i do enjoy seeing stuff from far away. as i always comment, yr roads look so narrow and hedge-y, it's cool.

here's a raw feed of my club run on a local section, before it got pretty sticky. my club is pretty select (me).

Cool. I was going to ask what you were riding but then all was revealed in the final seconds.

I’m so psyched while riding that bike because i really want to ride it on an ultra road/mtb/gravelly day later this summer- but im afraid perhaps neither of us is durable enough to complete the route. Failure to finish would require intervention by fam or friends. I cant try it alone, but not many friends think it sounds entirely fun or safe. But i get to ride that bike and daydream for now.

one month passes...

Did my six-day solo touring holiday. I had to shorten it from my original plans (because of the injury I got in March - I wasn't able to ride at all for a couple of months and then had to build up from just being able to do 10 miles at the start of June), not in terms of number of days, but in terms of how far each day, so the longest days were 66/67 miles instead of 90-something. As this is the first time I've been touring in over 25 years I made some elementary errors in the planning and I reckon I overpacked - my panniers weighed 11kg combined and the bike was nearly 12kg with the saddle bag / drinks bottle / camera etc.

I'm still editing and uploading video clips that are unlikely to be of much interest to anyone, but these are done so far:

Pretty good sprint finish from the horse. I'd like to see a rematch where Chris Anker Sørenson has to pull the cart and the horse has to ride the bike.

so beautiful, i wanna ride there. so clear of trees it is like the great plains. also, i learned they paint dirt. that was a dirt part right?

Hunt3r, Sunday, 19 August 2018 23:34 (five years ago) link

It's all roads apart from the final seconds (a cycle track next to a road and then a cobbled track through a forest to a youth hostel), though most of the roads were ridiculously narrow lanes full of grit or even grass growing down the middle, with high hedges on both sides, and constantly going either up or down 15% hills.

the salacious inaudible (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 19 August 2018 23:59 (five years ago) link

Did you just get lucky and not meet any cars? I was driving near kingswear a couple months back and I got very good at reversing.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 20 August 2018 01:02 (five years ago) link

No. The lanes are often so narrow that you can't even squeeze past an oncoming car and have to stop and climb out of the way. Driving would be a nightmare.

what they are doing is generally good not bad. riders like woods or bettiol, and even further-outliers, like morton, are inspiring successes in racing, but they also have dimensions outside cycling that are well presented and marketed.

I went on a solo exploit for like 14+ hours of bike screwing around. instead of taking lots of pics i videoed little snips to capture feels. then learned how to use imovie on my phone, padded it with my buddies band recorded on a handheld at a local, and voila a bad short. ive watched it like 20 times because i love those spaces and that sound.

So here's the thing.

You have no business riding in races like this, if your bike handling and decision making is this bad.

Oh that field of yellow flowers is cheering. Good to see. Trees aren't really even out yet here, and the fields are still pretty brown. It was a long winter and now a cool cool spring. Actually shaded roads over 2500m had small and shrinking dirty snow banks in a few places.

I did a short lap mtn lap today with lot of flat paved and dirt on my run in and run out. While I'm fatigued now, it didn't really satisfy. I am trying to just meet set time requirements and do rides.

Oooh, I forgot-- on a long ride up the foothills yesterday all the froggies were croaking so loudly 200m away in the wetlands from 2200m to 2500m, even though the reeds have little green yet. I think northern leopard frogs, but maybe chorus frogs. They reeds are just the skeletal tan remains of last year's growth. I almost stopped to walk down to them to record them. They're in there, though nightly temps up there are like 3 to 5 deg C. Daytime it's been like 15 to 20 but the sun here is v powerful/warm. It often goes from freeeeezing to blazing here very suddenly in May though.
