Think i'm going to vote for Da Da Da over Pass the Dutchie (with O Superman being disqualified for being such a different beast than all of this).

Don't know many of these at all.

Musical Youth/Trio/Fleshtones - I've probably heard the Bad Manners and X songs but those titles don't ring a bell at all.

idk, I can imagine someone who e.g. has a sentimental affection for Party Weekend but still doesn't think it's as awesome as O Superman

I'm regularly baffled by statements of 'xyz band was all over MTV' and then xyz is a band I've never even heard of, or never saw a video for. Yet I considered myself pretty much an MTV addict from about 1983 through 1990 - though with slightly less access from 88 onward due to college... Joe King Carrasco? And 6 of these bands I've honestly never heard of, and I worked in a record shop in the late 80s! (Maybe that just speaks to me being a bit clueless.)

I've gotta vote Bill Nelson - loooove that era of his stuff,. He gets lots of play still on my radio show.

voted Trio. the song is huge and massively influential. the 99cent casio beat hits this aesthetic that is just everywhere now. love that song. its so futuristic yet DIY! like im looking at that thumbnail and this could almost be Stereo Total.

I agree with all that, still don't buy "Pass the Dutchie" as new wave, even as elastic as the term was back then. But then, my favorite song on here, then and now, is a straightforward cover of a Little Willie John R&B song from 1960, so...

Still have a soft spot for Joe King, but voting for Trio.

"Pass the Dutchie" obv. isn't new wave, unlike Paul Carrack, for instance.

lol yes, but Paul was in Squeeze, who were "new" and were not REO Speedwagon. And his album cover was colorful. It's all a rich tapestry.

Oh if I'd seen this I'd have been tempted to vote Bill Nelson as that track has been a minor latter-day revelation. Terrific proto-techno production, sounds like Neuropolitique or something. Check the extended mix.
