Voting Pass the Dutchie, but under what possible taxonomy is that a new wave song?
― enochroot, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link
reggae leaning songs were played on new wave stations

"Favorite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" is my fav on here.
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:35 (six years ago) link
also pass the dutchie was a big mtv hit! and musical youth were in the video for donna summer’s “unconditional love” too
― maura, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 13:56 (six years ago) link
I agree with all that, still don't buy "Pass the Dutchie" as new wave, even as elastic as the term was back then. But then, my favorite song on here, then and now, is a straightforward cover of a Little Willie John R&B song from 1960, so...
Still have a soft spot for Joe King, but voting for Trio.

well these comps seemed to be very informed by the wlir/kroq aesthetic and “pass the dutchie” was a shriek of the week...http://www.advancedspecialties.net/wlir.htm

I’m with Bee, that whole H100 record is solid (picked up a Nick Heyward solo record just last week).

"Pass the Dutchie" obv. isn't new wave, unlike Paul Carrack, for instance.
― Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 14:41 (six years ago) link
lol yes, but Paul was in Squeeze, who were "new" and were not REO Speedwagon. And his album cover was colorful. It's all a rich tapestry.

Oh if I'd seen this I'd have been tempted to vote Bill Nelson as that track has been a minor latter-day revelation. Terrific proto-techno production, sounds like Neuropolitique or something. Check the extended mix.

He was always such an awkward "rock star". It's good that he's ploughed his own field for so long, even if I lost interest yonks ago.
