Why do people leave ILX for good?

that guy who directed horse money or w/e

lol good to know that Portugal's most famous/only criterionized director is still seen as a dude who'd totally have the time and inclination to talk to randos on ILX (probably not far wrong tbh).

Early 00's ILM was super formative to me as a young rockist wannabe rock critic, opened so many doors not just for then contemporary Hip-Hop and Chartpop but also Jazz, Techno, House, Ska. Atmosphere was far from friendly but really I cherish the beatdowns I got from jess, Blount and the like - at 18 I really needed to be told to stfu and stop thinking I was a genius.

I do miss a ton of posters but on a selfish level I feel like the brain drain from this forum makes it possible for me to post mostly w/o ridicule so...

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 26 February 2018 15:22 (six years ago) link

jess and blount were a deadly duo. they trampled the weak and hurdled the dead.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2018 15:25 (six years ago) link

i don't miss the mean-spiritedness of old ilx at all, like 0%
i do miss some of the people who have left but mostly they are on facebook or twitter if we are hungry for their thoughts. one of the best things about ilx is the lack of quantification of how many people approve of your thoughts and the democratizing bland b/w landscape. it's a huge equalizer, which some people like and i guess others don't.

Prolific women posters leaving is the most bummer ilx trend

x-post - I thought I should add that I'm glad you are still posting a lot LL because whenever I do read or post I'm glad to see you here.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 26 February 2018 15:43 (six years ago) link

I can't even imagine posting a pic on a what do you look like thread nowadays. I think a lot of people just got super private. I hung out with rjg last month and we were discussing old ilxors and what their new names are. I've been so confused about who is who.

Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

I figured the lack of WDYLLs was less because of privacy and more because many of us know what each other looks like these days because of Facebook.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 26 February 2018 15:45 (six years ago) link

FB you can at least control the audience and admin. Here you can't. I happened to be at a housewarming in London about 2 years ago and there were 5 old school London ilxors there that I had met at a fap 10 years prior. It was a trip.

Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

Yeah I guess you're right that had just never occurred to me as a major reason.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 26 February 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

xp - that's good to hear! :)
this is a great place to be if you like to discuss things (music in particular) but actually don't wish to cultivate followers or quantify how much people like your thoughts

as long as you're not posting photos of yourself or other private deets, ilx is a good place to discuss things that are not personal, which is 95% of what i am comfortable discussing in general -- both online and off.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 26 February 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

Also there's the thing where some of us who were once young and spry are now old and broken and don't care to commemorate the brutal savagery of time's passage with photographic evidence.

Here Comes The Brain Event (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 February 2018 15:54 (six years ago) link

x-post - I've found it really helpful over the years for discussing some very personal things but I'm generally pretty open with people (could probably stand to be more guarded tbh) irl too I think.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 26 February 2018 15:57 (six years ago) link

overly simplistic maybe but this could all be that old ilxors are now 18 years older and more likely to have families, kids, etc and are too busy to regularly post here. nothing on the internet is expected to last 20 years anyway, so ilx still being here is a minor miracle

barreras, Monday, 26 February 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

I remember this being worst around the time of the supposed Golden Age, though, at least the first part of it.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 26 February 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

I don't remember any mean-spiritness. Except maybe for the twoooooo weeeeeks thing.

Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 16:02 (six years ago) link

w/out really speculating on root cause ilx feels less funny, less open, less communal, and less freewheeling than it did when i really liked it here. i mostly stick to one small corner of the site at this point and hopefully the crew there stays strong and active for a long time.

The underlying lack of anonymity that so many of you seem to cherish makes this place even more alienating to a newcomer tbh. I already felt this during my first stint as a half-lurker in 2003 or so.

pomenitul, Monday, 26 February 2018 16:08 (six years ago) link

CAD otm. It is most definitely all of those things for me too.

i enjoy the challenge of hurling bon mots into the abyss day after day, with only the occasional grudging excelsior to offer a brief, bittersweet endorphin burst

what is ILX like on a phone? if its in any way not phone-friendly that might be another reason why people stick to their tweets and instacat pictures.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2018 16:17 (six years ago) link

it's super phone friendly (except that you can't search out an old thread you want to bump)

his underapprecation on this board is a scandal, it's true

One person's 'ilx got less mean' is another person's 'jesus this place suck now' I dunno if that could be of value to point out

True, some people seem to treat him as some sort of figure of fun. (xp)

Lol throughout the years i’ve always thought “do A and B, like, actually know each other irl and hang out at those fappy things or whatever theyre called”?

I dont recall ilx being super mean-spirited, but that 07 period was pretty high energy. Xp

i love j0n W irl but cmon he was mean. cutty was mean. hst3nc1l was mean.

Lockhorn. Lockhorn breed-uh (Jon not Jon), Monday, 26 February 2018 16:25 (six years ago) link

darraghmac that point has been clear to me since people started calling it the golden age
classic insider/outsider perspectives!

i remember a lot of mean spiritedness
just for one quick example, the threads where people would make fun of other people on the board were at least somewhat openly mean-spirited, at least they were imo
i used to follow them just to make sure i didn't show up. honest truth there. :-/

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 26 February 2018 16:27 (six years ago) link

I don't remember any of them being mean? But I also always thought gabbneb was fine too. He at least would buy pizza at faps for everyone.

Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 16:28 (six years ago) link

i always felt bad when people got picked on here. even if they were being jerky or obtuse. nobody has ever really picked on me here and if that was common i totally wouldn't still be here. i never understood the people who were gluttons for punishment. why they took/take abuse for so long. maybe some people just like getting yelled at.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2018 16:28 (six years ago) link

Thankfully I've only ever gotten consistent grief from one mysteriously-beloved dickhole who's since vacated the premises. It wasn't enough to make me leave but it was a fuckin' bummer and definitely curbed my posting significantly.

Here Comes The Brain Event (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 February 2018 16:32 (six years ago) link

As long as Mordy and Dr Morbius both post there will be equilibrium.

this happened to me too. where i really thought i was going for good because of one person. i couldn't take it. i did actually leave for awhile because of it.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2018 16:36 (six years ago) link

I was terrified of the "what a horribly formed 'joke'" thread because I both like to joke and can be pretty sensitive (more so in the past).

Evan, Monday, 26 February 2018 16:37 (six years ago) link

Starting to post here again after years of Facebook was really a trip because you have to lay down your thoughts without any knowledge of what the majority thinks of them beyond yr own ability to read the room. It's kinda scary but leads to way more interesting convos, also when someone does go "OTM" the endorphin rush is so much sweeter.

yea I stopped posting for a while because of that person too. he'd literally tell other posters to get raped and die over the most innocuous shit and most of ILX would just be like "aww, hope you work past your mental issues *hugs*" meanwhile I'd rack up 5,000,000 SBs because I posted about how shirtless Australian dudes were hot
