Possibly 2 posters given I haven't seen someone else post since that incident but could just be coincidence xps

yeah Sparrow! you emailed me a download. i should show it to my w1fe, might be a good HK gateway drug, then she'll be into Bunman and Red to Kill before i know it.

tbh I am amazed anyone from ilx interacts with me on twitter. I realized after doing some cleanup that apparently I only respond to people on there in a really haphazard way, or after a few drinks

sorry to everyone who's still here who got weird misspelled or incoherent messages on that site. I'm going to do better. not on ilx, though.

is brad really gone xp? i may be done with ILM if brad is done

yeah brad bounced iirc after being treated very shabbily by a regular

tbph i don't think brad left bc of that interaction. i mean maybe he did but it would be weird if a drive-by by a known troll and provocateur on one thread drove him off the rest of the site. maybe he's using it as an excuse to take a break in which case more power to him.

i think for me, after 16+ years of reading and posting, i have really internalized a lot of the ILM / ILE discourse, to the point where i can generally predict what type of replies i will get if i post a thing or say a thing. so i'm content to sit back and not post, or maybe just to let other post it for me. because the other side of it is that a lot of what i have to say isn't that original anyway and not very interesting to many people. this is especially true on ILM. i like what i like and i have certain attitudes about music that i thnk are familiar to me and not that productive to endlessly rehash.

the late great, Monday, 26 February 2018 19:26 (six years ago) link

familiar to ILM i mean, not familiar to me

the late great, Monday, 26 February 2018 19:27 (six years ago) link

I feel that way sometimes, other times I hear some music that I should have known about and find out no one's ever mentioned it on ilm outside of voting for it in a year end poll!

What I like most about ILX is that it’s basically a better version of mid-90s Usenet, somewhat anonymous, pretty consistent group of intelligent/eloquent regulars with good discussions, no upvotes or other shit that makes discussions into popularity contests, no avatars, no emojis, no bots, but also no gigantic unmoderated flamewars. Most of the internet is an unadulterated shitstorm in terms of discussions, especially Twitter. I’m not going to maintain a second anonymous Facebook identity for online discussions, too much work.

I read daily, post occasionally. I’ve been here since 2001, probably will never leave, still don’t feel like I’m truly part of it all as a non-Anglospheric dude.

I don’t want to play the role of tonedeaf overearnest Scandinavian/Dutch/Swiss/German curiosity but I guess I am that guy once in a while.

It was a direct descendant of 90s alt.music.alternative in a way.

Geir said last year in the ilx now playing group that he was thinking of delurking on ilx to post again.

I still remember when he turned up after being an ilx bogeyman initially and tom had to post verifying it was really him when he did arrive

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 26 February 2018 19:41 (six years ago) link

I like the low amount of beef on ILX these days bcz I don't have time to keep up with it. *

Strongly miss the volume of female posters generally, and specific voices like JBR/JBL and Jenny and c# who've exodused in recent years; especially JBL as it was openly due to toxicity rather than busy life changes. It's :-/ that the more congenial atmosphere these days is largely being enjoyed by middle-aged white str8 dudes.

deems: one had to stop browsing at work and switch to zing, found it harder, "now I'm over a year behind and can't catch up"; the other claimed to still post, but I haven't seen them do so for years. (tbh I see 2-6 ex-posters a week IRL who still read threads to some degree)

* wrote this on zing and it wouldn't post and by the time I got to keyboard, where I was up to was lost in the fold. one thing doesn't change: ilx loves talking about itself.

Haribo Hancock (sic), Monday, 26 February 2018 19:45 (six years ago) link

imo the best approach instead of catching up is removing all bookmarks and starting fresh

mh, Monday, 26 February 2018 19:46 (six years ago) link

If there were, say, a French equivalent to ILX (please point me in the right direction if you're aware of one, thx), I'd probably feel less inclined to spend time here. The Anglocentrism (in the broad sense) is kind of stifling sometimes, down to the overemphasis on ID politics.

pomenitul, Monday, 26 February 2018 19:47 (six years ago) link

ilx declined when I stopped lurking and started posting regularly

correlation is not causation :-)

the other claimed to still post, but I haven't seen them do so for years

overemphasis on ID politics lol

This is exactly what I'm talking about. For structural reasons, it's probably not as apparent if you live in the US/UK/Anglo Canada, etc.

pomenitul, Monday, 26 February 2018 19:50 (six years ago) link

surprised how many people here seem to know each other IRL. I spent a few hours with a fellow ILXor and it was a seriously surreal experience. especially since most of the conversation was about how the stars consistently kept aligning to integrate Ned Raggett into this guy's life

I'm kind of amazed sometimes how many people from ilx I've been fortunate to meet either by chance or design

then there's the near misses, like the realization I probably used to walk past the currently-screen-named JCLC in the grocery store all the time before I posted here

re: facebook diaspora - I am happy to return to an ad-free, grassrootsy, weird, non commercial environment

Facebook is a tool of the wicked, but we must do what we can with it since so many of us are trapped there

I still can't believe the one time years and years back when I was at LACMA visiting with a then-fairly-recently-arrived UK friend (non-ILX) and we were walking around in a courtyard and I heard a 'hello there' or the like right behind me and I turned around and it was gabbneb.
