Why do people leave ILX for good?

here's my blueprint for triumph

- clandestine recruitment drive on other websites. candidates are discussed at length on 77. if they pass muster they are sent a PM on their own website simply reading 'you are ready for ilxor' like how bill bruford joined king crimson. you laugh but I actually recruited both ultros ultros-ghali and Spottie using this technique on Drowned In Sound, and I'm prepared to repeat the process on RYM and so forth
- restructuring of the boards (we can discuss this) that doesn't sacrifice the overall vibe. STRONGLY recommend separate 'I Love Politics' board for starters
- more proactive/comedy modding. it gets a bit moribund on that front these days
- 'guest artists' come and give interviews/do AMAs like on Reddit EXCEPT they're all kind of obscure/ilxor types like avalon emerson or that guy who directed horse money or w/e. if the site was run a little more like a culture blog this wouldn't be too hard to organise
- ilxor youtube channel
- some kind of social component I haven't calculated yet

basically, anything to make this place less of a waste of time for ppl, and more of an indispensable cultural nexus containing all the math, all the languages etc

I could see leaving ILX at least temporarily if I found myself in a new job which made it more difficult to toss out witty ripostes in the midst of 'doing work'. Or if I decided to devote time to being successful at something in life ever.

The world cup threads are the bright counterweight to what used to be a similarly periodic shitfest of US elections but somewhere along the way a particularly clunky comparison of trump to something something face like a melting wax ass lololol tore through the unknown materials and rules that combine to dictate the strange gravity and orbit of these event threads and now we all live in the awful US election thread universe

If I no longer loved music I would quit this place bc the discussion of most other topics I care about isn’t strong here & I don’t care about movies or tv but I do love music so I’ll be around. It seems like older people stop loving music and turn to tv and movies instead or just turn away from social life on the internet. if you leave for Twitter well then you get what you deserve.

I only come here when ILM slows down to a crawl. Like imago said, a separate 'I love (US) politics' board would make this neck of the woods more appealing (to me, at least).

It's funny but I dont think I ever looked at ILE for it's first few years of existence. Pretty sure 2003 will be when I first posted there at the earliest. I remember DG setting it up though. I miss DG but he always comes back every few years

This board got good around 2013 which is roughly around the time I started to take it seriously, as it happens.

I support LJ’s proposal and volunteer to do alumni interviews with prospective posters in the new york/new jersey region.

I haven't stopped posting but I post way less frequently than I used to and I think it really is because most of my favorite posters don't post anymore and it doesn't seem anywhere near as interesting or as funny. Also, and maybe I am wrong in thinking this, but it feels like there are far fewer women posting these days and I think that factors in somehow too.

also the whole idea of ilx as a Planned Community seems so pathetic to me, things have an organic lifecycle and if this community is heading for extinction i say embrace it

lol good to know that Portugal's most famous/only criterionized director is still seen as a dude who'd totally have the time and inclination to talk to randos on ILX (probably not far wrong tbh).

Early 00's ILM was super formative to me as a young rockist wannabe rock critic, opened so many doors not just for then contemporary Hip-Hop and Chartpop but also Jazz, Techno, House, Ska. Atmosphere was far from friendly but really I cherish the beatdowns I got from jess, Blount and the like - at 18 I really needed to be told to stfu and stop thinking I was a genius.

I do miss a ton of posters but on a selfish level I feel like the brain drain from this forum makes it possible for me to post mostly w/o ridicule so...

jess and blount were a deadly duo. they trampled the weak and hurdled the dead.

i don't miss the mean-spiritedness of old ilx at all, like 0%
i do miss some of the people who have left but mostly they are on facebook or twitter if we are hungry for their thoughts. one of the best things about ilx is the lack of quantification of how many people approve of your thoughts and the democratizing bland b/w landscape. it's a huge equalizer, which some people like and i guess others don't.

Prolific women posters leaving is the most bummer ilx trend
