skot you might want to check out the new Payroll Giovanni and Cardo - Big Bossin Vol 2, it's kind a nice modern take on older midwest/west stuff

they had masta ace and krs play last year. they got mr. lif coming too but mr. lif does not fit the parameters of this thread. he might have had a couple of turn of the century singles...

scott seward, Friday, 2 March 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link

masta ace has done some good music in recent years - the falling season was this autobiographical story album, really good

Does anyone remember the Punk Barbarians? They appeared briefly on Public Enemy's Muse-Sick-N-Hour Mess-Age (itself a very underrated album) and got a co-sign from Chuck D. They only released one album and some singles, but they did a music video for 'Hooptie Car' and that got some rotation on BET's Rap City (which is how I discovered that they had even released any of their own music). The album was really good, for a no-nonsense NYC hip hop record from 1996. A must for fans of classic MPC-crafted beats with mellow jazz samples.

Another more closely Public Enemy-related group that was also pretty good was Hyenas in the Desert. Their album came out on Chuck D's Slam Jamz label. The beats were a lot more weird, as Gary G-Wiz was more heavily involved in the production. Another case of one album, a couple singles, and nothing else. The main guy from Hyenas also featured on Chuck D's solo, if anybody remembers that.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 05:06 (six years ago) link

I remember the name Hyenas in the Desert, but never heard a note of their music.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 12:55 (six years ago) link

I have (or had) a Hyenas in the Desert 12 inch at one point I'll try to keep an eye out. you can have it if I can find it. I think it's pretty cool iirc

hip hop is interesting when you think about it, it's always evolved so relentlessly (cfe imagine playing Future or Migos to someone from 20 years ago) but also it was almost instantly nostalgic and looking back to its past (cfe songs like "Goin' Way Back" by Just-Ice is from 87!)

or like bringing back "real hip hop" the idea that hip hop betrayed its roots is present almost from the beginning - even literally the first hip hop hit record (Rapper's Delight) is a betrayal of hip hop (the stealing of Caz's routines by some pizza shop nobodies for a shady R&B label)

1996 westcoastgangsta album i'd never heard before today. digging it. it rides low. i don't really listen to a TON of westcoast stuff like this. when i'm in the mood i usually put on my double-CD nate dogg g-funk classics set. that's a pretty undiluted shot of cali when i need it. anyway, the one and only Kinfolk album is worth hearing.

can't view any youtube at work, but will check this thread tonight. Can say I've been all about 90s hip hop this month, with Showbiz & AG, Kool G Rap & 3-6 Mafia getting a lot of play.

Ghostface was fun last night! He looked great. Packed house. Everyone in the crowd was happy. I'm sure there were people who thought he wasn't on long enough. it's basically an hour long greatest hits set. but it was fine by me.

Matt Dike wasn't a member of the Dust Brothers btw, Capitol just didn't want to credit three entities on the Paul's sleeve
