha thing and just laughing at/refusing to engage with the Venezuela questions as well is pretty much perfect. I think I was just seeing a lot of fawning on my twitter feed this morning.

Or, "Those of us who hated him since The 11 O'Clock Show Are Totally Vindicated."

Meanwhile, his previously neglected contemporaries have all risen up: Iannucci conquered America with Veep, Steve Coogan got an Oscar nomination for writing Philomena, and Chris Morris made the best comedy in twenty years with Four Lions.

Struggling to see how any of that trio were 'neglected' in any form?

carson dial, Friday, 23 March 2018 01:36 (six years ago) link

I think he's speaking strictly from an American POV.

Simon H., Friday, 23 March 2018 01:37 (six years ago) link

Yeah, at the height of Gervais' success Ianucci and Morris were definitley cool insider things to be into outside the UK (Coogan's profile a bit higher, I think).

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 23 March 2018 09:24 (six years ago) link

fwiw I had to Google Iannucci and I've watched 4 seasons of Veep and had never heard of Four Lions or Chris Morris before

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 March 2018 13:44 (six years ago) link

not to get all corny uk fuxx0r here but time spent catching up on the chris morris ouevre is time well spent

even if the current hellscape of broadcast news makes brass eye look a bit redundant nowadays

Brass Eye is essential viewing. (xp!)

Simon H., Friday, 23 March 2018 13:46 (six years ago) link

blue jam is i think my favourite of his tv stuff, but four lions is the best thing he's ever done imo

FL doesn't quiiiiite come together for me but I appreciate the effort to communicate how silliness and horror can coexist

Simon H., Friday, 23 March 2018 13:51 (six years ago) link

I think I love the animals episode of Brass Eye best of all. It's an experience where you you're still processing one joke and another has already passed.

same. here in the US, Chris Morris is just a mediocre NBA player from the 90s.

ogmor, Friday, 23 March 2018 14:52 (six years ago) link

i was just recommending 4L to someone yesterday. idk if it's quite as funny or insightful as ppl claim but it's pretty unique imo in its subject matter and its handling of subject matter.

Mordy, Friday, 23 March 2018 14:53 (six years ago) link

It's a good movie but I was a bit disappointed by how naturalistic it is compared to his more structurally inventive TV work. I understand that's probably adequate for the story he wanted to tell tho.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 23 March 2018 14:58 (six years ago) link

I held Nathan Barley about as high as Brass Eye for a long time.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Friday, 23 March 2018 16:16 (six years ago) link

Nathan Barley was decent but I can't agree with that assessment at all. Also it's only directed by Morris iirc.

Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Friday, 23 March 2018 16:25 (six years ago) link

Funnily enough I rewatched the Crime episode of brass eye last night - I love how it can be so absurdly broad and yet minutely memetic within the same sketch. This Ted Maul segment on youth crime ends with an interview with a family on benefits that is practically identical to most UK media treatment of the unemployed in 2018

“I’m a really big fan of Bernie. However, in many ways, I respect Cynthia even more because, while she shares a similarly progressive platform, she’s more courageous than Bernie ever was in seizing the Democratic party name and agenda,” 26-year-old data analyst Adam Sasson, who thinks Bernie will be the next president, explains. “Cynthia started her campaign by questioning if Cuomo is a ‘Real Democrat.’ This immediately shifts the frame of the conversation and attempts to take control of the party platform.”

Will Menaker, 34, co-host of the popular leftist podcast Chapo Trap House, also admires Nixon’s vision and jokes that he identifies as a #CynthiaMan. (He is listed on Wikipedia as someone who has endorsed her, although he says tweeting “Cynthia Nixon is going to beat Cuomo and be the next governor of New York” was not an official endorsement.)

Menaker cites her “solid social democratic politics” and “fairly consistent and strong stances against a neoliberal turn” in her party. “I did see a speech of hers where she said it’s not enough to just say Trump is awful, you need to offer a compelling vision, a competing vision that engages in people’s hopes and imaginations for a better future,” he says. “To get there, we’re going to have to get rid of Democratic party hacks like Andrew Cuomo and much of the New York State Democratic party, much less the national one.”

Blue Jam was radio

just noticed tears shaped like florida. (sic), Friday, 23 March 2018 19:53 (six years ago) link

They did the tv version tho, Jaaaaam (or some number of a's I forget), it's good even tho a lot is rehashes of the radio. I think they actually lip-sync radio bits which makes it even dreamier and creepy

I might be in the minority but I prefer a lot of The Day Today to Brass Eye, the tone has aged slightly better imo, but really it's all top-tier

But hey I'm a Canadian who watched all this on the internet in the early-mid 00's so I'm no authority

eephsthetic (Will M.), Friday, 23 March 2018 20:01 (six years ago) link

nope, just Jam, because Jaaaaam was a... remix of Jam? I don't understand anything about anything but anyway it's v good
