i think the dark blue was a weird choice. they're so close to black that it looks like a mistake.

Oh, mine are black, they just have a really weird shape and are too big (although I guess the size is related to how good they sound). It's fine though bc I never walk around with headphones and I'm only going to use my beaters in the gym.

I guess it's cliche, but it's really true about how much more DETAIL you can hear in the music. One of the first things I put on was Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard, and I was able to hear stuff I never heard before like Coltrane tapping his foot on the stage to count off a tune, or, at one point, a very faint ring of a telephone inside the club.

I also put on a recording of a Bach harpsichord concerto where the harpsichord previously always sounded a little buried in the mix to me and suddenly I could hear everything.

What's better, the cheapest Philips or the cheapest Sennheiser?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 26 May 2018 08:25 (five years ago) link

Philips appear to have stopped doing their cheap over-ear model, so I might just go Sennheiser.

Just got these red Sony headphones bigger style. Sound is amazing and they were 60 bucks

apparently it was only a one-day sale but I snagged the Sony XB950N1 headphones for less than half price

they have the not-as-good noise cancellation compared to the active kind on the top end models, and I doubt I’ll ever use the bass boost much as the default profile has great bass reproduction for headphones, but at around $120 they were a steal and I could see comfortably wearing them for the entire work day

anyone else have sony active noise cancellers

gabbnebulous (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 December 2018 22:04 (five years ago) link

i had a pair of sennheiser (?) noise cancellers once, i guess sometimes on the bus it was effective to turn on the thingy, but the whole idea of shooting extra noise in there just didn't sit right with me

after another pair of otherwise quite trustworthy shure SE215s started coming apart at the housing (where the peg for the earbud tip meets the rest of the unit, seems to be a design flaw with them) after long-term heavy use i decided to give up on them and try something new

i think both of these were mentioned somewhere on this thread or the other one:

went back to big headphones for outside-the-home use for the first time in forever, a pair of beyerdynamics custom streets (the ones with the physically adjustable switch on the ear units to let more air in / out). they're a bit bassier and muddier than i have been used to but they work nicely, and it's a good change of pace. it's a bit more fatiguing to use them than my shures, but i think they're easier on my hearing, so that's an acceptable tradeoff/up.

also picked up a pair of KZ ATE earbuds as backup / for lighter traveling days, since they were super cheap at < $15, and they have turned out respectably. cord is a bit wiggly as advertised, and i'm not quite happy with the seal i can get on the tips, but it's fine enough that i'm not concerned to fuss with it.

j., Thursday, 27 December 2018 22:29 (five years ago) link

incidentally, the KZ ATEs have a design that is quite similar to the shure SE215s, except that they lack the sculpted wiring/cord for hanging them over the outer ear (the cord is designed to be looped that way, it's just not as effective). but the post for the tips is replaced by a much thicker cylindrical extrusion that seems to be continuous with the design of the main unit, so that there's no attachment medium (something plasticy that turns rubbery or gummy with exposure / heat on the shures) to fall apart.

Massdrop is doing the Sennheiser 650xx (or whatever they’re called) for 199 again. I have them and they are awesome.

How the Sennheisers fare with an iPhone? Got some Hifiman hps from massdrop but they really needed more powerful amplification than my phone could provide

I’ve heard some say you need a separate amp but for me they’re more than fine. Maybe they’d sound even better with an amp but they’re already a massive leap above my old Sonys (which themselves were not bad at all). Keep in mind they’re open back so they’re not gonna stand up to a noisy environment.

I would suggest using an amp with the them

тпсбlack (Spottie), Monday, 31 December 2018 17:24 (five years ago) link

Do you have a rec for a portable DAC/amp? I do most of my listening walking around the house/doing chores so it just needs to be small and comfortable enough for that kind of activity.

The Dragonfly is great and small (thumb drive size) but you'll need an adapter for the phone I think (which I think is available from AudioQueSt)

brimstead, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 04:36 (five years ago) link

Actually scratch that idk if the dragonfly is an amp too,

brimstead, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 04:37 (five years ago) link

It is a preamp/headphone amp too.

I just use an amp. I have the FiiO E12 Mont Blanc and love it. Think it’s discontinued now tho.

Can anyone recommend bluetooth headphones for exercise that actually stay lodged in yr damn ears? I've had to resort to over-the-ears ones to fix this but as you can imagine, it's far from an ideal solution.

I won a pair of these in a competition recently, I've heard decent things, I'll report back when I get them.

Cirrus Soundkey DAC/amp is a bit cheaper than a Dragonfly, a touch smaller, and sounds great. And it comes with both Apple and Android cables too.

my mother-in-law just got me a pair of bose quietcomfort 35 II. Kinda excited to try them out as i've been using throwaway and iphone headphones for probably twenty years now. First high-end option! Anybody got an opinion on these?

I love mine. They are comfortable enough to wear for hours and hours, and the noise cancellation is great. I've sat next to screaming babies on flights and barely noticed. The sound is pretty good too.

DJI, Thursday, 3 January 2019 16:10 (five years ago) link

cool man; vote of confidence makes me happy as the lovely lil' ol' lady who bought these for me isn't very tech savvy but just wanted to get me a nice gift. i didn't have any input in choosing the brand/make/model and was worried she maybe overpaid for nothing. maybe somebody put a good word in her ear.
i've been, more out of necessity, a guy who doesn't care much about quality headphones my whole life but i borrowed a pair of the sony noise canceling ones for a bit and was surprised at the color that leapt into some music that i had been listening to for years.

The bose noise cancellation is top-notch. I find the sound of the qc 35 ok but not as good as the sound-true in ear which i usually use when i do not fly. The service of bose was very good too before, they were pretty generous in the past. But when my last qc 35 which i had hardly used broke down (one channel died and the problem was not in the cable) after a little more than two years they just wanted to give me a reduction of 50 euros, later i got the qc25 for 150 euros which also have good noise cancellation.

After you test your cool new phones put the iphone earbuds in. It really makes you appreciate good cans.

Congrats! The field is a lot more crowded than it was a couple of years ago but Bose QC35 (I or II) still sets the standard for wireless noise-canceling headphones. Plenty of competitors do this or that differently and you might ultimately prefer a different flavor for whatever reason, but you can't really do better. Just different.

- industry-standard noise cancellation
- well-regarded for sound, with a generally neutral presentation
- lightweight, compact, easily packable
- good battery life

Coupla notes:
- no wireless noise-cancelling set is going to compete with wired cans for sound quality
- if you're willing to mess around with settings in an app, people tend to rate the Sony tops overall for audio
- i've found i'm personally willing to trade some noise cancellation for a little less eardrum pressure - some people notice this and some don't so it's very much horses for courses

sony wh1000-mx match the bose for nc but the app is fluff, youd turn it back to factory settings within ten mins ime

after a test run, they're lovely. very easy on the ears, which makes a big difference and the sound is great. it's a whole new world!

Airpods

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 00:21 (five years ago) link

I just put them in and they automatically sync to the phone. The most magical product I’ve ever used.

I wound up ordering myself a Dragonfly Black -- the cheaper of the two models (I read that it did 90% of what the red one does and the red one isn't really necessary for most uses).

I've only used it with my laptop so far and definitely notice an improvement in definition and detail. Stupidly failed to realize I would need a lightning to FEMALE usb adapter to use it with the iPhone, so still waiting for that to arrive. Surprisingly hard to find on Amazon so I ordered it from Apple -- the camera adapter seems to be the one.

Bose Quiet Comfort are basically changing the way i listen to music on the street; they're kinda miraculous.

I gotta get comfy w the idea that it’s unlikely someone will rip off my fancy Bluetooth over the ears before I go traipsing through the streets w them.

My Fiio E17K ("Alpen 2") portable headphone amp isn't working properly anymore, and I'm looking for a replacement, but it seems to be kinda hard to find a replacement with same qualities, so I thought I'd ask here if anyone can recommend anything? Basically, I'm looking for a portable amp that meets these criteria:

* Besides the mini-USB input, it needs to have a regular 3,5 mm "line in" input (since I'll be connecting it to my Fiio FLAC player).
* The price should be around 100 euros (or less).
* You should be able to adjust the levels of bass and treble.

The third option seems to be the most problematic, as Fiio has discontinued the E17K, and their newer models in this price range don't have proper bass and treble controls, just a switch to turn the bass boost on or off, which seems much more blunt. And the same seems to apply to competing headphone amps in the 100 euro price range, all the alternatives I've checked on Amazon merely have a bass boost switch.

Looking for a pair of lightweight in-ear (not over-ear) wireless headphones, any recommendations?

i bought a pair of rha trueconnects a couple of weeks ago, been pretty happy with them so far

seven months pass...

has anyone else had any experience ordering headphones or accessories directly from sennheiser.com? I ordered a replacement cable from them on December 26, but it hasn't arrived yet, and the only correspondence I've received is the initial email confirming that my order was placed. I called their customer service number on Saturday, and all the service rep could tell me was that the order is "in process" and that the item hasn't shipped yet. she has no idea where it will be shipping from or how long I can expect the shipping/delivery process to take. she promised that I'd be getting an email update within 48 hours, but I haven't gotten a response as of tonight, so I called back and was told that it would be placed "on higher priority"

apparently all of sennheiser.com's online transactions are conducted by a company called Digital River, which has an abysmal track record wrt customer service

if I had more sense I'd probably just buy new headphones. I paid maybe $45 for my HD 497s over 10 years ago, and I've had to replace the cable just about every year because one of the channels eventually fails. I'm not sure whether this is a common problem with replacement cables or whether this model is particularly flimsy (or maybe I abuse them more than I realize?). I used to buy the cables from B&H Photo, but their price has shot up over the past couple years, so it really isn't worth it at this point
