what's the deal with people being models? A Japanese thing?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:15 (six years ago) link

I don't fully understand it. A lot may be just weird reality show/unemployed/aspirational/attractive person labeling. But Japan has an idol culture that is unique and is tangential. Google it. I kind of hate what it represents but if it keeps lonely, insecure men from doing bad shit, great.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:25 (six years ago) link

ah yes, ok. I heard about this idols thing.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

Seeing Riko go through the process of it was interesting. It got very real at one point when we see her in tears after a photo session.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

Wow, this thread took off while I was asleep!

I’m four episodes in to the new season so far and have a few predictions in the way of big twists, but I would be equally happy if it just turned out to be that Yuudai can finally make a flavoursome-enough mizutaki.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:09 (six years ago) link

That picture upthread is a tableau I would want on my wall.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:10 (six years ago) link

I figured they often have models in because a) people like watching attractive people on TV, and b) models are likely to benefit professionally from a show like this. But is there a hidden reason I’m missing? There are also a ton of people there ‘starting a brand’, which is usually snuck in the narrative around their third day of being there.

Albert R. Broccoli seems to have the inside scoop! So cool that you’ve actually met some of them haha. Also I had no idea producers got involved with a Natsumi fight!

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:15 (six years ago) link

I think it's also me being a jerk where I am stuck on western ideas of runway or editorial models. I was critical of Minori being a model and really wanted her to pick a more interesting thing to do.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 11:26 (six years ago) link

I got the sense that Minori was more like a fashion model whereas Riko was an idol. Minori seemed to be doing mainly fashion shoots, while for Riko the fandom aspect was fundamental.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 15:15 (six years ago) link

I don't want to get all Tyra here but it was having to rethink the models as ones doing catalogue, print ads or hostess type of work instead of runway/high fashion. But I don't read asian magazines so maybe they were high fashion? Riko made me sad. She seemed very smart and it all just ended poorly on the show.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

Minori just got married to Keigo Uetake (a streetwear designer dude) over the holidays:

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:10 (six years ago) link

Riko was a gravure idol which is kind of like a "sexy-cute" bikini model, totally different uh... target market than a runway model. The exposure of the depth of the Riko/Hayato affair was one of the highlights of the Tokyo series imho. The editing around the dinner table catching their glances once the group let them know the jig was up was priceless!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:20 (six years ago) link

Also I had no idea producers got involved with a Natsumi fight!

― tangenttangent, Wednesday, March 14, 2018 2:15 AM (nine hours ago)

Yeah, they mentioned either on the commentary or alluded to the panel discussion where the directors/editors made the call NOT to show the fight between Misaki and Natsumi because it could have negative effect on Natsumi's career. But yeah, they said it got pretty savage and that all the guys and crew had to get involved!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:23 (six years ago) link

xpost Not talking about Riko being a model (sorry that was unclear) but all the other women, Minori, Natsumi, Lauren etc.

I enjoyed the discovery of the affair at the end but still was kind of sad. Hayato was shady shady. I liked how at the very beginning the other women thought he was gross.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:31 (six years ago) link

Hayato seemed like a creep. I loved Ryota Yamasato's comment about him on his first episode.
I am curious about if any TH couples are still together.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link

That was a crazy twist. I remember after the yukata date having the feeling that there was something not right about how they were interacting.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:43 (six years ago) link

Also Riko's Mom knew all along, so if you watch knowing that, it's super apparent and pretty funny. I think Hayato is not as terrible as people make him out to be, and if you follow along with the alumni, he's super popular with both all the guys & gals and apparently still a pretty good chef according to friends.

Minori does runway & print, Natsumi does TV & print, Lauren does tons of print work, she was all over on my last trip.

One edit about Lauren that didn't make it out was that she spent every summer in high school doing modeling (print) in Tokyo. I think her edit just made it seem like she had only done a foreign exchange semester abroad in Hiroshima.

The first series in Shonan (B&G Next Door) has some legit models, actors, musicians, talent, athletes & entertainers, much higher profile than any of the subsequent seasons.

third ep is emosh

||||||||, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 20:50 (six years ago) link

the panel is so good. yokui & the other comedian guy (when the jokes aren't being lost in translation) are actually hilarious

||||||||, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 23:44 (six years ago) link

When I first started watching TH Aloha for some reason I my netflix didn't have english subtitles available and I was trying to follow along in Spanish subtitles. So I always fast forwarded all of the panel parts. All of a sudden I got english subtitles and the panel was a revelation.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 23:46 (six years ago) link

I find it quite creepy tbh.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:38 (six years ago) link

This season is kind of crazy... A lot of weird tensions flying around and reactions that just seem off-kilter. I thought I had some decent predictions lined up but now I’m not so sure... Money’s on something dramatic happening with either Yuudai or Tsubasa though. My OWN money that is.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:39 (six years ago) link

The whole show or the presenters? I’m sure either way it’s a fair comment in some regards.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:40 (six years ago) link

Driving me crazy that I can't watch until this weekend (houseguest).

Yerac, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:41 (six years ago) link

Always knew there was more to that Natsumi/Misaki fight. Misaki seemed terrified for a while afterwards until Byrnes arrived on the scene, aaww. It would be nice if they stayed together! Minori and her new husband look very sweet together.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:43 (six years ago) link

That must be hard. I’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum. I should really be writing an essay this week anyway...

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:45 (six years ago) link

My spouse (and houseguest) walked in and I was watching Greatest Homes or whatever that new show is called, and he saw the reflection in the window and started chastising me for watching TH without him. He just saw people sitting down in a living room and thought it was the new one.

Minori's and new husband look great/happy in the pics.

Yerac, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:53 (six years ago) link

Do the producers of the show prod people to leave if they get boring or is it really strictly up to the person?

Yerac, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:56 (six years ago) link

Arman never leaving should answer that. :D

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:58 (six years ago) link

(when the jokes aren't being lost in translation)

One of my favourite things is when the jokes and references are completely opaque. I like not getting the joke.

When they talk about Guy and the rice ball...it was amazing.

I loved Arman.

what's the status of homosexuality in Japan? an equivalent show in the UK would definitely have homosexual or bisexual participants. to be honest I find the gay element in UK TV now to be too much, especially in soap operas and reality shows. I am actually interested by the lack of them, it's a relief.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Friday, 16 March 2018 02:46 (six years ago) link

i could just google that but i feel like i wouldn't be particularly enlightened.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Friday, 16 March 2018 02:50 (six years ago) link

Perfectly countered.

I did like Arman eventually, he was just coasting by doing nothing significantly entertaining for months and didn't have a care in the world about it. It's always perfect when the presenters get up in arms about providing free accommodation for someone who isn't pulling their weight.

tangenttangent, Friday, 16 March 2018 19:48 (six years ago) link

The thing about Arman's edit that was perhaps unfair to him was that when Arman was leaving LocoMart (the gardening center in Kamakura) the honcho said that he was the hardest working TH member who'd ever worked for him. The panel who'd been giving him a hard time took back all the things they said about him being a slacker as it recast him in a different light coming from a successful business leader (with good reason, the crew probably couldn't make the trip from HigashiGotanda to Kamakura every shift).

Arman has gone behind the camera and is doing a lot of work in video production in Hawaii and Japan. It's vague whether he's still with Martha or not.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 16 March 2018 20:21 (six years ago) link

Up to episode 7. I love that the disappointing mizutaki is still being brought up seven weeks later.

jmm, Saturday, 17 March 2018 03:23 (six years ago) link

I think around ep7 it starts to get really pretty in Karuizawa. Any scene with Tsubasa's Dad is my favorite so far.

watching both series simultaneously. arman has just joined in series 1. enjoying series 2 cast more, though yuudai is infuriating. ami was mean to him on their athletics course date tho

Yuudai should have been on Aloha State.

The most gripping and dramatic aspect to Terrace House is Tori-chan's face when the others are all being vulgar

imago, Sunday, 18 March 2018 22:36 (six years ago) link

Welp...

JFC that was the most harrowing episode ever. There's no way the rest of the house will be the same from here on out.

― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, March 30, 2020 8:50 PM (one month ago)

I just can't see the series going on from this, the whole format, the whole loss of innocence, the whole kayfabe/reality balance which was just delicate enough to begin with, now collapsing in today's social media dominated society.

One thing that gives me a little comfort is the Another Terrace (Behind The Scenes) clips from that episode where her housemates were trying to help Hana through her anger. It left me with a little more hope.

But yeah, I just can't see how the show could ever recover from this. Gah. RIP Hana.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 23 May 2020 15:09 (three years ago) link

well, the show was about to wrap for an undetermined amount of time anyway...

re: kai stans - if i were to guess, there’s probably a healthy bit of toxic guys that didn’t like a strong, forceful woman in the mix too

this is all so sad

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Saturday, 23 May 2020 15:42 (three years ago) link

Yeah, sorry for not being clear, I mean like the entirety of the Terrace House franchise will not be able to recover from this.

If you compare the Hana x Kai drama to an early conflict: Misaki & Natsumi in BGitC. It was revealed that the producers/editors made a conscious decision to edit their fight off the show, because it was so ugly and it could possibly have an effect on both talent's careers.

But then Aloha State happened which led to the combination of Cheri/Wez/Taishi that the producers/editors allowed us to view pure toxicity.

But the Kai x Hana episode was just soooo terrible on all sides, just a bitter stain that would be unlikely to wash away. What was once marketed as a boring, innocent, or however else the show was targeted to the West... that show is long gone.

Oh well, I strongly recommend people hunting down BGND, I feel like that was the pure essence of the franchise, where things were less contrived.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 23 May 2020 18:13 (three years ago) link

Without having seen the other seasons except BGND, I agree this casts doubt on the premise of the show being a good idea

Vinnie, Sunday, 24 May 2020 00:43 (three years ago) link

Apparently Cheri is full-on QAnon, probably not a huge surprise but she's off the rails.

Through all the times we've shared I have felt sadness and love, but my feelings have not changed. I want us to be together forever. In the place we met, where the feelings began, I asked you here. If you will, please marry me.

S: Really?
