Paul Carrack I Need You 4EVA!!!!!!

kornrulez6969, Friday, 9 March 2018 22:57 (six years ago) link

As these comps go, this one is fairly subpar

kornrulez6969, Friday, 9 March 2018 23:01 (six years ago) link

yeah half these songs aren't new wave at all wtf

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 9 March 2018 23:18 (six years ago) link

No worries I peaked ahead and some heavy hitters are coming up. Volume 9 is a doozy

kornrulez6969, Friday, 9 March 2018 23:19 (six years ago) link

Voted for the Blasters. But this is bound to be a very lopsided poll.

that's not my post, Friday, 9 March 2018 23:26 (six years ago) link

Bill Nelson

campreverb, Friday, 9 March 2018 23:31 (six years ago) link

Get a load of this fucking frat rock.

The science of writing songs about parties has come so far since then.

how's life, Friday, 9 March 2018 23:44 (six years ago) link

Think i'm going to vote for Da Da Da over Pass the Dutchie (with O Superman being disqualified for being such a different beast than all of this).

how's life, Friday, 9 March 2018 23:49 (six years ago) link

Don't know many of these at all.

Musical Youth/Trio/Fleshtones - I've probably heard the Bad Manners and X songs but those titles don't ring a bell at all.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 9 March 2018 23:51 (six years ago) link

Voting Pass The Dutchie

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 10 March 2018 00:10 (six years ago) link

Get a load of this fucking frat rock.

Joe King Carrasco is good. I remember when he was played on MTV all the time.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 10 March 2018 00:49 (six years ago) link

I guess this is as good a time as any to confess my hatred of "Da Da Da."

Dangleballs and the Ballerina (cryptosicko), Saturday, 10 March 2018 02:06 (six years ago) link

Is the question "which of these songs is most awesome," "which of these songs is your favorite," "which of these songs is the most New Wavey" or "which, of the New Wave songs here, is most awesome?"

those might all be different answers

I leprecan't even. (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 10 March 2018 02:16 (six years ago) link

The first two.

Dangleballs and the Ballerina (cryptosicko), Saturday, 10 March 2018 02:18 (six years ago) link

Yeah, the Blasters not so New Wave but yes on the first two of those Qs

that's not my post, Saturday, 10 March 2018 02:25 (six years ago) link

I cannot explain the depth of my love for Bill Nelson's 70s and 80s work, so him.

But X's "Blue Spark" is all-time. That whole "Bluuuuuuue SPARK!" chorus kills me.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 10 March 2018 04:29 (six years ago) link

Chicken Outlaw purely because it's got Slang Teacher on the B-Side

groovypanda, Saturday, 10 March 2018 07:08 (six years ago) link

Da Da Da slightly ahead of Pass the Dutchie and O Superman.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Saturday, 10 March 2018 10:02 (six years ago) link

Is the question "which of these songs is most awesome," "which of these songs is your favorite,"

how is this two questions? They're the same question.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 10 March 2018 12:08 (six years ago) link

idk, I can imagine someone who e.g. has a sentimental affection for Party Weekend but still doesn't think it's as awesome as O Superman

soref, Saturday, 10 March 2018 12:59 (six years ago) link

favorite line in O SUPERMAN by laurie anderson vs favorite line in PARTY WEEKEND by joe "king" carrasco & the crowns

it's a party

it's a party party

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 10 March 2018 13:53 (six years ago) link

I'm regularly baffled by statements of 'xyz band was all over MTV' and then xyz is a band I've never even heard of, or never saw a video for. Yet I considered myself pretty much an MTV addict from about 1983 through 1990 - though with slightly less access from 88 onward due to college... Joe King Carrasco? And 6 of these bands I've honestly never heard of, and I worked in a record shop in the late 80s! (Maybe that just speaks to me being a bit clueless.)

I've gotta vote Bill Nelson - loooove that era of his stuff,. He gets lots of play still on my radio show.

christopher.ivan, Saturday, 10 March 2018 13:58 (six years ago) link

Maybe you should have been watching in 1982

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ndTPah0YK20

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 10 March 2018 14:03 (six years ago) link

In the mid-1980s, Joe moved to Nicaragua and his songs turned more political as they addressed the political climate of Central America.

imagining an album full of songs that all start with an intro that sounds exactly like the beginning of Party Weekend then "Ah said uh-hey little girl [SOME LYRICS ABOUT THE SANDINISTAS]"

soref, Saturday, 10 March 2018 14:12 (six years ago) link

C Ivan - what's your radio show?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 11 March 2018 03:02 (six years ago) link

Carrasco was on mtv loads. Probably never ever after 1984 or so though?

mr.raffles, Sunday, 11 March 2018 05:34 (six years ago) link

I do 2 hours of mostly new wave & synth-pop (70s to now) every Sunday morning on a low power FM station in Rochester, NY. The show is called "Are Friends Electric?" of course... here's a word cloud of the stuff I played in 2017 - bigger = more airtime. Tune in here if that's your thing... https://wayofm.org/shows/are-friends-electric

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 11 March 2018 12:47 (six years ago) link

voted Trio. the song is huge and massively influential. the 99cent casio beat hits this aesthetic that is just everywhere now. love that song. its so futuristic yet DIY! like im looking at that thumbnail and this could almost be Stereo Total.

Voting Pass the Dutchie, but under what possible taxonomy is that a new wave song?

enochroot, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link

reggae leaning songs were played on new wave stations

maura, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:44 (six years ago) link

"Favorite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" is my fav on here.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:35 (six years ago) link

also pass the dutchie was a big mtv hit! and musical youth were in the video for donna summer’s “unconditional love” too

maura, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 13:56 (six years ago) link

I agree with all that, still don't buy "Pass the Dutchie" as new wave, even as elastic as the term was back then. But then, my favorite song on here, then and now, is a straightforward cover of a Little Willie John R&B song from 1960, so...

Still have a soft spot for Joe King, but voting for Trio.

No energy, only great chaos (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 14:12 (six years ago) link

well these comps seemed to be very informed by the wlir/kroq aesthetic and “pass the dutchie” was a shriek of the week...

maura, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 14:20 (six years ago) link

neat to see the evolution of those picks btw. prob too many choices for a poll but maybe year by year...

maura, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 14:21 (six years ago) link

Holy crap my lir roots are almost directly to that moment but i didnt remember that as a screamer at all

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 14:26 (six years ago) link

I’m with Bee, that whole H100 record is solid (picked up a Nick Heyward solo record just last week).

by the light of the burning Citroën, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 14:39 (six years ago) link

"Pass the Dutchie" obv. isn't new wave, unlike Paul Carrack, for instance.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 14:41 (six years ago) link

lol yes, but Paul was in Squeeze, who were "new" and were not REO Speedwagon. And his album cover was colorful. It's all a rich tapestry.

Volume 8

Dangleballs and the Ballerina (cryptosicko), Saturday, 17 March 2018 00:33 (six years ago) link

Oh if I'd seen this I'd have been tempted to vote Bill Nelson as that track has been a minor latter-day revelation. Terrific proto-techno production, sounds like Neuropolitique or something. Check the extended mix.

He was always such an awkward "rock star". It's good that he's ploughed his own field for so long, even if I lost interest yonks ago.
