excited to check it

i was surprised that i wasn't much into the dj earl album because in general i really like his production and dj'ing (particularly the jungle / dnb influence he brings)

the late great, Monday, 5 March 2018 19:17 (six years ago) link

also got quickly bored of the dj manny

hate to say it but i feel like footwork really peaked about 4 years ago

i'm still listening to footwork buuuuuut aside from jlin not much i think that reaches the heights of "double cup" or "legacy"

On the other hand, if this is real...

whoaaaaa

the late great, Monday, 5 March 2018 19:27 (six years ago) link

wasn't the thing w/ Nate that he drifted away from footwork really soon after the first collection came out and started doing relatively straight rap productions instead?

He invented Bop!

Frederik B, Monday, 5 March 2018 20:28 (six years ago) link

Yeah, he was doing auto-tune singing and it was still kinda crazy but a world away from the footwork stuff.

chief keef invented bop tbf
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5lRW_eS8KI

tbf Gucci Goggles came out before Ballin. But I don't know who invented what, all I know is that I kinda miss the sound :( Super Saiyan vol 1 is one of the underrated mixtapes of the decade.

not according to the time stamps on these videos. and sicko mobb / every bop artist will tell you they were inspired to start rapping by keef, 'ballin' was the biggest keef song on the west side

It feels really awkward for me arguing this with a chicagoan, and my comment that dj nate invented bop was meant tongue in cheek, but the flexx washington mixtape came out in august, and ballin came out in september, no?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 11:15 (six years ago) link

the date on the 'ballin' youtube i posted was may. it was getting played out all summer

i just think it’s funny that you popped into a footwork thread to street team for chief keef

It’s like a metaphor for what happened to footwork irl

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 19:50 (six years ago) link

how so

the late great, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 19:57 (six years ago) link

artists like say dj nate stopped making footwork to make keef type records

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:34 (six years ago) link

most hip hop producers i talk to in chicago had a point where they were making juke & footwork stuff tbh

i see

the late great, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:43 (six years ago) link

nobody listens to techno :(

the late great, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:43 (six years ago) link

I'm sure most rap producers in Chicago have dabbled in footwork/juke, but out of the ones that really made their name on it, I can't think of any others (besides DJ Nate) who abandoned it?

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 23:00 (six years ago) link

not the same thing at all but i heard taye raps on his new one?

the late great, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 23:01 (six years ago) link

some of them used to do it primarily but i'm sure veering to rap was specifically bc they hadn't made their names as dance producers

im not saying the culture is gone at all, i know ppl who still do it, just that the rap gold rush def shifted some of the zeitgeist away for awhile

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 23:47 (six years ago) link

That makes sense.

Re: the DJ Taye record, all the DJ Paypal collabs are the highlights imo.

Whoops meant to post in this thread

If you didn’t go to parties at The Rink, House of Kicks, Dolton Expo, Markham Skating Rink, 5th City, Paul Hall or the Route then you wouldn’t understand this thread...

Nice. I didn't hear any of this until post-Bangs & Works, but I love hearing this era of tracks.

Recently thought of it when hearing this Scratch DVA track (takes the same rhythm and slows it down 30bpm, I'm sure it's referencing this music)

1) DJ Nate returns to footwork!

2) His rise was slowed after he was paralysed from the neck down two years ago...

!

3) ...an accident which he’s recently recovered from.

It's not my business but I have so many medical questions based on that press release (mostly because my partner is a PT and I hear about this stuff a lot). Like, clearly he wasn't literally 'paralyzed from the neck down' since he was making beats and doing physical therapy?

But whatever, hoping for the best for him.

DJ Nigga Fox just dropped an LP and it's about as good as his EPs in my layman's estimation.
