love comps like this, opening up whole new worlds. there's a cool 2LP comp of the Spanish scene that just came out that's similar:

where do US ilxors order Music From Memory vinyl? I bought the last few on Discogs, but shipping rates are getting ridiculous

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 15:19 (six years ago) link

That does look awesome. Walhalla records from Belgium released two great (well, I only have vol. 2) compilations of Belgian new wave/synth acts from cassette releases.

On topic, apart from the already mentioned Outro-Tempo and Gaussian Curve records I have/love the Denis Mpunga & Paul K. (Congolese/Belgian percussion/synth collab) and Dub Oven (Californian synth/funk/punk) EP's. Basically I check every MfM release my local record shop gets in...

willem, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 15:19 (six years ago) link

the suso saiz records have been some of my favourite things as well

I'm mildly obsessed with this as well. Also can't get enough of Roberto Musci

Terekke's Improvisional Loops is out on Spotify this morning, interesting release for MFM: https://open.spotify.com/album/7sYiiE8J3sHHCALicu6MUU?si=hn3sSfcgS9K8XbD5c5MRLQ

Somehow perfect for a snowed in London this morning.

Been watching this label since I discovered it a few months ago.

I recommend the Geoffrey Landers compilation they put out. "Say You'll Say So" got me hooked.

I had been aware of it more or less from the beginning cuz I was living in Amsterdam and had some friends would DJ for Redlight Radio and buy stuff from Redlight Records, but really only paid full attention after this profile on Tako in RA - https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/2530 Gives a decent impression of the 00s crate-digger spirit in Europe, especially after Discogs. It's actually a bit crazy how many of those records have now been re-released even since the feature!

In general, MFM strike me as best case defense of retromania.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 10:49 (six years ago) link

anyone been keeping up with the second circle releases? only one i have is the dazion EP but that's definitely a keeper

Forced Exposure mailorder has v reasonable shipping and pretty much the whole catalog in stock.

some kind soul has made a Spotify playlist of all this stuff, looking forward to diving in

There's a good trick with Spotify, you can actually search by label.

If you enter - label:"music from memory" - into the search bar, you should get all the results. Not sure why they don't improve functionality like this tbh.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 16:14 (six years ago) link

^^^ such a wonderful thing

brimstead, Thursday, 1 March 2018 16:22 (six years ago) link

that Dazion EP is wonderful!

boxedjoy, Thursday, 1 March 2018 17:36 (six years ago) link

Gonna just drop a reference to this reissue comp here, fits into the Redlight Radio DJ set zone of Tako, Jamie Tiller or guys like Hunee over the past few years - not sure if it's the right thread for it, but anyway...

Gumba Fire: Bubblegum Soul & Synth Boogie In 1980s South Africa - seriously great, sorta MFM parallel.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 11 March 2018 08:40 (six years ago) link

yeah i bought gumba fire yesterday, great stuff indeed

boxedjoy, alerted me to this, which is really good.

It's on Belgian label STROOM rather than MfM but it covers a lot of the same demographic.

I call this stuff "Discogs wormhole material"

boxedjoy, Monday, 12 March 2018 08:14 (six years ago) link

That's a great wormhole.

MikoMcha, Monday, 12 March 2018 19:14 (six years ago) link

could use a rolling wormhole thread tbqhwy

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Monday, 12 March 2018 19:54 (six years ago) link

There is a definite axis, isn't there? Stuff that maybe five years ago would have simply been "balearic" but now its too dark and un-pop to align easily. Music from Africa and South America and Asia that's technically reissues but feels new to the world, and stuff that feels like reissues but is actually contemporary. The kind of thing you feel constantly behind the curve on. Growing Bin, Listen To This, WRWTFWW, whoever. Its a broad realm but it feels niche in its remit, "rolling wormhole" might be the best description?

boxedjoy, Monday, 12 March 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link

its kind of post mutant sounds blog balearic?

chee shimizu
ondas
ziggy/stroom
basso/growing bin
maybe the antinote crew
redlight radio gang
visible cloaks/root strata
dream chimney
melody as truth
record culture magazine
etc

Not MfM but also in the same demographic - this reissued album of baroque Danish synthpop by Suzanne Menzel I've been enjoying this week. Some of it is a little eyebrow-raising but fans of weird 80s pop and Julia Holter should investigate

boxedjoy, Thursday, 15 March 2018 12:39 (six years ago) link

This Uneven Paths compilation is genuinely surprising. Maybe one of the most beautiful compilations of unknown-to-me music I've ever heard.

omg the Terekke album is so beautiful. very ambient, mostly just soft muted drifty synth pads but it's really excellent.

brimstead, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 01:57 (six years ago) link

Uneven Paths is ace, first thing I've bought on this label. Reminds me of the Antinote five year anniversary compilation from last year

paolo, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:55 (six years ago) link

Uneven Paths, yup terrific. I feel like I'm still absorbing it, but plays like one of the best DJ mixes from Redlight.

Hunee's Hunchin' All Night is also out, and (perhaps?) also deserves a mention on this thread: https://rushhourmusic.bandcamp.com/album/hunee-hunchin-all-night - also great!

Outro Tempo 1984-1996 announced!

music_from_memory
Super thrilled to announce that this Spring we will release the second volume of Outro Tempo! Following on from where the first volume left off, “Outro Tempo II: Electronic and Contemporary Music from Brazil, 1984-1996” takes another dive into the depths of the Brazilian underworld, exploring the rhythms that lurk beneath the Ipanema sunset. A year in the making and again compiled by @johngomezldn it will feature original artwork by @alicequaresma on a beautiful double LP format.

But we’re not done there… to quench your Outro Tempo thirst we are releasing an exclusive teaser EP with the never before heard cassette madness of São Paulo’s Bruhahá Babélico and Individual Industry’s ethereal electro pop on the flip! Check ‘Bruhahá II’ (1987) and be sure to head over to our YouTube for the full track!

Further to the above, I preferred the Uneven Paths comp too but pretty much everything that label puts out is quality.

The excellent Yu Su has an EP of ambient/Balearic tracks coming out soon on MFM sublabel Second Circle. Clips here - https://www.residentadvisor.net/reviews/23734

Also RA have made Stroom their label of the month, which I think would be of interest to readers of this thread - https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/3449

So shocked by this. Huge influence musically on me for the last however many years and I'm sure there's a lot of people out there who feel the same. And MfM has changed the lives of some of the artists they've put out, they really were doing god's work. His DJ sets were wonderful too. Terrible loss
