there's a sort of wild psychedelic freedom hidden in this music that i'm absolutely barmy for. like at their best they could be among the foremost exponents of the american wpf, just like the boredoms are for japanese, julian cope for english, faust for german etc idk what even is freedom

the wpf/corny bar-band line is narrow, though

tylerw of aerosmith, ljagger of the stones, it's an easy mistake to make imo

if a band now emulated the sound of those early ozric tentacles tapes of shaggy krautrock/hawkwind stuff they would totally be beloved by the hep brooklyn weed crowd.

in imago.xls, Evan is and will always be 'the Swirlies guy', which actually puts you in very good stead with me tbh

imago, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 16:46 (six years ago) link

Ship of Fools reminds me of some of my favourite tracks by The Band, though much longer and terrible.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 16:48 (six years ago) link

I don't mind being the Swirlies guy at all! Discovering them was an awakening for me.

Evan, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 16:51 (six years ago) link

Swirley to rise

i think a key turning point for me is the moment an old thread comes up on something you have an opinion on, you log in to post your opinion, and then you discover you posted the exact same opinion in that exact same thread three years ago. that's offputting.

another phenomena that's probably related is the way people talk hagiographically now about certain albums or movies that you can remember discussing live on here when they first came out. i dunno, it felt really weird to see the chromatics poll the other day. sorry!

, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

i grow old, i grow old, the albums of my youth are now being polled

, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

that's why u should rotate yr opinions every 2-3 years, prevents embarrassing dbl posts

sleepingbag, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

I have some food in my bag for you, not that edible food, the food you eat? No. I have some food for thought. It's called ILX.

btw deems I elected not to say "lads" to a black woman who disliked having young English men repeatedly tell her that wearing blackface to a party was funny

Haribo Hancock (sic), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 20:22 (six years ago) link

I respect yr position

britisher 45 dealer in my store right now who once promoted an angelic upstarts show near sheffield. should ask him to join ILX? y/n

scott seward, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 21:53 (six years ago) link

yes!

It's not delivery, it's Adorno! (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:00 (six years ago) link

The landlord of a local pub apparently roadied for the Upstarts amongst others (I assume Big Audio Dynamite since he's got loads of posters of them on the walls). He's got Peter & The Test Tube Babies, Charlie Harper of the UK Subs and John Otway to play gigs there in the last year or so. I don't actually go out drinking locally because I don't know anyone here but I could ask him to join ILX next time they have some ancient creaking punks play at his pub.

As my opinions can often change or almost certainly refine on certain issues ilx has proved to be almost a diary that keeps a log on my thinking - mostly on certain films, music or books.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:07 (six years ago) link

surely the correct approach is to quote your entire earlier post and add "otm"

mh, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:07 (six years ago) link

Yeah but I want Mordy to hate me in other ways so.
