I don’t even know wtf is going on this this extremely messy thread but 40xps it would be rad if mordy posted on ilh

Clay, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 07:14 (six years ago) link

there is a veneer of civility that gives way to some pretty heinous behaviour at times

like if you are asking why ppl leave as if you havent seen it happen in real time then bless yr naivety i guess idk

ppl leave ilx bcz ppl are dicks

lol i don't know who anyone is anymore.

like lamp, i haven't entirely quit ilx, but i spend much less time here than i used to. for me, there were three factors:

1) career demands; less time to get wrapped up in trivial message-board conversations during the workday.

2) twitter became the default internet thing for me to obsessively check throughout the day. when i posted here more, i would refresh site new answers a lot, just hoping that there was a new post to read. on twitter, there is always a new post to read, and it's much easier to dip in and out of. there's also, of course, the potential for attention outside the bubble of ilx, which was a big part of the initial attraction.

3) chicago ilxors migrated to a different corner of the internet. this was kind of the final nail in the coffin for me. if i was reading nothing else on ilx, i would check into the chicago thread to commiserate with my irl pals. without that, ilx felt less essential.

having said that, i do miss the feeling of ~community~ that i got from this place for so long. i haven't really found a substitute for that. (weirdly, i feel like the size of the community was important: it was big enough to be dynamic and unpredictable, but small enough that i recognized most people and felt like we knew each other.)

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 07:50 (six years ago) link

I would like to invite roxy and JBR and tehresa and tokyo rosemary and some others back to more regular ILX posting but i also can understand that maybe they all left for reasons that also included wanting to break free from habitual posting on a website.

Wait hold on, I posted JBR's reasons upthread and it had nothing to do with this.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 08:34 (six years ago) link

I know five ppl that left because there wasn't enough racism and mansplaining tru story

Bully Corgan (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 09:40 (six years ago) link

I imagine I will get called out for abusing mod powers to blow up a dude's spot, but I feel like this is relevant to the thread. The other day, someone I believe to be former ilx poster 'and what' registered under a new screen name, flagged this post, and has been laying low since.

how's life, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 11:50 (six years ago) link

that's cute if so

however I don't think that should be something you reveal

i would imagine it's possible to guess based on IP addresses or emails used to sign up but anybody using a proxy would probably not be obvious

3) chicago ilxors migrated to a different corner of the internet.

ye olde DC ILX posse from a decade ago mostly just migrated. I hope everyone is doing well and drinking less.

treeship 2, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 12:27 (six years ago) link

imago: because of a mods obligation to privacy regarding the fps or because I somehow scotched his triumphant return?

treesh: sometimes, not always. xps, mostly what noodle vague said.

how's life, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 12:28 (six years ago) link

Many xposts but lamp I was always a fan of your posts as well

Lockhorn. Lockhorn breed-uh (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 12:49 (six years ago) link

I'd have no problem divulging my FPs (and often follow them up with a post directed at the FP-ee), but I guess I can understand people objecting to mods revealing the Ps they've F-ed.

Here Comes The Brain Event (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 12:57 (six years ago) link

I also love Lamp.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 13:06 (six years ago) link

xps: Yeah, I normally keep quiet about who FP'd which post, but if a former poster re-regs in the midst of a heated discussion about where all the former posters from the good ol' days went and then flags his own offensive post from ten years ago...

how's life, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 13:11 (six years ago) link

I think it's cuet and am glad you shared it. If a person fp's himself and no-one's around to witness it has the p been f'ed etc

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 13:13 (six years ago) link

People have the right to F their own P in private and, if they so choose, they can at a later date release a video to the public of their auto-FP sesh.

I’m not sure any part of this thread has reached heated status imo. Here is my capsule review.

I have a strong general animus to anything that reeks of nostalgia but there have been one or two digressions that were sort of edifying. Also y’all are some mopey fucks.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 13:24 (six years ago) link

"idea: if you're a male and you want to increase the ratio of men-women on ilx but you don't want to invite women to come post maybe just stop posting yourself that'll help the ratio w/ a minimal amount of effort on yr part

can't we just go transgender instead?

"Real talk here: I feel like Branwell and LJ have been the most shat upon posters in the 9 years I've been posting here.

this but unironically, unless someone uses their real name I probably have no idea who they are

― algorithm is a dancer (katherine)"

yeah i've never met any of you folks and it took me years to start being able to tell you apart. raggett and whiney spent years blurred together in my head. similarly tylerw and imago. it's only now that the board is "dying" that i can recognize anybody here as individuals!

ziggy the ginhead (rushomancy), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 14:34 (six years ago) link

tylerw and imago?!?! In fact, anyone and imago?!?!

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 14:36 (six years ago) link

Ragget G. Nedgarten

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 14:38 (six years ago) link

Yeah, there are a few dozen posters who stand out as distinct entities in my mind but without the presence of, like, faces and voices and other distinguishing features beyond passages of text on a blank white screen, the identities of a lot of other people here are an unfortunate blur for me.

Lol at confusing Ned and Whiney, tho.

Here Comes The Brain Event (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 14:40 (six years ago) link

For those still confused, Ned is the one without a strongly-stated position on bronies.

Here Comes The Brain Event (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 14:40 (six years ago) link

Let's not (or let's) just throw about who has or hasn't been the receipt of the most shit without any ref to their actual behaviour like

Bully Corgan (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 14:46 (six years ago) link

Nothing unfortunate about that blur tbh. It highlights the hivemindy-ness of this place.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 14:46 (six years ago) link

Many xps I know JBR's reasons for leaving but "maybe they all left for reasons that also included wanting to break free from habitual posting on a website."

re: the issue of "nicey-nice" ilx - like anyone who spent any amount of time on usenet, i've got a lot of experience slinging invective. i like it, in fact - in the same way that i like drinking. 2018 ilx appeals to me because it's encouraged me to moderate unhealthy personal habits.

ziggy the ginhead (rushomancy), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 15:02 (six years ago) link

I'm half asshole on my dad's side, so I always appreciate environments that discourage indulgence in that unfortunate heritage.

Yeah. that...um. You sure wouldn't think that if you were saw us together in person. (And I have met him the once.)
