Yet Webern inspired a whole generation of composers who embraced his brand of serialism as a means to ensure that art music could no longer be coopted by genocidal ideologies.

... and were later accused of elitism and authoritarianism.

That's Keith Urban. Brooks is married to fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood who performed at Bill Clinton's first inauguration. The two of them also performed at Al Gore's Live Earth event in 2007.

OMG Richard Jobson!

Video reach stereo bog (Tom D.), Tuesday, 20 February 2018 18:02 (six years ago) link

yeah you know it's going to be a totally cordial and normal panel when one of the first things he says is "i sense a little bit of your own personal hangups as a woman that made you incapable of transcending them and enjoying the love story, which is quite evolved and quite modern."

for what it's worth, gary numan:

I genuinely thought that the best option was voting for the Conservatives at the time. But I do regret talking about that because people got really fucking weird about it. At the last election, there was a Scottish newspaper that ran a big feature that had me down as Conservative, which was an absolute bloody lie. I only voted for them that one time and I was so demoralised by what happened and the negative reaction I got for saying I voted Conservative that I get involved very little in that sort of thing now.

(he also hates trump, but he's not american)

Have we talked about Pat DiNizio?

He was a Reform Party candidate but I gather his stance was libertarian/right-ish.

persona non gratin (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 20 February 2018 19:59 (six years ago) link

I think most Country artists who lean left are pretty quiet, cagey about it, whereas right wingers like Ronnie Dunn (Brooks & Dunn) are pretty loud.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 20 February 2018 20:12 (six years ago) link

i think a lot of these newer country artists skew pretty left and woke, but they don't come out and say it yeah.

Jason Isbell has clearly stated that he's left.

margo price is very anti trump and outspoken about it

No, I meant I doubt she considers herself right wing. If she is, then herself from Stereolab must be too.

Graham Parker; his anti abortion song is called “you can’t be too strong” -_-

When The National Review published their list of the 50 greatest conservative rock songs, this song was at #30. It's also the song Parker singled out when we asked him in 2012 which of his songs were the most commonly misinterpreted. Said Parker, "They decided it was an anti-abortion song. And of course it's a much more questioning song than that. It's a deeply emotional song that is not making any rules for anyone at all. But people do see it that way. I wrote some blogs on my Web site a few years back. One was deeply anti-religion, and the other one was a message to President Obama, which basically I was telling him to tell the Republicans to go f--k yourself. Because that's what they did to Democrats for eight years under Bush. Get with the program, Obama. Don't be wimp. He still hasn't taken my advice yet. But probably a good thing.

Anyway, somebody had a CD table at a gig came up to me and said, 'So you're finished with that conservative kind of thing, are you?' Because they suddenly found out I'm a raving liberal. I'm anti-religion and I'm anti-republican. And I looked at him and said, "Well, yeah, for whatever." I just didn't know what to say really."

OMG Richard Jobson!

he's pro-Corbyn and anti-Trump from what i can see in interviews. are we talking a couple of dubious sleeves and album titles with the skids or has he said some other terrible shit?

Maconie Youth (NickB), Wednesday, 21 February 2018 06:33 (six years ago) link

No, what I was surprised about was that he's the presenter in the Vincent Gallo vid posted above, which you sensibly didn't watch because Vincent Gallo.

"Hates Trump" isn't a good litmus test for checking if a UK musician isn't conservative, most tories do.

The current nightmare Austrian nightmare government still get a lot of mileage out of mocking ze schtoopit Amerikans for electing Trump. Anti-Trump means nothing.

While the Tories are gutting the NHS + all local authority services, killing disableds and maintaining the worst working poverty since the 30's, Trump is handy for some of these big-game hunters to get some hero points on twitter.

calzino, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 13:14 (six years ago) link

No-one mentioned anything about noteworthiness

But tbf if I'm not allowed point that out in the rolling rip threads....

Maybe cos it's a nasty and unnecessary thing to do? Just a thought.
