nobody remembers anything that anyone writes on twitter. its the epitome of mumbling down a hallway.

(xposts) I imagine I'll bail one day--not out of malice, I hope--but I can't ever imagine preferring Twitter to ILX. Not a knock on Mark, but Twitter's ridiculous. The whole idea of it makes me think of "Hank's Thoughts" from Hank Kingsley's fanzine: "I could really go for a Creamsicle right now."

i can't be the only person who is still here because i've been here so long. who else would have me? i just use it now as a respite from facebook. i don't even consider ilx a part of the larger internet. it exists outside of time and space. and i've said it before so i'll say it again: most message boards/communities on the web are horror shows of dumb and sadness.

also totally makes sense to me that a lot of people i knew here who started writing more and more seriously and more professionally would stop typing so much somewhere for free. it takes mental energy out of you.

Sometimes because we’ve got a lot of thinking to do on our own.

You guys don’t have a “post your Letterboxd” thread around here these days? How far underground did you have to go?

i cant imagine leaving ilx simply because there's people who I like and love to read on ilx who wont add me on facebook/pretend they dont do facebook because they dont like me, so where else am I going to read what they say?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 26 February 2018 00:03 (six years ago) link

I’ve been spending more time on ILX because I’m not doing twitter anymore, ILX somehow healthier of a pastime.

direct to consumer online mattress brand (silby), Monday, 26 February 2018 00:23 (six years ago) link

Anyway the heat death of ILX will be no activity for 17 years and then deems bumping a thread with five posts from 2004 saying “did we ever get this sorted” and then another six years and then the final poll results will arrive

direct to consumer online mattress brand (silby), Monday, 26 February 2018 00:25 (six years ago) link

that will be a whiney poll then

I started reading in 2001, posting in 2003 and left b/c of major life upheaval in 2010. I posted very occasionally for the next six years b/c of work, relationship, and feeling like things had gotten a little nastier.

But last year I quit Facebook and simultaneously realized that I have very little time to socialize IRL. And I thought about it for a while and realized that the fake and Zucker-mediated unfulfilling socializing of Facebook had taken over for the (much more) fulfilling socializing I achieve in this board. So I’m back, but I genuinely don’t know whose username corresponds to whom any more, and I just kind of assume yer all my old friends.

I miss Slocki and Chaki and tabren and Beth Parker and Maria and Jon and Ian and Jaq and Vic and Nabisco and Crump and a lot of the alexes of various cities, Elvis Telecom, rogermexico, dean, gear, tep, many, many more... and I love the little snippets from the Minnesota crew, remaining noize dudes, tombot, and laurel, and jbr, ned, morbs, Mississippi shakedown, Jess, Soto, Seattle folx, brits, darragh, chil-xors, Whiney, antipodeans and sheepfuckers, laxors, Boston types...the the teacher crew. Probably forgot heaps of you too. I actually got a lot of love for y’all, and w/o Facebook I’m here for the long haul.

"most message boards/communities on the web are horror shows of dumb and sadness." is otm. Even in these grey senescent days there's just nowhere else where people aren't complete fucking idiots.

Yeah I don't even really believe it myself silby

Point being tho, right, that christ even saying it five years ago would have started a magnificent riot by now

The various exoduses (is that right) would make a good study maybe, what threads caused what tranche to leave

The learnings could be the next Hawthorne study

I would have assumed demands of family life or career would have stopped me from posting by now. I've been a lurker/low volume poster for probably about 12 years now, but with 3 kids + full time job without a huge amount of down time I'm sometimes surprised by how much I've become attached to this place (this is by far my most used web site).

This place has become my most reliable provider of music/movie/tv recommendations, which is pretty important when you actually don't have the time to watch a lot tv and movies (I can at least listen to a lot of music when working). So yeah, I'm probably going to keep doing my one post every 2 weeks thing for a while yet.

silverfish, Monday, 26 February 2018 02:52 (six years ago) link

i like instagram! i like pictures. i don't post anything because i don't have a phone. i like seeing my friends' pictures though and nothing but the pictures. it is really good pr for the store too. much better than facebook ever was and all i do is have rufus post pictures of records.

i can't stand twitter. never liked it. always avoid it.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2018 03:03 (six years ago) link

one post every 2 weeks

goals

El Tomboto, Monday, 26 February 2018 03:06 (six years ago) link

Oh, I know a lot of my list still post. I just have no idea who they are, and I like to read a lot of posts by unknown/different names and think, gee... I wonder if that’s X? And I don’t need to confirm it because if it’s not by X it makes me sad.

True fact tho: I hav yo post almost exclusively from my phone (typos probably make that obvious) because work owns my computer and blocks it from non-work sites... and incidentally there’s no cellular/WiFi signal at work. So posting is limited to vacations, evenings I’m not teaching, and cool-downs from the treadmill at the gym.

Love to Scots posters, to you I raise a crumb-soaked egg. And also the China ILXors, wherever you may be.

rb (soda), Monday, 26 February 2018 03:15 (six years ago) link

I voted other and I guess just the relative dearth of users compared to the old days and that fact that many good posters who used to post a lot no longer post is surely one of the biggest issues. I have thought about leaving for good but I come back due to, I dunno, sentimental reasons? I follow v few ilxors on social media so if I leave I'll never hear about posters here that I've *known* via this website for over a decade, would be weird. Like if imago gets hit by a bus tomorrow I'd like to be privy to that information

I'd post a lot less (ie prob never) if I only had phone access as I also find it a PITA to type.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 26 February 2018 04:57 (six years ago) link

i'd post a lot more but suspect that people get tired of my obscure aussie rules elections references rather quickly - and if you're fanging for that, check out my 17,844 tweets
