Is it just me or is Dominic West's English accent getting better?

ok, I've been obsessed with Graham Nash's Innocent Eyes music video from 1986 this week. This won't be the last time I bring it up on ilx either. And I might be wrong about this, but the actor playing the boy here - is that Carcetti? Especially look at his facial expression around 0:37.

The actor, Aidan Gillen, would have been 18 at the time. I can't find anything on his wikipedia page that would support him being in a (presumably) L.A.-based music video shoot.

☮ (peace, man), Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:27 (five years ago) link

also, he doesn't look anything like Aiden Gillen, and even looks more like the other main Queer As Folk dudes

https://contentforyoublog.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/queer-as-folk-biography-nathan-maloney-charlie-hunnam3.jpg

Sonja Sohn is great in High Flying Bird, though

steven, soda jerk (sic), Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:34 (five years ago) link

I dunno. Maybe it was just the beady eyes and cheekbones. But he displays a couple of Carcetti-like (and even Littlefinger-like) facial expressions. Especially in those first 40 seconds during the living room sequence. The hair's obviously different, but it was the 80s and people did all kinds of shit with hair. I've never seen Queer as Folk, but I don't think he looks remotely like either of those two other dudes.

And you're probably right that it's not him, but I'd watched the video a few dozen times and every time his face came up, I was like "who the fuck is that?" And suddenly something about the look he gives around 0:37 really said Carcetti to me.

☮ (peace, man), Thursday, 14 February 2019 20:09 (five years ago) link

I didn’t watch the whole thing, just skipped to 0:37 tbh

steven, soda jerk (sic), Thursday, 14 February 2019 20:41 (five years ago) link

Carcetti is Irish? That's almost more surprising than Stringer or McNutty being British.

Has Dominic West as Jean Valjean been deliberately ignored? Thought it was a BBC flagship production thing.

Stevolende, Friday, 15 February 2019 09:54 (five years ago) link

I believe the intent of this thread was to highlight Wire actors popping up unexpectedly in older stuff

Not noting that fairly famous actor Dominic West is still working

Clarke Peters rocking a not entirely unconvincing English accent in His Dark Materials.

chap, Tuesday, 5 November 2019 15:01 (four years ago) link

Peters actually lived in London in the 70s and 80s, and in 1986 played a pretty despicable (but mostly silent!) pimp in Neil Jordan’s Bob Hoskins-classic Mona Lisa

I just saw Wendel Pierce as Willy Loman on the West End stage in London - in a production that did nothing to change my opinion on the hokey 'Why you I oughta' qualities of that particular play and of stage acting in general. Still it was either that or pay 70 friggin' quid to watch West Ham play Leicester City.

I think "mark s finally watches the wire" deserves its own thread

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 1 January 2020 16:34 (four years ago) link

Wendel Pierce also in a rather hopeless role as Alfre Woodard's husband in Clemency, but for a change it's good to see a male actor in the supportive/anguished spouse role.
