Yeah, step one is being informed. I just feel pulled to this kind of struggle. The struggle could have been against England way back in the day. It could have been the civil-rights struggle. There have always been oppressive governmental systems but there’s a new form of that happening now and people need to step up. But to go back to your question about how I go about what I do: My mission is the same as it’s been from day one, which is to try to make something that has artistic value and bring it to the mainstream. Nothing about that has changed. I strive to build a world where the Velvet Underground would be more popular than the Rolling Stones. Or where Ariel Pink is as popular as Ed Sheeran.

fun fact: julian casablancas is thirty-nine earth years old

Apparently a commenter is miffed that Marchese challenged Casablancas.

I don’t blame corporations for anything. I blame the laws. It’s like if there were no laws against murder and then there were roving pirate-gangs of murderers, I wouldn’t say the problem is the pirate-gangs, I would say the problem is the lack of laws. The mystery to me is that the business world somehow is allowed to be a lawless place where decisions are made that destroy people’s lives, but if you did those things person-to-person you’d be put in jail.

rly makes u think, if only there was some explanation for a legal system which allows corporations to act like roving pirate gangs

Let go of your conditioning.

Essentially I’m disappointed so far in the internet.

Same tbh

Google Atheist (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 12 March 2018 14:41 (six years ago) link

At least he didn't mention crisis actors or go down the Mandela Effect/Flat Earth/Pizzagate rabbit hole. Give it time i guess..

piscesx, Monday, 12 March 2018 14:53 (six years ago) link

in a way i guess it's kinda sweet that julian is unleashing these banal, vaguely confused takes on the workings of the world like he's moses bopping down mt sinai to lay some real shit on us sinners

in another, more accurate way: god what a dumbass

See? This is the cost of sobriety.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 March 2018 15:06 (six years ago) link

So, who was the one-eyed man in this company?

Mark G, Monday, 12 March 2018 15:41 (six years ago) link

See? This is the cost of sobriety.

i was gonna say, this is likely either the result of a lot of cocaine or not enough cocaine

"He didn't have hits" is p close to accurate, tbf, assuming that refers to singles.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 12 March 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

he had 4 top ten hit singles in the uk, including a no.1 (posthumous)

mark s, Monday, 12 March 2018 16:01 (six years ago) link

but apart from that,

Mark G, Monday, 12 March 2018 16:04 (six years ago) link

he had 4 top ten hit singles in the uk, including a no.1 (posthumous)

Ha, well, until now, I didn't know that either (or had forgotten it) tbf!

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 12 March 2018 16:12 (six years ago) link

to be equally fair, you're also not confidently trotting out misunderstandings of jimi hendrix's career in support of a maturing worldview which would seem painfully callow to people half your age

this is an instant classic

Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Monday, 12 March 2018 16:17 (six years ago) link

And that was the New York City Cops, and their new single "Julian Casablancas.. "

Mark G, Monday, 12 March 2018 16:38 (six years ago) link

a shame Casablancas has such faith in capitalism, otherwise he might find a way to accept his favorite artists not as commercially succesful as others

anyway since "art is objective" what does it even matter

^ Julian and Kim Jong Un, eh

one is the chinless offspring of a distant, successful father who has ascended to international visibility as a tyrannical leader despite obvious educational deficiencies and the other is kim jong-un

this is an unboring interview & as an ilxor i enjoy this type of nonsense

ogmor, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 11:50 (six years ago) link

That interview scans as either the last one he did after a weekend of hundreds of them, or the first one he did before he's even had a cup of coffee. What are Bobby Gillespie interviews like?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 11:51 (six years ago) link

tom d to thread to answer that one

strange logic is many execrable Boabby G interviews somehow making this Julian Casablancas effort beyond ridicule.

calzino, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 12:21 (six years ago) link

he's been reading Howard Zinn and that's probably about all we need to know

stuck on the darraghmac (qiqing), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 20:43 (six years ago) link

A world where Ariel Pink is as popular as Ed Sheeran is a zero-sum game

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 20:45 (six years ago) link

i am v happy to not live in a world where the velvet underground are more popular than the rolling stones

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 20:55 (six years ago) link

otm. for me that would be a nightmare. because you can't just have more popularity free of any real world impacts of that success. and that'll be that. the band would be different. the music would be different. it would no longer be the band we know.

does this mean there is new material? does it suck? there would have to enough new material to support a popular (touring) band for 3 decades. we could say the members cannibalized this universe's solo material for VU albums but there is a possibility they won't be writing any of the same songs our VU members have written. would we not have any Lou Reed/John Cale/Nico solo albums? or just less of them? does this mean Lou Reed never makes a "Transformer" solo album, recording "Perfect Day" together with David Bowie? being in a big successful band is physically and mentally exhausting. their material and performance in general may lack the wiry energy we know and love.

what if Mo Tucker/Nico/John Cale/Lou Reed leaves the band anyways and you have the post-Lou Reed Velvet Underground being the one everyone loves? and you are the jerk saying only their first 4 albums were good, that would be quite ironic. i wonder if in that universe there is a Julian saying the exact same thing he said in this one.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 22:54 (six years ago) link

he meant to say he wants to live in a world where Ed Sheeran is about as popular as Ariel Pink

had (crüt), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 22:56 (six years ago) link

I really can't believe purportedly intelligent men -- always men -- over thirty still have this implicit disdain over phantom popular forces that kept this or that favorite band from triumphing. Unless you're Reed, Chilton, or Pink, who the hell cares?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 22:58 (six years ago) link

Earth-2 Julian never started a band, b/c he was too busy going to VU stadium concerts and tracking down elusive mint copies of the Stones' (only) four albums.

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 22:58 (six years ago) link

on what planet of opium must you live on to imagine that City of Night would top the NYT best seller list for months?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 22:59 (six years ago) link

yeah, alfred otm, also VU is not in any need of attention

I guess if you look at it very idealistically it is conceivable that there are currently overlooked artists whose style could be hugely influential in a way that would push popular music towards a completely new sound

if so, it's probably not Ariel Pink

Glaswegian and completely incomprehensible. No way is Boab as dense as this guy btw.

mebbes, but i'd say boab is a markedly more entertaining kind of dense - the smacked-out postgrad to julian's stoned undergrad perhaps

Boaby ahem, escuseme..

Bobby is more a performance eejit at times. Like back in his "Bomb the Pentagon" days, he'd just as likely to eventually say ".. Obviously not really!"

Whereas J is a more sincere kinda dude..

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 14:03 (six years ago) link

I'm probably over-compensating vis a vis Boaby because I've spent so much time rippin' the pish oot the cunt, albeit in a spirit of fun.
