Felipe Rivero has changed his name to Felipe Vázquez
The Pirates closer's jersey will reflect his new legal name sometime soon

btw current playoff odds are at 17.1%! too bad they can't play the tigers and reds all the time

offensive juggernaut

mookieproof, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 20:36 (six years ago) link

ok so what is up with this team

Karl Malone, Friday, 13 April 2018 02:15 (six years ago) link

hitting way over their heads, have played like 1.25 decent teams out of four

the pitching is still near the bottom of the league overall, and while trevor williams seems like a good guy, being 3-0 with a 1.56 ERA is a bit much

mookieproof, Friday, 13 April 2018 02:25 (six years ago) link

you could listen to Mookie’s rational take or you could believe like me that Moran’s .911 OPS will be sustained for the whole season.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 13 April 2018 02:28 (six years ago) link

i want to believe! they're a fun team, i think. also it's fun when they beat the cubs, so

Karl Malone, Friday, 13 April 2018 02:52 (six years ago) link

every team is fun when they're hitting .278/.353/.479 (including pitchers!)

mookieproof, Friday, 13 April 2018 17:44 (six years ago) link

What is worse in life, to have your team have a terrible start and then rise to mediocre baseball or having them get to a good start and then slide slowly back to mediocre baseball?

earlnash, Friday, 13 April 2018 22:02 (six years ago) link

the latter results in several more wins at the end of the season! which is good if the team barely squeaks into the playoffs, and for attendance. and bad in terms of the draft pick at the end of the season.

Karl Malone, Friday, 13 April 2018 22:57 (six years ago) link

the latter results in two weeks of excitement! so that's cool

and in the pirates' specific case, it earns them some goodwill the franchise desperately needs (but doesn't really deserve) after an ugly offseason

mookieproof, Friday, 13 April 2018 23:16 (six years ago) link

rip first place

mookieproof, Saturday, 21 April 2018 23:36 (five years ago) link

I’m sure the young man upset at himself for missing the Moran home-run ball will see worse defense from a Tiger by the time he leaves the stadium.

Andy K, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link

Third baseman Jung Ho Kang has been granted a work visa to re-enter the United States and will rejoin the Pirates in the coming days.

Kang, 31, has not played for the club since being convicted of a third drunk-driving offense in South Korea in January 2017. Without a work visa, he was unable to play for the Pirates last season.

It’s not immediately clear how long it will take Kang to get in game shape or when he could be placed on the active roster.

wau

mookieproof, Thursday, 26 April 2018 19:33 (five years ago) link

Kang ended up missing the entire 2017 season. He did play briefly in the Dominican Winter League recently, but that stint was cut short when he failed to perform with his new team.

what does "failed to perform" mean?

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 April 2018 21:39 (five years ago) link

he hit .143/.219/.202 in 24 games

i imagine conditions are difficult for korean players in the dominican winter league, but

mookieproof, Friday, 27 April 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

i mean, that's not THAT bad, sheesh. right now adam duvall is hitting .159/.247/.329 in 24 games. ok, i guess that's pretty bad

gotta love these throwback uniforms. the google image search for "Pirates Tekulve Baseball" is so good.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 29 April 2018 17:44 (five years ago) link

the unis are great but the throwback hats are terrible -- instead of wearing the real stovepipe caps they've just put lines around regular-style caps ugh

tbh the 1971-style uniforms they wore on sundays a few years ago were actually classic; these are just 'fun'

cutch returns : /

mookieproof, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

The pirates are good

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Thursday, 17 May 2018 02:43 (five years ago) link

they've done very well against bad teams and okay against good teams; i guess that's all one can ask

stealing corey dickerson from an even more egregiously cheap team was a nice move!

mookieproof, Thursday, 17 May 2018 03:10 (five years ago) link

and then they dropped three straight at home to the padres

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 June 2018 18:20 (five years ago) link

probably not, but it's pretty cool! he's been up for two weeks and already has more homers than the very disappointing first baseman

mookieproof, Sunday, 3 June 2018 21:46 (five years ago) link

hey, look who's .500

4-13 since you typed this . . . thank's

mookieproof, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 03:15 (five years ago) link

iirc you weren’t enthusiastic enough about how good they were, causing them to tailspin

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 8 June 2018 16:35 (five years ago) link

god help any team whose record is based on my enthusiasm

mookieproof, Friday, 8 June 2018 16:43 (five years ago) link

three errors in the first inning = five unearned runs = never reaching .500 again

mookieproof, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 02:52 (five years ago) link

two weeks pass...

in two games at known launching pad dodger stadium, the pirates have been outscored 25-4 and outhomered 10-2

mookieproof, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 20:11 (five years ago) link

played five games in july

allowed 53 runs

mookieproof, Saturday, 7 July 2018 20:00 (five years ago) link

two weeks pass...

well look who's over .500

at least we don't have to worry about the team making bad trades in an effort to compete, because lol
