why did turangalila quit? I can't remember now. And did he come back?

I don't ever like people being dicks about other people unless those other people have really done something to deserve it, think I'm probably not alone in this, but it's difficult to forcibly stand up for wishy washy opinions even if they are obviously right.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:07 (six years ago) link

The only thing beneficial about likes and upvotes is knowing someone read your post? ILX is full of little essays followed by responses to other posts or new little essays. Upvotes or likes compensate for the fact that you can't pick up on normal face to face conversation visual or audio cues. You have to see someone respond to a point nested in your essay to find out whether you're even part of the discussion.

kv_nol bailed during lunagate, but not before attempting to give me the ol "what for" in an email.

omar little, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:10 (six years ago) link

yea I stopped posting for a while because of that person too. he'd literally tell other posters to get raped and die over the most innocuous shit and most of ILX would just be like "aww, hope you work past your mental issues *hugs*"

I had this experience! I did get an apology eventually though. Wonder if it's the same person.

it's possible i know who Old Lunch is talking about too but idk.

omar little, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:11 (six years ago) link

I forget, was Lunagate that she wasn't who she was in her posted pics???

i know what you're saying, but i don't buy this. i think likes/upvotes/quantifying response can be toxic to both the discussion and the self. i would rather know someone is engaging with someone i said by seeing what i said quoted and responded to. that's how you know you are part of the conversation :) voting/liking is not conversationally equivalent to body language imo.

yerac, yes but it was much more than that. the main lunagate thread is worth reading when you have a few hours.

oops
with someone should be someTHING not one
woops

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:16 (six years ago) link

Nah, I kind of remember when it was going on, but I wasn't that invested in it at the time either.

Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:16 (six years ago) link

i mean i guess it is also kind of boring placed in the wider world of 'weird online grifter shit'. At the time I was glued to my fuckin' desk though

Lockhorn. Lockhorn breed-uh (Jon not Jon), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:17 (six years ago) link

i can't believe it's been over ten years since Lunagate

omar little, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:18 (six years ago) link

For some reason I thought she still posted here?

Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:18 (six years ago) link

Based on what I know and what I've inferred, I cannot imagine that Luna would be at all welcome around these parts.

he's fine but says hes no intentions of coming back. He's on FB though.

I know who imago refers to but no idea with old lunch

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:21 (six years ago) link

Oh wait, did Luna end up being a man? Ha, maybe I should go and re-read the threads.

Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:21 (six years ago) link

I do suggest a re-read instead of rehashing it all here tbh

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:22 (six years ago) link

Ah right, I think I know who frogbs is talking about.

Strike that, I meant the person OL is talking about, have no idea who frogbs is talking out. This is hard work.

i like the current era of ILX a lot, which is kind of a lonely position. it's different than older eras, but still in a good way. it's smaller, but i also feel like i recognize most people and have a rough idea of where they're coming from on any given thread. i enjoy my messageboard community.

to address the OP, at least some people leave because they're just trying to leave the internet in general. that was the case with me, twice. i failed miserably both times, and immediately came back. but during those times, i would start to see the internet/ILX as a place that i've invested so much time and energy into at the expense of real life, like a zero sum game. so i'd freak out and try to cut myself off to force myself to be a normal human being in the real world. that dichotomy is baloney, though.

i might be alone in that as well, though. i think what barreras described above is probably the more likely explanation for the general attenuation of the board:

overly simplistic maybe but this could all be that old ilxors are now 18 years older and more likely to have families, kids, etc and are too busy to regularly post here. nothing on the internet is expected to last 20 years anyway, so ilx still being here is a minor miracle

i remember the corned beef of my childhood (Karl Malone), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

xposts There was no overt beefing on my part, inasmuch as my interactions with said poster were limited to saying 'hey, dude I never interact with and have no desire to interact with, stop evoking my name in threads whose entire purpose is to rank on other posters'.

Here Comes The Brain Event (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:27 (six years ago) link

I'm with you, KM. This is my favorite era of ILX. People don't have to agree or even get along but the general diffusion of outright antagonism these days is a relief.

Here Comes The Brain Event (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:28 (six years ago) link

Yeah my inkling about OL is true

The guy was an incredible poster and a one-off but he could, it's true, be a little spiteful

imago, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:29 (six years ago) link

KM and OL OTM.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:30 (six years ago) link

i think i worked it out

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:31 (six years ago) link

Ah, maybe it isn't who I'm thinking of then! Pretty sure it's someone else now.

Video reach stereo bog (Tom D.), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:32 (six years ago) link

Yeah I'm not exactly arguing in support of it, but I see some value in that system when the feature isn't abused (and that's rare of course). It is a shame though to watch your big thoughtful post drift off to sea then wait all day in the widow's walk hoping for some kind of acknowledgement, perhaps even a juicy OTM!

Evan, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:33 (six years ago) link

Oh cankles!

Far be it from me to note that you have to know how seriously to take some ppl I mean that's a dangerous comment to make I know but I mean

Look

I got time for my guy frogbs indeed I think I was a lot more light-hearted on him at the time than many posters posting itt tbh

But frogbs cmon man do you even remember how you hit this place at the start

a relatively lonely position on this thread, at least, as i scan through it! but yeah, there must be a lot of people who agree. otherwise, why come here all the time (other than habit or to resolve one last beef before leaving in triumph)

As long as you are not trying to invert Maslow's Pyramid your 'real life' is probably fine. Some people here would mock the idea, but ILX encourages and stimulates the intellect. You can't make a whole life out of that, but after you've satisfied certain other more-basic needs, ILX provides an agora for the agoraphobic.

x-post - lol yeah I remember hating and giving Frogbs shit for something years ago and although I can't remember the particulars I do remember that it was something pretty misogynistic. I think. My point is that I think it was rare for someone to get shit if they didn't at least sort of deserve it in some way. I'm not advocating bullying by any means but I do miss some of the more lighthearted ribbing that used to go on.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

frogbs a poster who really came into his own after surviving the haze imo

xpost loving 'an agora for the agoraphobic'! A+

Simpson L. (darraghmac), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

My wife says "you're always reading your blue boxes" but I think she's starting to understand the conversations here are more substantive than what might be typical of an "internet message board" to the disengaged. It's addicting but it's not the junk food that is browsing most social media.

Evan, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:42 (six years ago) link

good times

it's a cool club tbh - people who showed up, irritated the entire forum and then hung around until they were part of the furniture. each one a victory for the corrective powers of the zing
