Why do people leave ILX for good?

i like the current era of ILX a lot, which is kind of a lonely position. it's different than older eras, but still in a good way. it's smaller, but i also feel like i recognize most people and have a rough idea of where they're coming from on any given thread. i enjoy my messageboard community.

to address the OP, at least some people leave because they're just trying to leave the internet in general. that was the case with me, twice. i failed miserably both times, and immediately came back. but during those times, i would start to see the internet/ILX as a place that i've invested so much time and energy into at the expense of real life, like a zero sum game. so i'd freak out and try to cut myself off to force myself to be a normal human being in the real world. that dichotomy is baloney, though.

i might be alone in that as well, though. i think what barreras described above is probably the more likely explanation for the general attenuation of the board:

overly simplistic maybe but this could all be that old ilxors are now 18 years older and more likely to have families, kids, etc and are too busy to regularly post here. nothing on the internet is expected to last 20 years anyway, so ilx still being here is a minor miracle

xposts There was no overt beefing on my part, inasmuch as my interactions with said poster were limited to saying 'hey, dude I never interact with and have no desire to interact with, stop evoking my name in threads whose entire purpose is to rank on other posters'.

I'm with you, KM. This is my favorite era of ILX. People don't have to agree or even get along but the general diffusion of outright antagonism these days is a relief.

Yeah my inkling about OL is true

The guy was an incredible poster and a one-off but he could, it's true, be a little spiteful

KM and OL OTM.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:30 (six years ago) link

i think i worked it out

Ah, maybe it isn't who I'm thinking of then! Pretty sure it's someone else now.

i know what you're saying, but i don't buy this. i think likes/upvotes/quantifying response can be toxic to both the discussion and the self. i would rather know someone is engaging with someone i said by seeing what i said quoted and responded to. that's how you know you are part of the conversation :) voting/liking is not conversationally equivalent to body language imo.

Yeah I'm not exactly arguing in support of it, but I see some value in that system when the feature isn't abused (and that's rare of course). It is a shame though to watch your big thoughtful post drift off to sea then wait all day in the widow's walk hoping for some kind of acknowledgement, perhaps even a juicy OTM!

Oh cankles!

Far be it from me to note that you have to know how seriously to take some ppl I mean that's a dangerous comment to make I know but I mean

Cankles!

not a lonely position. i'm right there with you on that.

And look.

Look

I got time for my guy frogbs indeed I think I was a lot more light-hearted on him at the time than many posters posting itt tbh

But frogbs cmon man do you even remember how you hit this place at the start

Guys let's not utterly rewrite it all!

a relatively lonely position on this thread, at least, as i scan through it! but yeah, there must be a lot of people who agree. otherwise, why come here all the time (other than habit or to resolve one last beef before leaving in triumph)

As long as you are not trying to invert Maslow's Pyramid your 'real life' is probably fine. Some people here would mock the idea, but ILX encourages and stimulates the intellect. You can't make a whole life out of that, but after you've satisfied certain other more-basic needs, ILX provides an agora for the agoraphobic.

x-post - lol yeah I remember hating and giving Frogbs shit for something years ago and although I can't remember the particulars I do remember that it was something pretty misogynistic. I think. My point is that I think it was rare for someone to get shit if they didn't at least sort of deserve it in some way. I'm not advocating bullying by any means but I do miss some of the more lighthearted ribbing that used to go on.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

frogbs a poster who really came into his own after surviving the haze imo

xpost loving 'an agora for the agoraphobic'! A+

Simpson L. (darraghmac), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

My wife says "you're always reading your blue boxes" but I think she's starting to understand the conversations here are more substantive than what might be typical of an "internet message board" to the disengaged. It's addicting but it's not the junk food that is browsing most social media.

Evan, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:42 (six years ago) link

yes @ frogbs becoming a valuable poster @ poker w/ d34thdr0ne xp

good times

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:42 (six years ago) link

xp I miss a lot of the heavy-hearted ribbing but I don't expect to win votes with that sentiment

Simpson L. (darraghmac), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:42 (six years ago) link

it's a cool club tbh - people who showed up, irritated the entire forum and then hung around until they were part of the furniture. each one a victory for the corrective powers of the zing

And ok "deserve" was probably a poor choice there word wise. Yes, some people def took it pretty far but I guess I just don't remember any sort of mean spiritedness that ever seemed completely unprovoked.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:44 (six years ago) link

ILX provides an agora for the agoraphobic.

oh, for sure. i've come around to that. it's amazing to be able to bump a relatively minor topic (like the raspberry pi thread) with a handful of weird questions about a project, and then get really thoughtful advice soon afterward from people that i know, and that i know will still be there in a few weeks and might be interested in how the project is coming along.

i remember the corned beef of my childhood (Karl Malone), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

My first OP was an inadvertent duplicate thread for Mad Men season 4 which enraged lag8n and he image bombed my thread, so a mod locked his thread in response

Now we’re best buds

man i wish jbr would come back

Lockhorn. Lockhorn breed-uh (Jon not Jon), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

FTR, I'm not so thin-skinned that I can't deal with ribbing or criticism. sleeve, eg, has been vocal about his lack of appreciation for my Trump posts but I have no beef with sleeve even though I can't understand why anyone would ever object to anything I've ever posted because it's all kind of amazing tbh.

Ages ago, I wrote what was easily my most vitriolic post on the board in response to a shitty attack post by someone I subsequently spent ages thinking was a total dick and who I now think is a pretty cool dude and poster. ILX clearly demonstrates that bridges can be mended if one posts from a place of openness and love. Namaste.

Same and otm.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:55 (six years ago) link

yeah, that's happened to me more than once too. and a lot of the times it goes the other way, too, where i was being a complete dick to someone for no reason and then gradually realized that the other person was a human being who was actually really interesting

i remember the corned beef of my childhood (Karl Malone), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:57 (six years ago) link

I still hate everyone I ever hated ftr.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 26 February 2018 18:02 (six years ago) link

my posting has slowed down a lot, or it feels like it has. i peaked years ago! i don't really have much to talk about on here these days nor much to contribute. i'm not disinterested, but i'm beginning to feel like i want to hang on for one last big poll and then get out. like a heist movie. except I'm heisting music recommendations.

omar little, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:02 (six years ago) link

lots of the posters i was pals with back in the day i don't really talk to anymore, but that's maybe bc I'm not one who's ever met anyone IRL (except JBR for about a minute, and she's great!)

omar little, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:04 (six years ago) link

I do believe that every ILXor I've met IRL has been gone from the board for a decade+ at this point.

dear god, why does ilx happen to good people?

there's people you thought left years ago but are still around in a new username that everyone but me knows who it is

02-03 were fun years for me

w/r/t recruitment, i have done my part by both speaking with people in person and virtually

have successfully gotten a handful of people on board but they all give me the same feedback

also i think these are good but different times

people get nostalgic for the past or for what can't be had
