Why do people leave ILX for good?

I didn't realize that they changed the display name properties so you can't just change it completely without the parentheses showing up.

as someone who does the least possible to maintain whatever social media accounts i have, i find other forms of online interaction are typically more prescriptive about how much you have to engage with them and i appreciate that ilx has a pretty free-moving sliding scale, usual social impediments aside. there is an experience for ppl who want to join in and post voluminously and get involved with off board stuff, and there is an experience for ppl who want to trick their brain that they are interacting with other human beings even when they have no inclination (or aptitude) to actually do so.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:10 (six years ago) link

i'm one of the admins of a facebook group with 15,000+ members and originally i really dug it and stopped going on ILM at all but it has since devolved into beatles shit and dudes and i kinda can't stand it now. but it has been a long winter. there are ilxors there. and some who have left that group too! or stopped posting anyway. when ilx is 100% beatles shit and dudes it will be time to pull the plug.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:15 (six years ago) link

you can't compare the sniping interpersonal meanness of ilx with grand scale hate-based movements like the alt right or whatever
i don't think the current climate makes the old mean spiritedness seem gentler, it just seems like it has spread and grown tbh

"100% beatles shit" made me lol :)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 26 February 2018 22:18 (six years ago) link

the mean-spiritedness or obnoxious bantz or whatever happened here was generally between people who had an understanding of what the other person was about, even if it was the basis for grinding axes

we're not banding together to hate entire classes of people, other than shit beatles dudes

mh, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:23 (six years ago) link

Otm.

Yellow Submarine though... That 23rd take on the reissue of Bantz Records, where Ringo whistles the tune through his nose? Pretty wild.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:26 (six years ago) link

scott i'm in that group! i think i'm going to post only hip-hop CDs on there now.

omar little, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:27 (six years ago) link

Did Gaz coombes ever play with any of the beatles

Simpson L. (darraghmac), Monday, 26 February 2018 22:32 (six years ago) link

Fifth Beatle iirc

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:33 (six years ago) link

you cannot play music without -in some sense- playing with the beatles. that is a fact of rock.

Just an aside but I probably took comments more personally as a teenager when someone calling me "damaged goods" for liking an artist would get under my skin. Nowadays that probably wouldn't bother me much

There were permabans for financial fraud, forgery, following etc posters offboard, and everybody else I'm aware of getting banned (perm or temp) deserved it at the time, whether they got it together later or not.
I miss a lot of other ilxors, some of whom have died.
Twitter can be at least or at most good for informative links: I recently snagged one for a complete run of Ed Sanders' Fuck You, A Magazine Of The Arts. The Mute button is a blessed thing, for when you want to get rid of somebody without hurting their feelings---they won't know they're muted, just think you and they have lost each other in the tumblin' tweeterweeds of followers etc.. (Now, if only we could mute by subject or keyword, please Jesus.)
also totally makes sense to me that a lot of people i knew here who started writing more and more seriously and more professionally would stop typing so much somewhere for free. it takes mental energy out of you.

It's a good place to try out first drafts, loose grafs, also for procrastination of course---it takes mental energy out of you.Sometimes that's the goal!

i had written a KM-length post and scrapped it because who cares right so ill say this: last year we had a series of twin peaks threads going right through the revival series, and everyone was thoughtful and positive and nobody was a dick at any point, and the whole thing was just lovely. in 16? 17? 14? years it was easily my favourite ilx experience of all time. that epitomises what keeps me on ilx these days and it’s fucking tops imo (increasingly lopsided gender balance notwithstanding)

oh gawd, grimacing lol! i should probably learn that lesson too. but yeah i completely agree, that was an ideal way to experience the show.

maybe we should ilx achievements (like 1000 posts or You Got 51'd, Whoa) that would add some artificial heroism to the ILX experience

xpost to AA

aw shit, sorry! and what you said was totally innocuous, i don't know what my deal is lately.

things to love about ilx in the 2018th year of our lord: return of the hoos, hoops board (which has the best mod), in many ways historically most chill this place has ever been, alfred still posts here

things to not love: men (generally)

i miss the teacher homies horseshoe and abbott (altho i still see horseshoe once in a blue moon).

NBA YoungBoy named Rocky Raccoon (m bison), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 04:00 (six years ago) link

at least horseshoe still posts on occasion. abbott not posting at all sucks a lot. one of the few things i regret about ditching facebook is at least being able to see what abbott was up to there.

most consecutive bumps of a single thread w/ no comments in between would be a cool achievement. I'd probably be on the Top 10 list like five or six times

X-post I miss them both a lot.

I was gonna post about all these ilxors I miss, but I bet they’re all still posting under different display names and I haven’t figured it out yet. Love u ilx, but being able to change display names is a huge flaw.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 11:55 (six years ago) link

i was thinking about the stylesheets thing but on a little deeper level of design. it would be sick if ILX updated threads and board topics in automated ways, in a reactive manner where the user doesn't have to page refresh to see changes. i'd be stoked if the new answers were updated every minute or so, and the threads worked more like chat. mr snrub might be right about limiting display names but i'm not rlly sure how all that works. some people have, um, two names? one of which is the display name, and that changes? or both change? idk.

davey, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 12:15 (six years ago) link

The old fashioned, minimal display that stays put unless you refresh it is the best thing about this board imo.

treeship 2, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 12:18 (six years ago) link

I am also fond of it, though there's probably a few things here that I'm fonder of.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 12:44 (six years ago) link

Yes, ONE OF the best things about this board is the ability to view and post at work without giving the appearance that I'm fucking around. Turning images off helps immensely in that regard.

the more boring and stripped down and static it looks the better, for many of us, for this reason.

Simon H., Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:09 (six years ago) link

I suspect that people have not been leaving ilx at a higher rate than they did 5/10/15 years ago, the issue is that there's no fresh blood because 20 y/os don't know what message boards are

iatee, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:09 (six years ago) link

The more boring and stripped down and static it looks, the more it keeps morons and assholes from signing up.

Lockhorn. Lockhorn breed-uh (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:20 (six years ago) link

if you guys miss those women posters so much, you should personally invite them back! encourage them to return!
the alternative is to go back to facebook. where most of them are active.
lamenting their absence over and over is futile

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:31 (six years ago) link

xp: Every time I mention message boards in front of my 14-year-old, he repeats the words back to me with sarcarstic implied quotes: "message boards..."

how's life, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:40 (six years ago) link

Sometimes I think about encouraging friends to post, maybe try to increase the number of women but mostly to get new interesting people here. But then I realize I don’t want them reading through my posting history....which isn’t tol bad, but maybe too candid

treeship 2, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:49 (six years ago) link

the funny thing about people talking about the death of message boards that reddit is basically just forums/mbs with a goofy upvoting mechanism

I beg him to post regularly again but he just doesn't have the ilx bug anymore I guess. Only shows up occasionally these days.
