i like instagram! i like pictures. i don't post anything because i don't have a phone. i like seeing my friends' pictures though and nothing but the pictures. it is really good pr for the store too. much better than facebook ever was and all i do is have rufus post pictures of records.

i can't stand twitter. never liked it. always avoid it.

Oh, I know a lot of my list still post. I just have no idea who they are, and I like to read a lot of posts by unknown/different names and think, gee... I wonder if that’s X? And I don’t need to confirm it because if it’s not by X it makes me sad.

True fact tho: I hav yo post almost exclusively from my phone (typos probably make that obvious) because work owns my computer and blocks it from non-work sites... and incidentally there’s no cellular/WiFi signal at work. So posting is limited to vacations, evenings I’m not teaching, and cool-downs from the treadmill at the gym.

Love to Scots posters, to you I raise a crumb-soaked egg. And also the China ILXors, wherever you may be.

I voted other and I guess just the relative dearth of users compared to the old days and that fact that many good posters who used to post a lot no longer post is surely one of the biggest issues. I have thought about leaving for good but I come back due to, I dunno, sentimental reasons? I follow v few ilxors on social media so if I leave I'll never hear about posters here that I've *known* via this website for over a decade, would be weird. Like if imago gets hit by a bus tomorrow I'd like to be privy to that information

I'd post a lot less (ie prob never) if I only had phone access as I also find it a PITA to type.

i'd post a lot more but suspect that people get tired of my obscure aussie rules elections references rather quickly - and if you're fanging for that, check out my 17,844 tweets

xxxxpost I like slutsky a lot but I thought that tweet flopson posted was really dickish and smug.

overall I like it and I wish all you find internet posters the best.

but you know, I've always said ilx bemoaning the downfall of ilx is ilx's greatest tradition.

to the point where now, for example, the era flopson views as the glory days was at the time viewed as a decline from ilx's golden age.

what do you expect, it was a tweet

tweeting about quitting ILX is on a plane of ridiculousness I hadn’t really conceived of before (sorry Ronan)

to the point where now, for example, the era flopson views as the glory days was at the time viewed as a decline from ilx's golden age.

yeah but us golden agers were wrong about that then is the thing imo. the olden olden greenspun days threads -- I don't think I can be the only back-when dude who sees them now and goes "wow y'all need an editor." some influx of young cats who'd got online younger (cats who nb could also be total dicks a lot of the time & really hounded the people they didn't like imo & that was toxic as shit so there's that too) circa 07ish improved posting generally just by the speed of their game - the general tenor of the internet/social media also has a lot to do w/this mind but I think during that time ilx was learning to think of itself differently and consequently there were big lols to be had.

I think the periods when I've got the most from ilx are ≈ 01-03 (when it felt like a real community of people with fascinating new ideas, even if most of it seems ridiculous in retrospect) and the last few years (when I've been getting the most satisfying music recommendations).

The one way in which that slutsky tweet is wrong: twitter can attract the same sorts of ppl as ILX -- ok that depends on which twitter you follow -- nevertheless I often think this or that person would've been perfect for ILX except twitter got in the way of them ending up here.

I've never been on FB (lol def not Linkedin) but I don't get that impression.

the writing and editing of posts improved when I joined imo

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 February 2018 13:53 (six years ago) link

here's my blueprint for triumph

- clandestine recruitment drive on other websites. candidates are discussed at length on 77. if they pass muster they are sent a PM on their own website simply reading 'you are ready for ilxor' like how bill bruford joined king crimson. you laugh but I actually recruited both ultros ultros-ghali and Spottie using this technique on Drowned In Sound, and I'm prepared to repeat the process on RYM and so forth
- restructuring of the boards (we can discuss this) that doesn't sacrifice the overall vibe. STRONGLY recommend separate 'I Love Politics' board for starters
- more proactive/comedy modding. it gets a bit moribund on that front these days
- 'guest artists' come and give interviews/do AMAs like on Reddit EXCEPT they're all kind of obscure/ilxor types like avalon emerson or that guy who directed horse money or w/e. if the site was run a little more like a culture blog this wouldn't be too hard to organise
- ilxor youtube channel
- some kind of social component I haven't calculated yet

basically, anything to make this place less of a waste of time for ppl, and more of an indispensable cultural nexus containing all the math, all the languages etc

I could see leaving ILX at least temporarily if I found myself in a new job which made it more difficult to toss out witty ripostes in the midst of 'doing work'. Or if I decided to devote time to being successful at something in life ever.

Srs suggestion: everyone forced to join I live footy

The world cup threads are the bright counterweight to what used to be a similarly periodic shitfest of US elections but somewhere along the way a particularly clunky comparison of trump to something something face like a melting wax ass lololol tore through the unknown materials and rules that combine to dictate the strange gravity and orbit of these event threads and now we all live in the awful US election thread universe
