not that it matters but Rosie from Pram, iirc

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 20 February 2018 21:07 (six years ago) link

I imagine she wouldn't agree.

Video reach stereo bog (Tom D.), Tuesday, 20 February 2018 21:25 (six years ago) link

With it mattering, you mean? I meant it doesn't matter to me. It's not like she's Count Grishnackh

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 20 February 2018 21:31 (six years ago) link

margo price is very anti trump and outspoken about it

i'm not sure if that makes her a leftist though

F# A# (∞), Tuesday, 20 February 2018 21:36 (six years ago) link

so is the Pram person right wing or not dudez?

It's not delivery, it's Adorno! (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 20 February 2018 21:43 (six years ago) link

well she is from North Yorkshire and probably has classic gammon dna.

No, I meant I doubt she considers herself right wing. If she is, then herself from Stereolab must be too.

Graham Parker; his anti abortion song is called “you can’t be too strong” -_-

When The National Review published their list of the 50 greatest conservative rock songs, this song was at #30. It's also the song Parker singled out when we asked him in 2012 which of his songs were the most commonly misinterpreted. Said Parker, "They decided it was an anti-abortion song. And of course it's a much more questioning song than that. It's a deeply emotional song that is not making any rules for anyone at all. But people do see it that way. I wrote some blogs on my Web site a few years back. One was deeply anti-religion, and the other one was a message to President Obama, which basically I was telling him to tell the Republicans to go f--k yourself. Because that's what they did to Democrats for eight years under Bush. Get with the program, Obama. Don't be wimp. He still hasn't taken my advice yet. But probably a good thing.

Anyway, somebody had a CD table at a gig came up to me and said, 'So you're finished with that conservative kind of thing, are you?' Because they suddenly found out I'm a raving liberal. I'm anti-religion and I'm anti-republican. And I looked at him and said, "Well, yeah, for whatever." I just didn't know what to say really."

OMG Richard Jobson!

he's pro-Corbyn and anti-Trump from what i can see in interviews. are we talking a couple of dubious sleeves and album titles with the skids or has he said some other terrible shit?

Maconie Youth (NickB), Wednesday, 21 February 2018 06:33 (six years ago) link

No, what I was surprised about was that he's the presenter in the Vincent Gallo vid posted above, which you sensibly didn't watch because Vincent Gallo.

But tbf if I'm not allowed point that out in the rolling rip threads....

Planck Blather (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 February 2018 12:27 (six years ago) link

"Hates Trump" isn't a good litmus test for checking if a UK musician isn't conservative, most tories do.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 13:05 (six years ago) link

The current nightmare Austrian nightmare government still get a lot of mileage out of mocking ze schtoopit Amerikans for electing Trump. Anti-Trump means nothing.

While the Tories are gutting the NHS + all local authority services, killing disableds and maintaining the worst working poverty since the 30's, Trump is handy for some of these big-game hunters to get some hero points on twitter.

calzino, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 13:14 (six years ago) link

No-one mentioned anything about noteworthiness

But tbf if I'm not allowed point that out in the rolling rip threads....

Maybe cos it's a nasty and unnecessary thing to do? Just a thought.

think they're all kind of apolitical except one guy who's a pretty clear tory. but 'grave new world' is such a good album it doesn't matter

imago, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 13:59 (six years ago) link

also wakeman is an active freemason

Maconie Youth (NickB), Wednesday, 21 February 2018 14:17 (six years ago) link

well they did do that ridiculing the trade unions anthem, lol it was amongst my mums collection of cheap ex-jukebox 45's in the 70's.

Seriously, if they leaned right in the 70s, they definitely haven't in a long time, not by US standards for sure: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2012/6/22/1102317/-Rush-the-Band-on-Rush-Politics-and-Michael-Moore .

with the exception of the main guy and wakeman i got the impression the strawbs werent right wing at all and just as happy to play actual union fundraisers as well as tory party conference

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Wednesday, 21 February 2018 14:18 (six years ago) link

actually it was not the main guy (dave cousins) but bassist john ford who wrote and sang "part of the union." he's had an interesting career, cashing in on psych (elmer gantry's velvet opera), prog (strawbs), even punk (the monks -- not those monks -- who had a regrettable semi-hit called "nice legs, shame about the face.") john ford lives in the US now and sometimes performs at a library near me. he is charming.

Are they the band that (PiL-era) John Lydon ripped to shreds on Jukebox Jury and it turned out they were surprise guests?

Video reach stereo bog (Tom D.), Wednesday, 21 February 2018 14:50 (six years ago) link

maybe? they did have a song called 'johnny b. rotten'

The Monks were an English punk band formed in the late 1970s. They were very successful in Canada, where their debut album reached double platinum.

"you can't be too strong" is a lot more complex than "anti abortion" and an amazing song

Xpost totally open to being convinced upper missipissippi! I read it as a sort of paternalistic and sentimental way of implying that people who have (and perform) abortions are somehow weak but i am curious about yr gloss

pre millennial tension (uptown churl), Wednesday, 21 February 2018 20:26 (six years ago) link

No mention of Moe Tucker?

Moodles, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 20:42 (six years ago) link

i should say that i don't necessarily agree w/all the songs sentiments but to me it's pretty clearly a tragedy (to parker) in three parts: the woman, the man (probably the true villain if there is one "go see the boys/They'll laugh when I say, I left it overseas") and the doctor....but it ends with "you decide what's wrong" i don't think he's necessarily trying to put forth an agenda or assign "blame" rather than write a song that's affecting (and pretty brutal)....

I read it as a sort of paternalistic and sentimental way of implying that people who have (and perform) abortions are somehow weak

it's one of those songs i wouldn't necessarily say your interpretation is wrong either!

i guess i read it as ambivalent, though i guess you have to view the entire thing viewing abortion as tragic to some degree, but i don't necessarily see it as advocating a "pro life" political agenda either, to say that i think the song def is interesting and problematic in equal measure but it's a big stretch to put graham parker down in a thread that says he's "right wing" as a result.
