Why do people leave ILX for good?

* wrote this on zing and it wouldn't post and by the time I got to keyboard, where I was up to was lost in the fold. one thing doesn't change: ilx loves talking about itself.

If there were, say, a French equivalent to ILX (please point me in the right direction if you're aware of one, thx), I'd probably feel less inclined to spend time here. The Anglocentrism (in the broad sense) is kind of stifling sometimes, down to the overemphasis on ID politics.

Geir said last year in the ilx now playing group that he was thinking of delurking on ilx to post again.

I still remember when he turned up after being an ilx bogeyman initially and tom had to post verifying it was really him when he did arrive

This is exactly what I'm talking about. For structural reasons, it's probably not as apparent if you live in the US/UK/Anglo Canada, etc.

(I had checked by the time I posted, and the last post for one username was March 2014, with the previous username stopping in November 2005, but I dunno if they had another more recently)

I'm kind of amazed sometimes how many people from ilx I've been fortunate to meet either by chance or design

then there's the near misses, like the realization I probably used to walk past the currently-screen-named JCLC in the grocery store all the time before I posted here

re: facebook diaspora - I am happy to return to an ad-free, grassrootsy, weird, non commercial environment

Facebook is a tool of the wicked, but we must do what we can with it since so many of us are trapped there

The weird thing is that gr80 has also now collectively met my entire immediate family aside from my mom, as well as meeting my girlfriend, and every time it's been outside of California.

I only really post intermittently and during polls (especially the metal poll which is always lovely). I start to get really depressed if I spend too long here, which is in part due to my own irrational paranoia but also has a lot to do with how quickly some posters seem to spring to a hostile response. I feel like this level of conflict is unprecedented...I mean, not on the internet of course, but I want ILX to be a haven from all of that. And the conflict is part of the fun, but not when it’s so frequent and really hurtfully personal.

Also it really upsets me how some of you speak to and about imago! Living with him, I think he is just really quite different to how he gets portrayed here sometimes... I know he’s part of creating that perception too of course, but I think the extent of the response is sometimes incongruous with what’s been said, just because it’s imago. Obviously all posters should be held accountable for bullshit or offensive things but the level of aggression is quite high where he is concerned.

I would say this is right-but-wrong - a lot of the rest of the web became either less boys-only, or far more so. ILX stayed more or less where it is, but leaking women. But ILX is rarely the only site that anyone goes to, so if other sites have better balances (and are aware of them) then so it goes.

Probably worth revisiting jbr's last posts here, tbh.
